ofp mech talk, gundam fans welcome

Recommended Posts

i was kinda hoping that ofp would be the first gundam pc game. well i was wrong. time is not up yet though. Any gundam fans out there care to comment? the closest we have come to working mecha is gigans wanzer walker. its an actual walking spider crab mech. the legs move and all. not smoothly, because of the way that the models are built in ofp. You can't adjust animation time in accordance with things like speed so the legs move at the same speed no matter how fast you go. kinda like a power rangers cartoon if you think about it. anyhow the battle over hokkaido mod has some good mechs in it too. i recommend that one. sometimes i think about the lazer rifles and mecha and want to do a futuristic war but then im like, "who's going to play it with me anyhow. i can't pilot the mech and be a soldier at the same time." besides i could put up a room in gamespy but lately the resistance room in gamespy is pretty empty. there is almost no place to get this thing going on, this dream of mine, almost.

No worries Bowery, OFP is not only meant for multiplay but it can be used for single play too cos the AI is pretty intelligent. Its a matter of creating good believeable storylines and test ur skills as a hunter ( if u are not in military yet ). Both multi and single play has its advantages and disadvantages, but with ofp and the amount of addons being created for it...u would have endless amount of dynamic gameplay shifting thru the periods of warfare in time by yourself. ( perhaps we need some good AI female companion to keep us going? tounge_o.gif )

As for mechs, its the only eventual mechanical evolution of warfare as mankind seeks not only genetic mutation to make themselves better warriors but more smaller 'tanks' or 'exoskel' or more 'all terrain type' mech monster equipped with gadgetry for better personal protection, armour and firepower. Already an exoskel ( something like what u see in matrix revolution) is already developed and currently in tests for the US army, read it off a mainstream science mag. Probably would be in production in 10yrs time..but why wait till then to give it spin when u can do it now in ofp? tounge_o.gif Have fun!

A much better explanation is: Japan's Star Trek.

I think that to make a good mecha, you'd have to make it as a "Soldier" instead of a vehicle and just live without the whole vehicleness(Making up new words).

I think it'd be really really cool if the soldier had a green hue for his view. Then you are like as tall as those apartment buildings. I think that'd be possible. For more of an effect just turn blood off. Then have it go up against wanzer. lol. that'd be one tight ass match. a big soldier vs. wanzer...OOH OR EVEN OTHER BIG SOLDIERS FOR THE OTHER SIDE! ZAKU WARRIORS!! Oh man this sounds very good.

Here is a picture of an infantry gundam from the tv show Gundam: 08th mobile suit team:

and here is a picture of its enemy the Zaku:

GUNDAM SEED RULZ!!! (yeah I know, lotsa people say it's a mix of other gundams made before, but I didn't see those yet, I was infected with anime craze having been fed the whole Gundam Seed series tounge_o.gif ). Well, besides the Wanzer, someone recently made some Macross things and somewhere I've already seen Heavy Gear 1 units from the PC game, although they aren't anime, still very cool to use around!

But like the Wanzer and the Macross units I think that maybe OFP would not be the best game to do a Gundam mod, probably better to wait for OFP2...

Like Gundam wing smile_o.gif, it is not so uber sci-fi and that's what I like, you also have some normal tanks, choppers and planes.

It's a long time ago since I saw that show sad_o.gif

If you make something like that you have to do only the Gundam Wing show, not the others since I don't like them that much wink_o.gif

Huh? rock.gif

Never heard of gundam.

IMO nothing beats good ol' Transformers with Optimus Prime and Megatron as the leaders, not the Japanese crap that came afterwards.

if you were a hardcore gundam fans you wont say that biggrin_o.gif

anyways, personaly i think "Patlabor" is so far the best sic-fi mech anime which close to real world, if i am goin to make an mech addon, it would be the first.

Gundam Wing was too melodramatic for my liking. I want to see giant robots kicking the tar out of stuff/each other, not thirty minutes of bad anime melodrama punctuated by a couple of shots of a load of blips moving nearer each other on a starry backdrop.

If someone could point me towards some more action-packed stompy robot anime, I might put my copy of Lone Wolf and Cub vol. 3 down for a bit. Hang on, I think I have some of my old Transformers videos in the attic from when I was little. Yay! biggrin_o.gif

well for we old hardcore anime fans gundam seed is an "morden" version of Wing, both of them are just, well lets say "silly"(not offending anyone here), which dont even fit into OFP theme, take a look on 08th MS Sq. ("08th mobile suit team" if you like), it is the only one i will borther to make it into OFP

Wouldn't labors (A la Patlabor) be a more realistic choice for a military simulation? The MS from Gundam (Bar 8th team) had more of a flashy, unrealistic feel.

Also, I seem to recall that OPSciFi had some kind of working AT-ST in production... what happened?

Erm, Shadow... the first Gundam came out in 1979... Transformers only showed up in 1984... tounge_o.gif

i think the same way too(as i have said few posts b4)

but as patlabor is less popular in EU and US then gundam, thats makes 08 MS be the first choose so far

BTW US anime is too hot blooded, most(i only say MOST) of them like Transformers gives me the feeling of "kill kill murder that f***r, YEAH~"............ (dont believe me? take a look on G.I.Joe)

Robotech (or Macross if you like) is fine as long as you make the "bone crashing hi G dog fighting" and "fighter-Gerwalk-Battroid" transform possible in OFP........

if you guys need pics or specs of a labor ill be glad to . I'm down for a labor soldier. just remember to make him as a soldier model and enlarge the soldier. no getting out and you have a realistic simulation. maybe also change the sound of his footsteps. labors are also not as tall as gundams and with ofps height limitations for the soldier class you may be able to pull off a labor more easily. the story:

[Patlabor01] In the late 20th century, highly advanced robots, known as Labors, where created for construction purposes. However labors soon became used in other areas other than construction. Other labors were developed to be used in the military, for under sea exploration and even recreational purposes. However with the growing amount of labors there has been an increase in what is called Labor crime - crime involving the use of labors. These involve a range of crimes, from terrorist action to drunken or disgruntled industrial workers running amuck. To combat this new type of crime, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department have created the Special Vehicles Section 2 or SV2. The division has the use of Patrol Labors, or PATLABORS, which are labors specially designed for police purposes. There are two units in the SV2, Unit One is commanded by Shinobu Nugumo, and the 2nd Unit is commanded by Captain Kiichi Goto. The series mainly focuses on the adventures of the officers in the Special Vehicles Section 2, Second Unit.

The members of the Second Unit have a reputation of being reckless and disobedient, as in they don't go "by the book" most of the time. The SV2 Second Unit is referred to, by the public, as an embarrassment to the police force, a waste of public funds, and a dumping ground for "missfits". However their reputation are only speculation since most people don't see that they do get the job done, no matter how they go about it. The true description of the Members of the Special Vehicles Section 2, Second Unit are that they are courageous and loyal to their duty.

I looked at those sites on Gundam. I remember. I saw a few episodes of those back in the 80's. Still rubbish compared to TransFormers IMO.

And I'm talking Generation 1 season 1 to 4. Not the stuff Japan made afterwards (they killed Optimus, but the American-written episodes in-between revived him because the whole world loved him so much). Yay biggrin_o.gif
