Rhodite 3 Posted March 12, 2004 Upgrade time has finnaly come around for me weeeeeeeeeeeeee I am looking at the top systems and the P4 and the A64 are the daddies of the cpu market for home users. I have never been an intel fan (bastahs ripped us off for years till amd managed to compete) So the Opteron I hear its fast etc etc But is it in practice a good gaming CPU? *steps back from the floor*
Placebo 12 Posted March 12, 2004 I just upgraded recently as my 1.2ghz amd wasn't getting the most out of my Radeon 9800, I could have afforded a 64bit cpu but felt it wasn't really worth it right now with the fact it's not supported by much at all, so I went with an AMD 2800XP as it figured it gave a good bang-for-buck, then in a year or so when 64bit is more common and has become cheaper I may look at upgrading, depends on current requirements
turms 0 Posted March 12, 2004 Just to make it sure, you are talking about programs, right? EDIT: damn quotes
Gadger 0 Posted March 12, 2004 I'd recommend either getting the Athlon XP 3200 + 400FSB for Å145 or the P4 2.6ghz for Å130. In 7-8 months time you will be able to upgrade again to the 3.2 or greater HT or 64bit cpu's for roughly the same price. Also are you buying a total new system? Or just upgrading current one? Bear in mind that if your upgrading just your CPU you will probably need to get a new mobo too.

Those are server CPU's, like the Xeon, and money wise they are complete nonsense. If you want performance, get a 754pin A64-3400 now, or wait a few months until the 939pin FX-53 comes out. Those 2 CPU's are the daddy at the moment. If you want bang-for-the-buck performance, get a 754pin A64-3200
Rhodite 3 Posted March 12, 2004 I am buying a complete system. Personally I am indifferent as to wat I buy .. I just want as Placebo said as much bang for my buck I have been eyeing the Alienware systems
toadlife 3 Posted March 12, 2004 A warning about Alienware. We just bought 5 alienware Area51 laptops here at work for us techs. They are fast as hell, but so far we have had to send back THREE of them, all for seperate issues. To top it off, their service sucks - it's been three weeks since we sent the laptops back - we called them and they couldn't tell us where our laptops were or when they would be sent back. Their desktop systems may be better, but like I said - beware.
hellfish6 7 Posted March 12, 2004 Alienware is uber expensive too. I've been looking at the desktops from TigerDirect.com. An A64 system with a Radeon 9200 and a gig of RAM is about $1000.
drewb99 0 Posted March 12, 2004 I'd go with an A64 3200+ (not that I'm biased or anything ) and just do some simple overclocking to get it up to 3400+ speed. The A64 3x00s also run circles around the Opterons and FX-51 in terms of desktop performance as well, you'd save a bundle getting one of those.
