That's right, I speak of....

"The Day After"!

I remember when this movie first aired. My parents wouldn't let me watch it sad_o.gif so I had to wait till it actually got on video for me to watch.

Here is an interesting article about it:

Fallout From "The Day After"

Particularly interesting is the effect the movie had on the Reagan Administration. They seem a little more level headed than a certain "Jr." right now.

If you want something even more gruesome I suggest you check out threads.

Obviously these people did not duck and cover like the cartoons told them too.

I remember when this movie and threads came out. It would be good if they were to show these movies again, I think the issue is still relavent even today.

We actually watched "Threads" in my elementary class, I think it was a "World Issues" class. It was in a military base school and at RAF Alconbury so we all felt particularly "threatened" by it.

If I remember correctly, there was on part where a daughter has a mis-carriage or gives birth to a deformed baby because of radiation. We were all traumatized by that scene.

I believe there were several suicides in the US when it was released there.

This must be the movie my mom has told me about. I've wanted to see it, but don't remember it's finnish name.

AFAIK it was not released here.

It has been released on DVD though:

I remember this movie. I was 5 and it scared the crap outta me. No five year old should have to know that people's shadows get burned onto walls during nuclear explosions.

My parents made me sit through this and all the Jaws movies when I was really young. Imagine the horror of a 7 year old at Sea World, where they have one of those glass tubes surrounded by sharks when you've just seen Jaws 3. crazy_o.gif

I would have no idea what this movie was, it was released before my parents even though about having my older sister......But I have had my tramatizing movie moments. From the movie Terminatior, which is the reason I am afraid of new technology and robots to the horrifying 60's era sex ed film we were forced to watch in the 4th grade. crazy_o.gifcrazy_o.gifcrazy_o.gifcrazy_o.gifcrazy_o.gifcrazy_o.gifcrazy_o.gifcrazy_o.gifcrazy_o.gif

I remember seeing this movie when it came out on video over here - it was really shocking. And it made me angry (enough so that I still get flashes of hot anger when morons like Bush start talking about 'mini nukes' again...). I was maybe fourteen when I saw it, and I can say it left an enduring impression.

Then maybe this might stop the pain...

Take 2 please... crazy_o.gif  sad_o.gif

Edit: Exactly where did the nuke come from? Or is this a STALKER-like incident? rock.gif

I remember seeing this movie awhile back on TV. Very interesting, if I remember correctly, at the the end of the movie is a disclaimer that says the movie was based on what would have happened in realitivly low yield bombs were used, it said dammage would have been much more massive than depicted. I though it was already bad enough with people's skin falling off from radiation sickness... crazy_o.gif

A good book to read is called Arc Light by Eric L. Harry. It starts out with China and Russia at war, followed very rapidly by a Russian coup, a Korean War, and a Russian attempt to counter-force strike the Chinese nuclear bases. The American president was warned by the Russians of the strike, but told the Chinese about it, giving the Chinese time to launch their nukes first. Russia sees the Chinese nukes launch and they think it's the Americans... you can imagine where it goes from there. The first half of the book is pretty much the nuclear exchange and initial US-Russian confrontations (frigates ramming destroyers, an F-15E strike on a naval base, Russian invasion of Iceland and 82nd Airborne/75th Rangers counterattack) and the second half of the book is the US invasion of Russia.

I'm not kidding when I say that it is by far the most intense, emotional and brilliantly written fictional war story I have ever read. It will blow you mind away - especially the two Air Force officers trapped underground in their missile command center.

I STRONGLY urge all of you to find this book at Amazon.com or Abebooks.com and buy it. You'll love it. Unfortunately, the publisher and the author had a falling out so the book isn't in print anymore, but there are used copies out there available for cheap.
