Lock on: modern air combat

For those who don't know, MSFS2004 was set to be released on July 29th! biggrin_o.gif  I haven't seen it in any stores yet, but I'll be out there looking ASAP. unclesam.gif

I wont buy another microsoft simulator after the fiasco that was CFS3

I just got done with a first flight in MSFS2004

First impression: I'm paying an extra $5-10 for this beautiful metal box. Don't get me wrong it's great, but cheap cardboard would save me money. smile_o.gif Weather: great. Classic planes: FUN. Framerates:... may have to do some tweaking.

So what i wanna know is, when the hell are us rotorheads going to get an equivalent to Lomac? I've been flying my old copy of Longbow 2, and I need to get this flight model into a graphics engine with trees, and towns, and... something other than pixels! I'd pay a large amount of money for that kind of game.

OFP's the closest I've got right now, but the flight model ain't cuttin' it. I need my UH-60 to respond like the one in LB2.

MSFS does helicopters pretty well. biggrin_o.gif

... just no guns  unclesam.gif

I can live with not having any guns on my helo... but having someone shooting at you and having your buddies shooting back is a must.

I heard a rumor a while back, about the time CFS3 came out, that CFS4, might be modern helicopters.  But that was a while ago, and I don't think there was much if any evidence behind it.  I'll see if I can find it on the SimHQ forums.

I just got done with two quick commuter flights in 2004, I'm sort of disappointed.  I got low FPS, which isn't that big a deal, it was low clouds (and developing T-storms biggrin_o.gif) and at night with all the graphics way up, so I can't expect much.  But the ATC was horrible.  You're always having your airspace violated, but I've never seen it cause an accident.  My first try into Washington Intl. ended up in a go-around. They had me on 5 mile final at 5000 feet and 220 knots. It was sort of buggy too.  I got a traffic call, then a handoff.  So I answered the traffic call, but couldn't go through the dialog for the handoff.  So I had to go back and look up the correct frequency, dial it in, then try to contact the ATC with no luck.  So I had to close my IFR flight plan (which was illegal under the conditions crazy_o.gif), contact the correct ATC, refile an IFR flightplan and go in for a visual approach to 19 at Washington Intl. Ended up half way into another state before I got turned around again.

What happened?

The flight models were totally unbelievable, the game was full of bugs, the ground graphics were horrible, the enemy AI was horrible, you needed a top noch machine to get decent preformance and the whole game felt far too lifeless. When I got forgotten battles a month later I felt cheated... sad_o.gifmad_o.gif

Those are the best explosions I've ever seen come out of a video game, but the worst smoke effects.

Well, not WORST, but it's pitiful compared to it's own explosions.

Anyway, I wont complain too much, that did look really cool. biggrin_o.gif

The explosion smoke could look better, I think it looks better in Forgotten Battles, however the missile trail smoke looks amazing (just look at that missile launch by the Hind at the beginning)

The explosions and some of the smoke were OK really. But look at the beginning of the movie where the hind is going along and there are a few big explosions in front of it. The fire and smoke goes up (which looks fantastic), but then just shrivels away.

Imagine how much resources all that smoke would take up if the smoke from each explosions hung around for about 15 seconds.

But I agree that explosion smoke should hang around for longer instead of just kind of dissapearing.

Damn. I need to get a new computer for this game, I guess. The Grad battery looked very nice when it fired ... I wonder how it will look when you observe it from a higher altitude.

I think it's an amazing video, but the explosions reminded me of the M1A1 Tank Platoon 2 and Gunship! explosions rock.gif
