"live" mission design

Recommended Posts

When designing missions, it would be nice to be able to walk around in full 3D, just like when playing them, when placing units and other stuff.

It would make exact placement much easier, it would give a much better feel for the landscape, for distances, field of fire, effects of heights and so on. Everyone who has tried to position a M2 in a second floor window in a house knows what I mean. Sometimes I place a lot of units which I think is hidden by bushes, then found that a slight slope makes puts them in full view.

The way I would like it is to be able to walk around, using menus to put stuff in front of me, grabbing (and dropping) stuff to move it around. If I had the option to change parameters on the objects in this view, it would also be nice. A superfast run would also be nice to move around faster.

While we are discussing mission design, I would like to have a spectator mode, where I could go into undestructible seagull mode and just observe how the waypoints, triggers, timing and AI works. It would be nice to have when balancing and testing the missions.

A 3d mission editor would be kick ass. But if it's too much, it's good as is now. Although being able to walk around and mark positions to show up in the editor would be neat.

I'd be already happy if the objects in the editor would have the same size as in game! tounge_o.gif

I am sure it could be made already using a similar design to the CTI and RTS missions. All you need is a script which writes it into a text file which could be initialised in an "empty" mission pbo once you have quit the mission and loaded up the ME again.

In saying this though, an official one would be really great.

How about use the Visitor approach in OFP2 mission editor.

You place them manually as in OFP now, but when you go to preview your get that overhead view, where you can modify objects positions etc etc etc

But maybe not make it called preview, bc you would still need the preview feature to actually play as your soldiers :P

I was positive ofp2 would be Vietnam, and I am also a litle bit sure that the new editor will be 3 Dimensional.

No more placing objects with a ? inside of a yellow box.

However I would also think the detail on the 3D editor will be very low, like WRPedit objects.

Just to clarify:

I was talking about mission editing, not 3D modelling or island building.

I doubt the detail would need to be lower. It would work much like RTS3, except that you place "dead" objects, with no need for AI. You walk around, chose to place an object, select the object and it appears in front of you. No magic there.

Wise words indeed! smile_o.gif

I mean, it's hell trying to place fences at the right place. About 90% of all the objects have the same size box.

If you were told that one object was intersecting another, then that would be good (like a red area on top of the intersecting parts of the object in 'map mode', if you understand my meaning).
