Project: uss nimitz 68 carrier

- Once again: no release of anything, just my temp. addon. i want to share with those who are interrested. Since currently this is still a one man project (getting some help of people), any advice and remarks are still welcome. Anyway, updated addon is more user-friendly then the last (group placement fixed).  tounge_o.gif  So no need for a testmission. (note that the first lift is already been animated..but don't work. Once again because of OFP "limites", but will bee hopefull fixed somewhere this week. Also deflectors (1 and 2 only) are animated (swith is were the "glas dome" is located) as a seperate unit (will be merged into part 3). And many more...

Any news??? Please??? It seems it's going to be the best looking A/C relased for OFP. (In fact one of 2, but great model anyway).

I've recently been thinking about two ideas:

-you could add ability to setObjectTexture to faces with ships numbers (i mean big 68 on the deck). This way we could simulate other Nimitz-class carriers, like:

Dwight D. Eisenhower  CVN-69

Carl Vinson  CVN 70  

and 5 others... Would be realy cool.

-My method for launching planes:

1. create memory points where the catapults are and add UserAction, kind of "Lock Down Plane to catapult"

this would set plane heading exactly along catapult.

2. Then next UserAction, "Initiate launch procedure" - this would raise deflector, hold down the plane setposing it constantly in the same place for a few seconds while you could heat up engines a bit,

3. and then... launch, using setvelocity command.

Hope I made it clear enough.

sad_o.gif  No big progress...but i think i will spent a lot of time on it during the Christmas holiday. Since my model (some parts) are still to big (especialy in width =73m), i still need to resplit most of the Nimitz. Not that that is a "BIG" deal, but it will take some serieus thinking and time. Most of the model (no Geo so far) is done, it just need to be resplit and configured. (i think final will have +-12 parts..this includes the lift and defletors as seperate model).

About the "setObjectTexture" (expl. 68, 69..ext). Good idea, but don't think it is worth it. Although (i guess) the basic (hull) is the same for all Nimitz carriers, the command tower is not the same. (but everything is still possible, maybee a combination of the setTexture AND an other command tower model?).

About the planes position and launch procedure: don't think i will make a "in-addon" setup. I tested it recently with Havoc launch script (mission edit) and was happy about the result so far (using this methode). Since Havoc wanted to make a "demo" mission (on final release  sad_o.gif ), maybee it could be refined to a Nimitz launch procedure. (didn't test it but i guess the deflectors also work with a trigger).

Because when you put them in one group (like part 1 and the Deflectors) the action menu will not work(in most cases)so separte them smile_o.gif

had to post to let ya know (Im sure ya already do but had to say it, none the less) that your Nimitz addon, even unfinished, with the possible exception of the CTI maps, is the single most impressive piece of work I've seen by a player for this game ever. In short - holy sh!t. Cant wait till it's done. If BIS doesn't try to hire ya, theyre nuts.

Yeah I saw those too, but if you actually download the trailers you'll find it is actually a different Nimitz by Hawk. Couldn't get them to play on my Media Player for some reason (missing codec) so I could only look at the pics, but it looks quite nice.

So, the only reason that I re-hash this topic, even with talk of other aircraft carriers, is because this one is the only on that we've actually seen so far, and it still delivers more than the other ones (well, except for a complete model wink_o.gif ).

So, I'm looking for more news. Don't tell me that you abandoned it in light of the other new aircraft carriers. Are you still working on it?

I have indeed decided to stop the project (as said: model had to bee resplit from +-6 to 12. Because of the 73m width of the carrier.) Not that big of problem, but a bit to big for me. Anyway, (in case you didn't knew) Hawk's Nimitz is based on mine, but he reworked it. Hopefull he resplits the model and continues it. (last mail from him somehow tells me he didn't resplit it yet.)

Anyway, i'm not working on it anymore.  sad_o.gif
