Hit_Sqd_Maximus 0 Posted August 5, 2003 I'm in nevada right now (I drove for 25 hours straight, not fun) and I have seen about 4 army national guard bases within 10 miles of each other and an airbase (with what looked like some dummy russian aircraft, I will get pictures of them if I can). I was wondering if anyone in this area knows if it is possible to get tours of them? Or at least be able to get closer to the abrams, m60's, and some weird looking m113 that they have sitting in the front. The tanks are only about 15 feet from the road. Can I just drive up there? Other than tourist traps, casinos, and offroading is there anything to do in Nevada? (Particularly in Reno/Carson city)

Guest Posted August 5, 2003 You might want to be a little bit careful about taking photos of military installations....considering current situations

If you were flying high enough you could probably see clear across the area, and whatever's in it. Just one thing to do if I ever fly through Nevada.

Shashman 0 Posted August 5, 2003 There's the Reno Air Races but I don't know how often it they take place. It's amazing. You get tuned up Mustangs and Spitfires racing around poles at 50m altitude at 500 km/h...Surreal As for checking out Area 51, watch it.Even participants in Red Flag are not allowed to overfly it
FSPilot 0 Posted August 5, 2003 You're not allowed to overfly it, but you can fly around the restricted area. On a good day you could probably see it.
ralphwiggum 6 Posted August 5, 2003 Probably will get 1. get warning boradcast 2. get warning shot around you 3. the guards will laugh as you drive in 4. you hit an anti-intrusion device which breaks your car 5. then you are taken into a nice tour of the base hospital on a stretcher. 6. get billed with medical costs and fine for trespassing since you are in Nevada, try shooting full-auto weapon or something of that sort. and take advantage of shows in LV. heard those hotels have great shows. or if you are a masochist and want to torture yourself, there is Celine Dion's show. for topic question, here's answer. Some bases will have visitor program. But not all. I know that Edwards base in CA has one(been there), but don't know if they suspended it after 9-11. My suggestion is that you ask for permission to see them, but most likely they will say no.
Shashman 0 Posted August 5, 2003 Reno air races! Reno air races!Reno air races! Ooooh!! And of course AMARC!(Aircraft Maintenance And Regeneration Centre) I'd LOVE to go there! It's basically a massive aircraft cemetery (I know it's sad ) where you got row upon row upon row of practically every aircraft the US armed forces have used in the past 50 years
hellfish6 7 Posted August 5, 2003 IIRC, Nevada Guard is the only Guard unit in the country certified to be OpFor at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin. I think they're the 1-221st Cavalry Squadron. Normal equipment is M-1s, M-2/3s, Kiowas, etc, and I think they also have "Soviet-ized" M113s and Hmmwvs, but they may leave those back in California. The Squadron website is down, but you may want to knock on the door or look them up in the local phone book. There should be active duty personnel at each armory, or at least a civillian custodian, who can give you info.

I think on the drive back I am going to visit nellis airbase. AWFC Public affairs site for tours and whatnot I called the national guard base and left a message. Maybe I can get a tour and hopefully some pictures of those tanks they have sitting in their parking lot for some modders or something.  edit: power of the yahoo AMARC Tours

No Joe Schmo can get in these days. You can probably get into an armory and look around if you talk to a recruiter....
