New verison of afghanistan island v3

Recommended Posts

hey guyz it's been a while since I last visited this official forum.   Yeah I know how you folks feel... I'll kill that island maker if he suddenly just changes all those changes in the island..... it screws up the missions!!! The worse thing is that I'll take my baseball bat and knock on his door biggrin_o.gif

ok...... I guess I'll take you guyz request and remake that huge city :-) I just thought it'll make people lag like hell especially when viewing that city from the hill... :-S

Ok well I do take constructive criticisms and opinions so thanks guyz ;) I'll take your words.  I'll make more changes so it'll be as user friendly as it can.  It's just that I still don't have enough help right now because my MOD members just finished their exams and wasn't able to get any until then.  I didn't have anyone to really beta test the dang island to :-S

sorry for making you guyz down but I promise I'll improve the island more by the next upgrade.  I'll receive more help by that time biggrin_o.gif

Again we're requesting for more mod members.  especially in the field of modelling and texturing.  ;) well hope to hear more criticisms.... constructive ones ofcourse :-D

Thanks Cat.   But also take a look at Sashman's suggestion about creating 3 seperate maps that all share the same textures and models from one main file.  That way we can enjoy 3 (or 2) great looking Afghanistan maps with a minimum of hard drive/RAM space.

As for the big city, I never had too much problems with lag unless I had alot of units.  But my computer is fairly decent also with a 1.8ghz processor and 512megs of RAM but with just a cheap TNT2 32meg Palit Daytona video card.

By the way I like your cat picture.  smile_o.gif

Hmmm....I think you misunderstood my point.

What I was saying was that it seems ludicrous making 3 islands which all share the same textures,buildings,etc...

I don't want to have to download THREE hefty addons which are all basically the same so that I can enjoy the missions which will be made on these islands  sad_o.gif

What I was trying to suggest was releasing one island, one big one (physically) which perhaps is composed of various other islands, kinda like the Suragao island. If you look it's composed of 2 (or 3 can't quite remember) islands each with different attributes.Or maybe just make it a big island with different environments in different parts. For example you could have a built up area in the South East, mountains in the North East and desert plains and hills in the West and greenery or whatever type of vegetation there is in Afghanistan covering the rest of the island.

I just don't want to download 3 40mb+ addons

/me transfers 0.02E to CAT's account

Ah ok... I understand now.  However you also misunderstood my point.  If the other maps share the same textures and models from one main island, then you would NOT need to download three 40meg files.  Only one 40meg file and two smaller (probably under 1meg) files.  In other words the two smaller maps would not work without the main map.

However I'm not sure if that's technically possible as I've never done any map making. I just know that some addons share textures in such a manner. But if it's possible I think it would make the most sense to go that route.

Also a problem with your solution of using a bigger map is that it would mean more objects on a map and hence more lag... something that CAT seems to want to avoid as much as possible.  For me, less CPU/RAM usage from the map means I can add more units for bigger battles.  smile_o.gif    His last one with the big southern city I don't think was too hard on the CPU on my computers (1.33 and 1.8ghz machines using the same 32meg TNT2 video cards).  But anything more and I think I'd probably start having problems.

This is technically possible. An example is Trinity Island, which uses Agent Smith's industrial addons, etc.

That is an example where reusable objects are extrenal to the island's PBO file itself. That way, if a new version of the island comes out, you don't need to download Agent Smith's addons again.

The same thing can be done here. A separate PBO with reusable textures and objects can be downloaded once and new Afghan Islands referencing those textures and objects can be created in the future with a much smaller download size.

That's your point, Miles, isn't it? rock.gifsmile_o.gif

Kinda sorta... Basically that's what I meant except that all the buildings and textures would be in the first map (catintro.pbo) instead of a seperate .pbo file with all the buildings. This way not only the models would be stored in the first main Afghan map, but also all the beautiful ground textures. But again I don't know if it's possible. But I imagine that it is if the texture paths of the other maps are all linked to that first main Afghan map addon.

I think the difference would be that if you want to play a mission on a 2nd island, you'll be using up more memory because you're also loading the 1st island into memory and not just its objects and textures.

Mind you, I don't know how to quantify the difference in memory utilization between the two cases.

erm...I am drooling over here but ofp.info hates me again..

theavonlady you think you could host the file again if its not to much to ask for?

yeah that's what I mean. The Catintro.pbo will include all the base files (textures, buildings, and stuffs.) and so when I release a different part of Afghanistan, it'll only include some textures (for that section of the island), some buildings (for the section of the island) and the wrp file... which will keep the file size under 10MB or 8MB (hopefully.)

Well I've been very busy through out this 9 days here in the states... it's all because of these college orientations, brothers college graduation, tours around the states, and cities,,,,, :-D But I had fun and bought many nice cloth smile_o.gif Pheonix, Arizona and Seattle, Washington both very very nice place ;) You guyz should visit sometimes. Well anyways, I'll start working again smile_o.gif I'll be visiting this forum more frequently since I registered smile_o.gif

The custom island textures are what eat up the most disk space, not the objects, AFAIK...

This depends entirely on the resolution of the textures, but yes, wrp files aren't often over a mb, whereas...

128x128 pixel .paa file = 11kb

256x256 pixel .paa file = 44kb

512x512 pixel .paa file = 171kb

On an island which uses (for example) 100 custom textures (and that's not a lot by any means) you can see the numbers go up pretty sharply by each level.

My personal feeling is that the best way to go is to keep all the textures in a separate pbo. That way (and thanks to Da Coronor for this method) you can use 128x128 or 512x512 textures, so long as the pbo they are in and the textures themselves have exactly the same names. Easy peasy smile_o.gif

Just some of my notes...

There ARE some asphalt roads in Afghanistan, especially in the bigger cities. I think basic CWC road model could be used here. I'm positive about that, I remember very clearly seeing that on some news not a long time ago. So: add more roads! (Yeah, I know it's boring and time-taking sad_o.gif )

Second point: more fences and walls in the cities, more details please. That will make them loking more realistic and restrict view a bit => higher framerate.

Apart from those, it's the best map ever relased for OFP. smile_o.gifsmile_o.gif

Personally i use the mod folders plus an addon manager.  I have three shortcuts.  One for modern day stuff, basically just general missions.  The other two are for WW2 and Vietnam.  I do this since when i play any of those i won't be using the addons from the other ones.  Boosts performance a great deal.

What add-on manager are you using? I'm curious as to how to do this.

hey guyz smile_o.gif it's me CAT after a long tiring work on my Afghan island... the visitors was released.... good news? or bad news? I consider it as being a bad news since it makes all those hard works turn to dust!! It's not like I'm mad at the BIS.. it's just the timing... argg I finished more than half of Afghanistan with more road enplacements and stuffs... but since the visitors was released... I had to do everything from scratch. I could of continue on my work but it would taken longer on wrp editor. So I'm doing everything from scratch with visitors right now (exept the terrain.) So you guyz will find many different placement of the natural objects..... sorry. Also some different placement of buildings because I don't remember the exact placement of these stuffs. But the road placements will be better looking ;) so ....... well I guess in some way you could call it a good news. smile_o.gif currently I remade 3around 60~70 ~80% of what I was done smile_o.gif I'll be there soon.

sorry another bad news.... yes since i gotta make everything from scratch and since the visitors won't allow me to use the already existing texture......... the file size will be huge and you guyz gotta re download that killer file size... maybe around 60MB or 55MB... gosh I love this tool but sometimes it makes me wonder why BIS didn't allow us to use the already existing texture... sad_o.gif well that's it I'm going back to my work (Afghanistan.)

God I really feel bad for 56k, it took me 2 ours when I had AOL to download 10Mbs.

i downloaded the opgwc demo the night before i went to sleep, and ater i came home from school it was at 95% then waited about 20 or 30 minutes and it was done.. i downloaded this map overnight as well.. it was like at 60 or 70% when i woke up.. and when i got back it was all done. But now that its summer i cant kill time by just going to school and letting things download.

but it doesnt really get to me much. Broadband cannot yet be installed on the street i live on or something like that.

You should check whether it is because they don't have the equipment installed, or because you are too far away from the exchange.

The first problem can be solved by waiting, the second by moving tounge_o.gif
