Tovarish 0 Posted May 18, 2003 Plane. In the 8 years i've been in Ottawa, 3 times I've been in a bus that was involved in an accident - one sideswiped a cyclist (had a bit of road rash but otherwise ok) One hit a car at an intersection, and one lost control in the winter and ran into a stop sign. I've flown more than a few dozen times and the only incident was when our plane was struck by lightning before takeoff in Ukraine
reedkiller 0 Posted May 18, 2003 I usually feel blissfully safe where ever I am. Also depends on what the bus/plane is doing. If the bus/plane is 50,000ft skywards I would feel safer in the plane.
FSPilot 0 Posted May 18, 2003 Planes are statistically safer than buses anyway. To be honest I don't really feel unsafe anywhere, unless it's like a 5 day old airline with a 500 hour pilot and duct tape on the wing. Even then I'd probably be pretty safe. Anyway, safer on a plane for a lot of reasons.
Tovarish 0 Posted May 18, 2003 The one time I felt some amused aprehension towards the safety of a plane was when I got on a Cubana IL-62m from Montreal to Havana in 98 and noticed that with the passenger's being roughly 90% French-Canadians and 10% hispanic, the instructions on the emergency exit doors were still written in Cyrillic . That and the stewardess had no hesitation in serving a 16 year old kid travelling alone rum and cokes .
FSPilot 0 Posted May 18, 2003 The only time I've ever felt unsafe on an airplane I've probably babbled about on this forum before. My instructor and I were about to land (this is in a 60's model piper PA-28-180, cockpit looks like a B-17 ). I was on final and started to adjust power to establish myself on the glideslope. I had been high on downwind and base so I had a low power setting. Somewhere in the power adjustment the RPMs jumped a good 500 RPMs, then went back down to normal. I thought for sure the engine was going to quit, but it didn't. Turned out to be a problem with the carburetor heat. Then there's the time I got lost over southern new jersey on my first solo cross-country. Thank God for Atlantic City Intl. approach control.
Tovarish 0 Posted May 18, 2003 On the flip side I guess there's the fact you're more much more likely to survive an accident in a bus than in a plane. I mean I've already seen 3 bus accidents, one involving another motor vehicle and one where the bus lost control and went off the road. If a plane hits another plane or looses control... That lightning strike on the ground did give us all quite a scare though. I'm pretty sure I now know what an explosion sounds like from inside a plane. Renagade 0 Posted May 18, 2003 Hitting some bad air on a planes freaky its like the planes drops a bit like if u were travelling in a car then suddenly went over a 1 metre drop on the road
DarkLight 0 Posted May 18, 2003 I picked the bus, i feel safe pretty much everywhere but if i really had to pick one i'd take the bus...
VXR 9 Posted May 18, 2003 Heh this reminds me of yesterday.... i was very stoned in the bus with 2 mates of me, and the bus drove over a road with on the sides of the road forest. And i had some flashbacks on movies where you see some rebels ambushing a bus. Inside the bus of me everybody was quite you coudl only hear the sound of the engine. then i had those movies in my mind again. i got so scared of thinking the bus could be ambushed maybe in a sec... i never had that before but it was because i was super stoned
FallenPaladin 0 Posted May 18, 2003 I voted for plane. There are a lot more accidents on the streets than in the air.

Jinef 2 Posted May 18, 2003 Never get high? That's a bit authoritarian isn't it? It's nice when you're a student to get a bit distanced from the rigours of daily life. Also mind expanding stuff can be useful. Some of the best poetry and literature has been written by people off their heads on opium and shit, e.g. John Keats Anyway i know a bus driver and airline pilots and assuming they are representative of the majority i would prefer to fly. Jamesia 0 Posted May 18, 2003 I said bus. Because I feel that I could jump fairly safely out of the window of a bus before it crashed into something.
SFG 1 Posted May 18, 2003 The only bad experience ive had with a plane was.. 32,000 ft. Somewhere over the mideast, I had to use the restroom. They told everyone to remain seated because of heavy turbulance, but when you gotta go.. you gotta go right? So I made my way to the back, entered the restroom. I'm beginning to piss, and suddenly we hit the worst turbulance ive ever been in. My piss is flying around the tiny restroom and i'm hanging on for dear life by the handicap railings on the side... Luckly it stopped soon after, I zipped up and went out. I feel bad for the janitor who had to clean that up

DarkLight 0 Posted May 18, 2003 A very important thing probable is that when your bus has an accident the chance that you'll survive it is pretty big. While when a plane crashes the chance that you survive is a lot smaller. Now of course, the chance of having an accident on the road is bigger than the chance that your plane crashes. I guess that's something to think about too... If you're in a car, the chance of crash is bigger but you have more chance of survival. In a plane, the chance of a crash is smaller than in a car but when you do crash your chance of survival is a lot smaller.

Safety standards are higher, and per capita I am sure there are less bus accidents than plane accidents.  I've been on one school bus and one city bus in an accident.  And even in the most extreme flight on a plane I never felt unsafe.  I've also never again seen a mountain goat look DOWN at me while I've been looking out the window of a plane
