Tex -USMC- 0 Posted May 15, 2003 Well, I just got back from the 10 PM showing, and I am a little confused. Not by the plot, which was appropriately deep and yet fairly simple. Nor by the action, which is so tightly choreographed and visually stunning that words can't really do them justice. I was confused by the overall experience, how it all ties together, and whether it will make sense when I finally do sort it out. Don't get me wrong, it was a thoroughly enjoyable movie- the slow parts are interesting, the action is as close to perfect as one can expect, and the car chase that is the set piece is bar-none, one of the most incredible and enjoyable action sequences ever put to film. Anyways, here we go. Over the next week or so, you're probably going to hear a lot of bad things about this movie. Not from the fans, but from pretentious critics who enjoy trashing everything that does not fit into their personal ouevre. They'll say that the action is cliche'd, the philosophy is amateurish, and that overall the movie feels like a cashing in sequel rather than an attempt to do something new. Of course, I'm sure they have their points (I'll have to see the movie again and probably again to formulate a really solid opinion), but I found the opposite of all three to be true, at least at first glance. Right now I just don't have the energy to write a full review, so let me just finish this first post up with one simple bit of advice. When you finish seeing the movie, Stay until the credits end. If you want to know why, then sit and wait, or ask someone else about it. If you are a Matrix fan, it will be well worth your time, I promise you. Good night. However, that formula isn't the same for X-rated pornographic movies. There are few actors who can ruin a movie like he can, I simply can't understand how anyone allows him in. Take for instance the rather brilliant Dracula movie by Francis Ford Coppola. Gary Oldman gives a mindblowing performance, and so does Anthony Hopkins.. then comes Keanu Reeves; a surfer dude trying to play a classic gentleman and failing so bad that I had to pluck toenails out of my heels after watching it. Actually i think Keanu ( roughly translated as 'cool breeze over the mountains' ) Reeves is a great actor, a genius in fact. You know it makes sense. Hes actually asking questions of the fundamental nature and elusive parameters of reality. His leitmotif of pseudo-feeble and inappropriate acting partially disrupts and undermines the suspension of disbelief allowing each film he is in to transcend its genre conventions, and thus become a platform for subtly transmitting the existential angst that has infected his heart since a young age. Keanu Reeves is an ever surprising loki-esque character seemingly always out of place and time. The punkish pop prince of deconstructionism, he makes us perhaps uncomfortably aware of the triviality, the essential deceptiveness and falseness at the heart of the popular medium of this age. Anyway back to subverting the focus of this topic, i havent seen the film so i actually should stop typing this post right now. A film i have recently (sort of) enjoyed watching is David Lynchs Blue Velvet. I cant believe i have missed this disturbing film for so long. Dennis Hoppers performance is the infamous one but i actually found Dean Stockwells performance as gender-bending 'madam' Ben ("Damn you are one suave f*ck!") to be at least as disturbingly great. I recommend it to everyone (especially the faint hearted). Dont watch The Matrix: Reloaded ,watch Blue Velvet. Or Twin Peaks. Or Dune. Or Bram Stokers Dracula .Or Bill and Teds Bogus Journey... barcode6 0 Posted May 16, 2003 Keanu does say some stupid things, but heres something cool: He donated a big chunk (if not all) of his points (his percentage of the box office, merchandising, DVDs etc) to the back room staff. The film crew, special effects guys and the rest of the grunts are going to be dividing about 20 million between them. That's just if the movie does as well as the first. Mind you, he kept all of the 20 million he made in salary, but he is one of the few hollywood types that has realized he is making more money than he needs, and all the real work goes unrewarded. Now if only he could act. While I think the Matrix is his best effort and he does work hard, casting him is the only reason why it isn't my favorite movie of all time. Nagual 0 Posted May 16, 2003 I just saw it, and liked it. The action was great, especially the car scene. I dont really like movies in general, but was happy with this one. The philosophy of the movie is pretty deep, most of it would go over peoples heads (way over their heads). Considering the movie is effectively a medium of conveying particular concepts (which are already more than well know by some people), it does very well, as those particular concepts are often described as "silent-knowledge", things which words can't describe. In real life people try to teach the same things with all sorts of words, but the best they can hope for is to try to convey a "feeling", hoping students can use that feeling to launch into action, making for actual knowledge (experience). Though there are very few people who actual do teach anything, and they are deliberatly hard to find. The matrix does well to convey a feeling, thats to say the least. I also like it as its the only contemporay example of the culture and system the word "nagual" come from. Even the scene with the "Architect" had references to an extremely esoteric myth / system called the "The Rule", down to details like numbers of males and females. Anyhoo, i know an engineer that develops mainstream technologies, he's been saying for a long time (before the first matrix) that computer technolgy will progress over the next 20 years, to the point that things like VR will be abe to fully reproduce a world as real as this one. So gaming would involve stepping into a entire world, and living the the story / experience. He also believes that after a while people will get bored with it, as while in the game or simulation they will still be themselves. So to take the step of full immersion, peeps will create memory blocks, so they can have fully authentic experiences. I didnt see any probs with the acting, i think neo is meant to be "wooden". The whole production has a nice surreal tinge to it, and the actors complement that (imo). I have heard something simular, although this is not for little children to know. Rumors are, that scientific studies show that in the next 60 or 90 years, a huge computer will be made that simulates everything here on earth. When we die, they keep our bodies in storage so we do not rot, and our brain does not decompose. They hook us up to this computer, and boom, we are alive again. We are in a computer program and our brain is recieving information the computer tells us. We see, and we hear, everything that is told to us in the computer, and in the real life. We can interact with living people in real life also. The brain sends the data to what it wants to say, the computer translates the brain signals, and we are interacting with a dead/alive person.
