phoebus 0 Posted May 9, 2003 HI, i just wanted to know your idea of the best controller to play OFP, a game that requires a good aiming (quick and accurate) as well as many action/move commands. I personnally opted for the Strategic commander in my left hand (move/action/radio command) and optical cordless mouse in the right hand (aiming and action wheel menu) what about you ? comments about advantages and drawbacks of any methods are welcome
Skul 0 Posted May 9, 2003 Whoah! 50/50! Anyway, I chose Keyboard 'n' Mouse. Those faithful two have never failed me. Used them ever since Half-Life came out. EDIT: 50/50 at the time of writing this...
benu 1 Posted May 9, 2003 Keyboard and mouse, and joystick when flying choppers or planes. I am experimenting with joystick with mouse and game commander and mouse but keyboard has won so far cause i'm used to this combination for years...
Romolus 0 Posted May 10, 2003 keyboard + mouse for infantry joystick + throttle + pedals for planes and choppers programmed buttons on the throttle + mouse for tank commander
reedkiller 0 Posted May 12, 2003 Having no hands makes OFP very fustrating. I banged the keybord with my head for ages trying to type the key code. Fortunatly for me the OFP AI are idiots so I stand a chance of winning the odd game.
Balschoiw 0 Posted May 16, 2003 Trackball for regular infantry jobs, Joystick for flying, keyboard for the rest BTW it´s pretty hard to get a good trackball for lefthanders like me. Does anyone know a trackball for both right and lefthanded or a neutral one like the one I have ? I am searching for a trackball with some additional buttons. Shashman 0 Posted May 16, 2003 I use kb+mouse for infantry and ground vehicles including armour, keyboard and mouse for choppers (although have started using joystick..Just a matter of getting used to the reverse throttle ) and joystick for fixed wing aircraft... phoebus 0 Posted May 19, 2003 Well, thank you all for your participation look like i'm the only one to use the microsoft strategic commander, though i found it was the optimal tool for the kind of game you have to move, aim and act a lot (radio command or quick action) Maybe the lot of you don't even know the stuff as it was rarely tested or displayed in hardware news ? First of all : I have NO part with Microsoft products or business, I usually think Microsoft really SUCKS and they do NOT send me money to talk about their products. Strategic commander is a left hand controller to use with mouse in the right hand. the turtle back perfectly fit in an adult-size hand, getting 8 keys under your fingertips, and 3 more under your thumb. the whole stuff act as a 3 axes joystick (X-Y and rotation) on its static basement. An easy GUI allow you to remmap all the keys as keyboard shortcut or even keyboard script (sequences of keyboard action with delay between each key) allowing to organize a whole patrol squad with one keytouch (Ex: all disembark + all engage at will + all take cover... with one touch) Furthermore, the 3 thumb keys act as shift1 shift2 shift3 upon the 6 first buttons on the top, allowing 18 key sequence under you fingers. and if this was not enough, one switch at the base of the controller allow you to choose from 3 preprogrammed combination during the game, thus giving you access to ((6*3)+2)*3=60 mapped keys, all with one hand ! I used to play keyboard and mouse (especially on the whole half-life and its sequels) before i bought this controller, it takes about a week to get use to its many keys and switches but once this is done, you can't even think to play without it... bn880 5 Posted May 19, 2003 No kidding keyboard and mouse, since it's such a pain to configure controllers for OFP, and the mouse makes it unbelievably easy to control anything.
GoOB 0 Posted May 20, 2003 Keyboard+mouse (the MX-500 gotta love it ) And the keyboard and mouse combo makes everything feel like a breeze. But i am trying using a joystick for planes i dont think it's going to be that much difference.
Tovarish 0 Posted May 22, 2003 Keyboard and mouse. Joystick when flying, but mouse again for landing choppers - I find you get more precise control while hovering. *edit* Hmm, no "Keyboard, mouse, AND Joystick option"?
edc 0 Posted May 22, 2003 I use keyboard/mouse for ground vehicles, and the mouse for helos. For fixed wing a/c I would use my joystick, though it unfortunately won't work w/ my new computer.
Winters 1 Posted May 23, 2003 Keyboard & Mouse (logitech cordless, optical mouse) never failed me yet. I also use my Joystick when i am Tanking. *Edit: 500 spams and counting wOOhOO
Renagade 0 Posted May 23, 2003 The straategic c ommander seems like a good alternative for the keyboard but u still need the keyboard for thhe additional commands. Quote[/b] ]BTW it´s pretty hard to get a good trackball for lefthanders like me. Does anyone know a trackball for both right and lefthanded or a neutral one like the one I have ? u never get "good" trackballs, period. The best one i`ve seen that would suit ur needs would be the logitech marble mouse. The only problem is theres only 2 buttons and the balls a little small but ur fingers can touch 2/3 of the balll unlike other trackballs where u can only touch half. Harnu 0 Posted May 26, 2003 That just looks confusing
Renagade 0 Posted May 27, 2003 That just looks confusing  Their totally easy to  use its  just that  they all  need  fine  tuning to make them  better, infact i demand logitech hires me as an input device consultant u just hold  it a  bit  like u would  with a mouse and put ur thumb on one  of the  side buttons depending  if  ur right or  left handed then  u place ur fingers on the ball and u  roll the  ball around with  ur fingers  instead of moving a mouse around on a table and use  ur  pinky to hit the button  on the other side if needed. bonko the sane 2 Posted May 30, 2003 But i am trying using a joystick for planes i dont think it's going to be that much difference. I use the usual Keyboard + Mouse for everything, except for fixed wing planes,on those i use joystick only.... @GoOB = Try doing a simple looping with a mouse
