It's possible thatsome U.S. broadband sites may be overloading the feed. We can't say for sure. Certainly many independent viewers from around the world are simply trying to watch which could explain everything.

There is a nice 4.3MB pdf summary about Iraq on globalsecurity.org, also including the military structure:

Globalsecurity.org Iraq Country Handbook

Al-Jazeera Web site hacked

Hackers attacked the Web site of Arab satellite television network Al-Jazeera on Tuesday, rendering it intermittently unavailable, the site's host said.

The newly launched English-language page, which went live Monday, was hardest hit in a bombardment of data packets known as a denial-of-service attack.

Ayman Arrashid, Internet system administrator at the Horizons Media and Information Services, the site's Web host, said the attack began Tuesday morning local time.

The Web host is based in the Persian Gulf state of Qatar. The servers that host the Al-Jazeera site are in France and the United States. Only the U.S. servers were under attack, said Arrashid, so the attackers were likely in the United States.

He said technicians were working to thwart the attack, but could not estimate when the site would be fully available again.

Al-Jazeera, also based in Qatar, is an unusually independent and powerful voice in the Arab world whose broadcasts of U.S. prisoners and war dead has angered many Americans. The English site carries at least one picture of a dead U.S. soldier.

Representatives of the broadcaster could not immediately be reached for comment.

In denial-of-service attacks, hackers normally send a deluge of false requests to Web servers, overloading them and making them unavailable to surfers.

Earthviewer - "3-D Globe/Satellite Viewer" - Program

Im sure a lot of you may already know about this program (Earthviewer). I had a chance to try it for a while (you get a 30 day trial) and thought it was pretty sweet. Its a program that lets you look a satellite photos all put together to make a "3-d globe". It seems to be a little limited however on what you can see (some areas are blacked out)..and im not sure how up to date the photos are but its very cool anyways. The link takes you to where you can download it. I also thought this may be good for you FallenPaladin...since you wanted photos from all around the world.

Where can I find gun camera footage? I'm looking for that shot of the tank hiding under the bridge. I'm sure you all know what I mean.

Just a small follow up on Al Jazeera

NavLink has confirmed to MyDomain that it has regained access to the account at Network Solutions and changed the nameservers back to the correct settings. The nameserver changes typically take between 24 and 72 hours to propagate on the Internet.

The hacker changed the Web sites nameservers to point to MyDomain nameservers and erected a page displaying the American flag.

How cute smile.gif

Robert Fisk is one of my favourite reporters. Why? His picture of the Kosovo war matches perfectly with mine, so I trust his reporting.

please take a note that the infamous C-130 gunship video is considered unacceptable on this forum. deducing from it, some videos would be inappropriate.

this thread is more about posting internet sources where we can get updated news, not about being a directory to find some extreme images/movies.

It would seem that Aljazeera has been up for two or so days now. (website) But now suddenly many users are getting access denied errors to english.aljazeera.net. Due to blocking.

A fitting comment from someone if I may:

It is shame that the so called civilised world could be curtailng the freedom of press

<span id='postcolor'>

This is pretty bad news what some (presumably) American hacker pulled off. We don't get a good balance of news from both sides with Aljazeera cripled. I remember their video stream was quite good until this. They are however taking their news to mobile phones, you may wish to look into that.

A mirror of al-Jazeera english website before it was taken down by someone against this freedom: english.aljazeera.freedom
