Guest Posted March 22, 2003 Unit YAMAS - In charge on domestic (within Israel) CT missions. Sayeret MATKAL - In charge on foreign (outside Israeli borders) CT missions The guys from YAMAS dress like Palestinians and throw rocks with them... then turn around and arrest the ringleaders, VERY dangerous job. Â They paint their guns to prevent FF from other Israeli units in the area. See the red on the muzzle?
DJOlmstead 0 Posted March 22, 2003 I agree with rufusmac. That sounds like a very dangerous job, and it would be pretty funny to see the looks on the rioters' faces when all of a sudden they have guns in their face.
Shashman 0 Posted March 22, 2003 Hmm..you should make a distiction between "civilian" special forces like for example the French GIGN or GIPN and military special forces like DELTA Force...It is very hard to say IMHO which special forces are the best. Each one is better at a certain task than an other.Heh..being British I'd have to say the SAS, but I am also half Italian so I'd have to say Col Moschin. Guest jacobaby Posted March 22, 2003 Mods, move this one over eh? All I will say is that SAS instructors train other special forces in certain aspects. I think as far as covert insertion and covert ops go the SAS and SBS are highly efficient. Just look how the RM were able to move into the al Fao area an secure it. All of that would have ben down to SBS covert recce missions/planning, they would have been in operation for some time before the deadline, making highly detailed intelligence reports. I dont think it is for no reason that they got the job ;o) TJ
Milkman 1 Posted March 22, 2003 I say the SAS, just because they have the most expierience and the best record in my opinion.

Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted March 22, 2003 disagree, Yamas is a very good unit indeed but not trained for all terrain. Put them out of the desert into the swiss alps and they are screwed. All-terrain units are those that rule!

ran 0 Posted March 22, 2003 i'd say the various specialised platoons and sections of the 2nd airborne and 6th engineer foreign legion regiments who are apart of the french COS (french special operations command) -edit-: legio patria nostra forever
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted March 22, 2003 SAS are the first and best of the military special ops forces. It does depend on the specific area of specialty you are talking about. The SAS has a lock on standard drop in, boogey out sabotage, CT, and recon missions, but other forces specialize in different areas. For example, the US Green Berets are the best in guerrilla conflict situations and training irregular paramilitary forces, which is why you can find them in Afghanistan, Northern Iraq, Colombia, and Vietnam in earlier years. All depends on the particular area of duty- like that Israeli unit that apparently is the best in the world at conducting combination riot-control/sting operations lol
Placebo 29 Posted March 22, 2003 I voted SAS because I'm biased
ran 0 Posted March 22, 2003 i vote SAS because in my opinion , the 22nd SAS is the mother of all SF (an you'll notice that i'm french ) anyway , why the polish GROM and not more popular units like the german KSK or GSG9 or the GIGN or some other units like israeli ones ?? KingBeast 0 Posted March 23, 2003 I voted for SAS, mainly because im British, but more importantly because the general view from other such special forces members seems to put a lot of faith in the SAS. At the end of the day, all such Special Forces are pretty "Special" and you wont generally see them making monumental cockups. So even if the SAS are the best in their track record and reputation, i would say the margin between them and others is miniscule.
Polishdude 0 Posted March 23, 2003 I didn't add CT units because they are considered Police units.
brgnorway 0 Posted March 23, 2003 Who's best? It really depends on a lot of factors such as what kind of mission and goal, terrain, climatic environment etc. Most specialists would be a waisted resource in any other given environment or task than the ones they are specificaly prepared for. I'll give you an example: during every winter training here in Norway the SAS receive spanking from rather ordinary and standard norwegian conscript based units - because of the special coastal and alpine climate and terrain. The norwegian special force "Marine jeger kompaniet" would be the best here - and in most arctic and alpine conditions, but I suspect some german units would put up a good fight though - I believe they are very similar. One also have to remember that "special ops" are not to be used in "ordinary battles" . They are far too precious and are supposed to be undetected. A few years ago the norwegian military established a new force called "Forsvarets spesial kommando" or "The military's special command" and they largely recruit their soldiers from the "Marinejegerkompani" . They are trained for everything the marinejegers do, but are also trained for counterterrorist role and are specialist on offshore missions (norwegian offshore supply ships and oilplatforms) . They are currently deployed in Afghanistan as a reconnaisance unit.

KingBeast 0 Posted March 23, 2003 I dont really know about the SAS capabilities in viking territory, so you are probably right there brg , though I think its well known that the SAS are very well trained in jungle warfare, and living and fighting in the jungle has to be one of the hardest and most gruelling things any kind of military can partake in.
