Hit_Sqd_Maximus 0 Posted March 17, 2003 Since there might be a war in the next few hours/days/weeks, I was wondering what types of stocks go up during wars, well the stocks that go up the most. For example; utility companies, oil companies, internet companies, electronics manufacturers and the list goes on How will the Canadian stock exchange be effected? KingBeast 0 Posted March 17, 2003 I myself am not sure which stocks would rise or fall, though I would have thought that by now, making money on it wouldnt really be possible.

<span id='postcolor'> Anything under the umbrella of the Carlyle group will do well. They mostly deal in arms and pharmaceuticals. That, and GWB's dad works for them (can you say conflict of intrest?), as well as the former head of the SEC, the former british PM John Major and a veritable who's who of former Washington power brokers. Carlyle has an insane return on their holdings, but I'm not sure if they are public or not. Also look into anything Haliburton does, especially Halliburton KBR (formerly Brown and Root). They specialise in rebuilding infrastructure damaged in wartime, and they are currently very busy in Afghanistan. They are also the ones that built the Guantanamo Bay terrorist holding facility (and the new airbase in Qatar, I beleive) and their ties to the VP are well documented as he was the former CEO. Another one is Dyncorp, they are a private contractor that the DoD farms out stuff to like IT infrastructure and Air America type stuff in Coloumbia. They are currently in a bit of a scandal due to alleged employee involvement in the sex rings in the former Yugoslavia but they will always do well due to their DoD ties. So much for ethical investing....
Hit_Sqd_Maximus 0 Posted March 17, 2003 Is this their site? If they are public, any idea which exchange they use? edit, nevermind, I think you have to have an income of over 200,000 a year to qualify to invest with them.

Guest Posted March 17, 2003 Raytheon (RTN:NYSE) is a safe bet, especially since the US military has said that it would start the war with a massive cruise missile attack. (Raytheon makes the Tomahawk cruise missiles) Northrop-Grumman (NOC:NYSE) is another no-brainer. They are also one of the largest US defense contractors. FSPilot 0 Posted March 18, 2003 And now the democrats will say that this is because of something Daschle did. Frankly I wouldn't know how to invest in the stock market in the first place. Maybe look up "broker" in the yellow pages or something, I bet my Dad would know. Anyway, does anybody know who makes bombs for the USAF? I figure since so many of them are going to be dropped demands gonna go up and yadda yadda, so will their stocks. Is it a different company for different types of bombs? edc 0 Posted March 18, 2003 I believe Boeing makes some of the JDAM bombs. Yeah, I was kinda surprised that the markets reacted so well to what was eccentially a declaration of war. The Dow went up like 280 points. I don't think I'd be very good as a broker either, the one stock I've bought (MEH)(which I bought @ $25) is at about $1.70 now (though it did actually go up today ). theavonlady 2 Posted March 18, 2003 I think Microsoft is the biggest US bomb maker (to our great detriment), based on their great stock performance these last few days.

Guest Posted March 18, 2003 I have a total lack of talent when it comes to stocks. I always somehow manage to sell at the local minima and buy at the local maxima. Yesterday I sold all my Ericsson shares in the morning when it began to fall. I sold at 5.10. In the afternoon it was at 6.70. I had purchased them at 6.50 about a month ago. I take at least a little comfort in that they are down to 6.10 now. I've moved my money now from the Stockholm stock exchange to NYSE. I figure that the US markets are a better bet right now considering the Iraq situation. So far it's looking good, up 4% since yesterday and rising. Knowing my previous track record, I doubt that it will hold Edit: Did I say 6.10? It's 5.85 now. BWAHAHA ...schadenfreude is the only real true joy in the world
