[GM] Cold War - Nogovan Armed Forces

Some members of the community may have seen I have been posting images of a new mod I've been working on my twitter account and over on the Arma Cold Warriors Discord. Anyway I thought I would formally announce it on these forums. After a break of a few years, due to other commitments I am now back making some content for Arma3. I am in the process of using GM assets and uniforms to make some Cold War Era Nogovan Armed Forces. This carries on my Nogovan Armed Forces made for OFP, Arma2 and Arma3. Also I've always preferred this era of warfare as Operation Flashpoint is where my BI gaming journey began.

Anyway on to the plans, I will be using GM assets to have the following infantry units:

  • Nogovan Light Infantry with G3s
  • Nogovan Paratroopers with G3s
  • Nogovan Highland Rangers with G3s and Soviet Gear
  • Armoured Vehicles - likely to stick with Soviet gear
  • Light Vehicles - a mix of soviet and german/dutch gear
  • Air - a mix of soviet and german

ArmA_3_Screenshot_2020.09.18_-_11.59.25.

Work In Progress Uniforms - i had to much fun with Photoshop one afternoon. I am probably going to keep all the different uniform variants. I would like to add a desert and winter version.

Alpha Release can be found on steam - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2423760500

Looks very nice, even though I wouldn't want to be NAF armourer/logistic - 7.62 NATO G3 and 7.62 Russian PKM in one squad, would make me go crazy! :D

Well as of yet I am still undecided on armaments, likely to go towards NATO 7.62 with Soviet arms for special forces. I am happy to take suggestions, but trying to avoid to many addon dependencies.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Yugoslavia have a weird mix like that in real life? I know they had their Zastava AK platforms which used eastern block rounds? PKM's of course did, and then I think they also used an MG42 (MG3?) variant.

@R0adki11 I'm not really criticizing, this sort of mish-mash is not ideal from logistics point of view, but it happened at least for some real life countries. Also, G3+PKM combo would be more interesting than most of other GlobMob adaptations were G3 is usually paired with MG3.

Now, the real cool thing to do would be giving infantry HK32 - IIRC you toyed with such idea back in OFP times. Quite obviously there's no HK32 in GlobMob, but maybe it can be achieved with magazine proxies? If GlobMob have them for G3s (I'm not sure).

@Broseph_Stalin90 Not really in case of Yugoslavia. They had Soviet 7.62x39 M43 intermediate cartridge for their individual arms (SKS and AK derivatives) all along, but when it comes to "support" weapons for full-power rifle ammo Yugoslavia first used 8mm Mauser (M76 AK-based DMR and local MG42 derivative), and adopted 7.62x54 only in late 80s (replacing MG42 with M84 PK derivative, and M76 with M91). But as I said earlier - what R0adki11 made is not unheard of, I'm pretty sure Kenya (for example) uses G3 as standard infantry rifle, and PKM as standard GPMG (lately they got some M4s and M240s from US via various assitance programs).

I actually still have an HK32 model from Arma2 which never got released. It works in Arma3, just needs better sounds and animations. Textures are still Arma2 quality, but otherwise it works.

The idea about these Cold War Nogovan's is that they will be formed after the wars in the 80s. This background story which I use as the basis for my Nogovans will hopefully show where I am headed.

Quote

Following the wars that ravaged the islands in the 1980’s, it was decided that the old militia system of weekend warriors with a minimum of training was insufficient to ensure the defence of the Nogovan Republic. Permanent armed forces based on universal conscription were therefore established, built around a core of former FIA guerilla’s and returned expatriate officers.

The modest resources of the islands of Nogova, Everon and Malden preclude massive investment into modern armaments, leading to an emphasis on acquiring smart soldiers rather than smart weaponry. Rigorous and extensive training programs have been developed to ensure that raw recruits are brought to a high professional standard with a variety of military skills. In joint exercises with Western militaries Nogovan draftees have outperformed the foreign regular counterparts on multiple occasions. All soldiers must pass an extended basic training for a period of six months before entering advanced military training. Part of the soldiers are then enrolled in the combat arms, part in the supporting services. Due to the relatively long initial training all forces have a firm background in basic infantry skills regardless of their subsequent specialisation.

The main part of recruits enter the light infantry which provides soldiers with training for operations in both alpine and desert conditions. Nogovan light infantry doctrine places a high value on dispersed and independent operations by platoon sized units against numerically superior or more heavily armed forces, mimicking the resistance tactics developed in the wars against the Soviets.

Part of the troops are assigned to the armoured corps, which specialises in combined operations with tanks and armoured personnel carriers. The Nogovan Light Horse endorses fast aggressive tactics to quickly disrupt airborne or amphibuous invasions before initial assault forces are able to establish a firm bridgehead. Its reliance on brute force contrasts with the more fluid tactics of the rest of the army.

After basic military training and the light infantry course the best and brightest of the recruits can volunteer for service with the airborne company, undergoing extensive advanced training imparting airborne and amphibuous infiltration techniques, demolitions skills and use of foreign weaponry and equipment. Endurance and initiative are highly stimulated in airborne candidates, a high number of whicheventually enter non commissioned – and subaltern officer training courses at the Viktor Troska Military Institute. The Nogovan Military Constabulary performs various duties in both the civilian and military sphere. Its primary task is that of military police, though it also backs up the national police force with regard to crowd control and by providing an armed response team for high risk arrests and CT duty. In conjunction with the Fisheries and Customs Enforcement Squadron the NMC acts as the border guard.

Reservist forces are organised into Defense Battalions of uneven size and composition for local defence and support of the regular army’s operations. Their makeup more or less reflects that of the standing army, albeit on a smaller scale. The Defense Battallions consist largely of light infantry with platoon – and company sized combined arms teams. Reservists wear the berets of their former active units, though with the reservist beret badge. Reservists with a good service record can volunteer for six month tours on the Nogovan PfP platoon which has served with UN and international peacekeeping missions on three continents.

Little is reliably known about the ‘Troska Troop’ or the Nogovan Highland Rangers which does not even feature on the official Order of Battle. The existence of these special operations forces is not widely disputed however. No special insignia or other distinguishing marks are attested and it is thought that they usually operate in civilian or in the guise of airborne soldiers to prevent attracting attention. A series of incidents on Russian army bases on Kolgujev in the late eighties and early nineties is sometimes rumoured to have been the work of NHR operatives, allegedly including the theft of an attack helicopter later reported ‘lost at sea’ by Russian officials.

Cold War - Nogovan Armed Forces

Mod Update, here are my current plans. But it may change of course.

Camouflage for the infantry has been finalised, I will be using the Polish Uniform retextured as the main default uniform which all the appropriate vests etc. I will add a few retextured West German infantry for Paratroopers and Special Forces.

Weapons:
Hk32 main rifle, G3s for reservist. FN-Mag or PKM for LMG. A hunting rifle would be nice. AT likely to be RPGs. AA to be Stinger (care package from the US).

Vehicles:
T55A, T55AM1 and T55AM2
PT76
ZU23
Urals
Also, Slatts from the C85 mod has kindly donated the Fiat6614 and the M151 to my mod.

Air:
UH1 – ported from Arma2
L-410T

Future Plans:
Nogovan Policie
Nogovan Quarry/Oil or Gas company vehicles - similar to what released was by Mapfact back with OFP.
Kolgujev Militia to be communist backed enemy.

I remember following Nogovan Armed Forces since ArmA 2 days, it's a blast to see you continue your work. One feedback I have to give is the darker variant of the uniform as shown in the first post.

It feels far too dark, making it feel out of place with the rest of the gear. If perhaps the darker camo variant had it's gears contrast lowered to match the colour I think that would work. I love the idea of NAF and continuing the project, albeit I was never the biggest fan of the camouflage.

Nevertheless, I hope you continue working on it! Love seeing fictional/lore stuff for arma 3 popping out.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a few variants of the camouflage now, some darker and lighter variants that fit well with the Nogova terrain. The actual camouflage is based on camo that Edge (Ivan Butcha) created for his OFP Resistance fighters. I may add some other camouflage in the future.
