FSPilot 0 Posted January 28, 2003 Well, the president is a longhorn fan. That's an airplane made for a microsoft flight sim. *ahem* the real air force one is essentially a civilian 747 filled with communications and other types of equipment. it can refuel in midair so it, technically, has unlimited range. there are actually two air force ones, one serves as a backup. http://www.af.mil/news/factsheets/VC_25A___Air_Force_One.html
shadow 6 Posted January 28, 2003 *ahem* I thought any aircraft was 'Air Force One' as long and the US president was aboard. Atleast that's the impression I got from the movie (w/Harrison Ford) and a documentary on Discovery

When Nixon was being flown to Chicago I think after he resigned, it was Air Force One until Ford was sworn in. The pilot immediately radioed ATC to announce that they were now switching to their non-Air Force One call sign, 27000 I think. Anyway here ya go: Air Force One

Any aircraft with the president onboard is known as Air force One. After he is off i believe it goes back to its regular call sign. not air force one though. I wonder how many they've actually gone through....
PHY_Hawkeye 0 Posted January 29, 2003 Not exactly, the callsign only applies to U.S. Air Force aircraft. When the president is travelling in the presidential helo, it's callsign is 'Marine One'. Is it really protected against EMP or is that just something made up for the movies?

Die Alive 0 Posted January 29, 2003 But in Independance Day (ID4), at the end when the President is flying (FA-18s i think) he's goes by the squadron call sign and not as Air Force One. How can Hollywood lie to us like that! -=Die Alive-
Tovarish 0 Posted January 29, 2003 lol. That movie was also a perfect example of military overspending. I mean, if F-18's can put up a fight against the fighters of an incredibly advanced alien species, why the hell develop new ones?

I mean, if F-18's can put up a fight against the fighters of an incredibly advanced alien species, why the hell develop new ones?<span id='postcolor'> yeah and the fact that there were more F-18's in that movie than there are aircraft in the world! lol there were like a billion of them!!!! anyhow, back on topic... yes any fixed-wing aircraft carrying the president has the callsign "Air Force One" and any helicopter carrying him is known as "Marine One". i wonder if there's a "Navy One" too? heheh.the plane itself is also referred to as Air Force One, simply because it's the president's plane and it's not like some other aircraft is gonna steal its name. ive been on Air Force One, and i must say it's UNBELIEVABLE. the president's personal office on there is extremely nice, with a large leather chair, carpet with the presidential seal on it, a large desk, plenty of sitting room, and there was even a cd rack in there to hold all his tunes there were also NICE bathrooms complete with showers, full sinks, and cabinets. he also had a bedroom with a large king size bed. i cant even describe everything it was just the most amazing thing ive ever been on. it was like being in a mansion, i couldnt even tell i was on an airplane. for those of you who have seen the movie "Air Force One" with Harrison Ford, the interior is almost exactly like it looked in the movie--VERY luxurious i must say. A bunch of neanderthal level humans beat an entire planet of advanced aliens after spending about 1 week in a flight sim, with jets that have been sitting around in hangars gathering dust for hundreds of years. But then again, the humans had LEVERAGE on their side! Who said it was scientologist propoganda! Â Â
FSPilot 0 Posted January 29, 2003 I've been on air force two (the one for the vice president). I lost all the matchbooks they gave us.
Frizbee 0 Posted January 29, 2003 Okay, how does this work. Airforce One is the Presidential Aircraft. I understand that. Marine One is the Presidential helicopter. The Sikorsky UH-60. I get that part too. Airforce Two is the Vice Presidential Aircraft? Then why are Marine Two and Marine Three, the escort aircraft assigned to provide back-up and standby evac for Marine One in case of an emergency or technical failure?
