Independence lost release date

Recommended Posts

I think I have some quasi realistic info on this.

I had a conversation with someone at some point...let's call him...Mr. Black (obscure Simpson's reference there).

Please bare in mind that this was almost a year ago I heard this...plans may have changed...money may have intruded into the equation..however...

IL was supposed to be a small mini campaign that was supposed to be FREE...it was going to be a kind of marketing tool for the release of OFP2. The idea being..complete the campaign and maybe get a glimpse of what OFP2 was going to be about. IL was going to be a way of showing what was capable in OFP as far as new units and also as a "filler" until the release of OFP2.

Now all this was before O2 was released and at that time there wasn't talk of Resistance....so things may have drastically changed.

OFP2 is going to be a new engine....I'm sure much of it will be based on the pioneering techniques made in OFP1 but it will be a new engine which will not support OFP1 addons I don't think. However...I wouldn't throw out those models and textures just yet...I'm sure...given the success of the addon community so far we will be given the appropriate tools straight of the bat to perhaps recompile our addons with a little effort into OFP2 addons.

I may have just added fuel to the rumour fire here....but I did have these conversations with a credible source. How relevant all this is now I'm not sure.

I can guarantee though, that OFP2 will be a totally rewritten engine...and as such...I doubt it will be backwards compatible with addons.

It would be like buying a Ferrari but making sure it has the capability to put a Toyota Corolla engine in it.

Umm, coupla things stand out in my mind.

)It IS the first quarter of 2003 as we type,

)Fame? recognition? you mean you didn't get into modmaking because nobody was making something you wanted?

<anybody making mods to be famous has missed the boat>

As far as there being no worthwhile information in the thread,

sorry Adoy, but I'll make my own mind up on that, now go control someone else's life.

No backward compatability? hmm BIS form an alliance with a harddrive company? biggrin.gif

Look at the plus side though...with a rewritten engine they can fix bugs like the swimming bug, new provisions for proxies, more than one weapon firing in a helo, the loading cargo in helo bug, a gunner/bombadier in a fighter jet.

The possibilities of a new engine makes things exciting....even if we can't use existing addons mod makers and addon makers will be inspired by the new capabilities of the engine to not only recompile their addons but also enhance them to exploit the new engine functionality.

What can be wrong with that? Personally...I'd be willing to sacrifice backward compatibility for significant engine enhancments.

Yep I agree with Tigershark, as long as we get the same support as we did with OFP than for better we should always change, even when sometimes it as some downsides.

i agree 10000%.. biggrin.gif

As long as new exciting things get implemented.. well i frankly couldnt care less about the current addons.. each game needs models so they can be converted i think.. .. but then again... whats the point of "old" models in a brand new game??  wink.gif

Well, what I would hope for is for BIS and CM to let the addon and mod making community in on what's going to be.

If addons will NOT be upward compatible, this takes the wind out of the sails of many an addon maker right now. Even the rumor of it does. Why work hard on something that's useless tomorrow.

This is a mature community, both in the amount of time the game has been out and the sincerity shown by those of you who have spent ages just to get a single addon released.

It would be considerate if BIS would at least tell us now:

1. Whether existing addons are useable or not in OFP2 or whatever you want to call it.

2. How, if possible, can new addons be started on and exisiting ones modified to meet any such new requirements.

Heh, a C130

if the addons wont be directly backwards compatable but maybe they have it were after a little bit of editing you can get it in the game w/out having to completely redo the addon.(if IL/ofp2 is still under developement)

It's kind of funny how we totally dig up these tiny, tiny little clues in lieu of an official announcement. But, they keep us satiated, don't they? smile.gif

Its a security blanket. If we didn't have all this "news" and rumors, we'd all start freaking out and possibly cause harm to family pets.

On topic though, speculation leads to dissappointation (yes i know, just making it rhyme) So i say, whatever happens, happens. If nothing is compatible with the next, who cares? Does that mean you should stop your work? Shit no. If everyone just dropped all this, concentrated on making the best out of what we have now, IL and/or OFP2 would be here before we know it. simple minds are easily entertained. a watched marijuana joint never gets rendered useless(boils)

back on topic.

as the above phrase suggests, i'd like to ask for patience. i'm as eager as other OFP fans about future products, but guessing too much won't help either.

I pray that people may listen to you, if only slightly. Reading all this gets me all tingly, even though i know deep down its all only speculation. As i said before, if BIS simply posted "yes" i would be MORE then satisfied. And with that, i wouldn't even bother asking for a release date (although i knoe everyone else will) Just the simple fact of acknowledgment would do me good. I know they have/do/will read this. For the most part, i'm willing to bet they sit back and laugh. crazy.gif Although, if i were in their position, i would also. tounge.gif

All I would like to have BIS tell the addon community is:

1. Will their addons generally work in Independence Lost?

2. Is their an "OFP2" in the making and, if so, will their addons generally work there.

These are questions that will simply remove the doubt lingering as to whether it's worth people's major time and effort to continue developing addons at this point of OFP's product cycle.

The doubt itself is damaging. There are no big secrets being given away by BIS answering the above questions.

See, personally i see that as too much to ask. I doubt they would announce such a thing this early. (i'm assuming its early because they still work on the original OFP somewhat) It would be great to hear "Yes, we are working on OFP2 right now", but its not going to happen, and you should face it that it isn't, or at least i doubt it. The most i see being "spilt" about is IL at this point. Like i said, leave the subject be for the most part. A little idle conversation is fine, but sitting there saying "Tell us if OFP2 is being made" surely isn't going to help. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. *cough* Ok, thats the best analogy i could come up with. But what i mean is, telling them to tell us isn't going to get them to. Let them do it on there own terms. I'm sure we will get more from waiting then by asking. Thats just my opinion.

Just my off topic opinion - I installed Ghost recon - played the first mission and got rid of it, bollocks to it!
