Nope, there isn't smile.gif

Once a decision in that regard has been made, the community will be notified without a doubt smile.gif

To stop further speculation/complaining/spamming/etc., I will now close this thread.

Future threads asking about Linux will be closed as well, as will other 1.85 threads smile.gif

Having some problems with the linux server (also with V1.85 with wine)!

When using an admin pass in the config file (same as used with V1.75 server), I cannot see my maps when I logged in as admin and use #missions to choose one.

The same also happens when using the server under Windows XP.

If no config is given (only ./server), I see the missions and can choose.

It's a bug or some misconfiguration? Game updated to V1.85 and whole directory used for server.

Shadow posted on how to fix this in another thread, I just wanna know does it work? I mean does it still desync people like crazy as normal windows server from what I hear is a nightmare compared to 1.75 which apparently worked better.

Question: Does OFP 1.85b Linux fix these problems or is it the same issues?

hmm... no editing.

Here is my config:

What a "inux" server: to get it to work you have to have a WINDOWS installation of ofp. That's not really the kind of LINUX server i've been waiting for.... i can really see the linux gamehosters buying ofp and resistance and installing winex and vnc to be able to install this... NOT. Or does BIS expect the users to upload 2gb (size of my ofp folder right now) via ftp to the gamehosters if they want to run a gameserver for the community? In every other game i know of (being a gameserver admin for some years) you can just download the linux server without buying anything and without needing a windows installation of anything and run it. It's kind of insulting to charge the admins, who spend their time and money (i pay for the gameserver i offer to the community) on providing servers which keep the community alive, by requiring them to buy the games (and have a windows installation to install it).

I'm compiling winex right now so i can actually INSTALL the linux server (luckily it's a test server right next room). I have rented a linux server to host ofp, but i'm not sure i want to upload those 2gb or drive several hundreds km to the provider and ask them if i can connect an external cdrom drive to the rack-mounted servers and insert a cdrom or two to install the game.

I mean, i'm really happy bis made a linux server at all. And i can see that it's not the nicest way to say "thank you" by flaming the server the minute it's offered, so i just say thank you one more time and hope i don't sound to harsh.

But i don't think this server will do the mp much good. How do you do patching? Upload those 2GB again after you ran the patch on a windows machine? Use winex with vnc? Complicated scripts with timestamping or checksums? Or will the future patches have a linux server patch, too? Why is there no "complete" linux server with all the data the server and WITHOUT all the data it doesn't need (most graphics stuff, textures and such)? How many providers would let you do this installation procedure (most allow only ftp and no shell account... maybe a web interface for some functionality)? If the linux server requires you to buy the game and have a windows installation to patch/install it you can just use the windows server right away.

Almost ALL games require the original game to be uploaded to Linux... or atleast the major data files (ie pak files for quake).

This is NOT something to complain about... IMO.

I am glad Linux Version has finally been released. (now all we need is sockets VON) smile.gif

If you already hosted OFP-Servers, you already HAVE several Win-Servers standing NEXT TO the Linux-Servers!

So for me it's absolutely okay to move some GB's across the Network between my Servers...

I'm glad that there finally IS a Linux-Version of OFP, it's a major step to get rid of this crappy Windows-Stuff and fully migrating to Linux, setting OFP-Linux up right now to test it....

A big THANX to BI for giving the community what it needed the most!

Can I delete some files before uploading, like SP-Missions, the campaigns, etc.?

This is a list of files which I think that might be deleted:

Campaings\* (68 megs)

Missions\* (also some dozens of megs)

Templates\* (~7megs)

Users\* (varies)

Res\Campaigns\* (about 60megs)

Because they are SP-only the MP-dedi should not need them but maybe it checks whether they exist or something like that. So does anybody know, whether I can delete them or not? It is not very much compared to the 1gig+ of data which I need to transfer anyway but I only have isdn at home so it is really usefull for me to decrease the size as much as possible.

Sorry, my gamehoster has not a single windows machine. And i think that's the case for most linux gamehosting services. If you host from your home via a big line that may not bother you, but for server hosters this means an extra server, cost for os and cost for renting server space at an isp.

I have a winex/vnc installation under linux. And i really haven't waited for a "linux" server to have to use winex again...

I just made myself a tarfile-"patch" from 1.75 to 1.85 on my local system which contains all the changed files (hope i got them all). It's around 280mb. If installing the windows patch with winex doesn't work i have to upload those 280mb of changed files.

That's not really the "linux server" i expected, but it's better than not having a linux server at all and i am thankful for it.

But i'm pretty sure in it's current form it's more fit for students running it on university servers than for professional commercial hosters. And i'd like to see more and better commercial hosters, more servers and more popularity for ofp...

FragHaus is currently running a Linux Stress test on 64.89.15.26:2302. If anyone wishes to join to test out Linux performance feel free.

Relax, guys. Sooner or later someone is going to ZIP or TAR up the needed files so that you won't have to have a Windows box to create the LINUX server. All you'll have to do is add your own mission files and server configuration file, and you'll be set.

How's the linux servers running? Any better than the windows ones? I hear MP is much laggier in 1.85? Think I'm gonna hold off installing 1.85 until the dust settles. Hard to do though , want to see all the nice stuff BIS added and fixed. =)

The Finnish Platoon is now testing the linux dedicated server with a much weaker machine than normally, an amd k6-2 400 with 256mb memory, running Debian 3.0 ..

Feel free to join up, IP 195.197.36.146:2302 (sockets)

for what it's worth.

Well. We don't expect you to install 2 gigs. You may just use fresh OpFlash installation (less than 1.2 gigs with Resistance installed) plus you don't need any sp missions and campaings on the server for sure. If someone has time to play with it, there are maybe some more files that are not required. The server simply needs most of OpFlash data files and there's no other reliable way how to distribute it because the server code would have easily over 400 megs. We provided you with the Linux server beta because we felt it will be welcome. But if you don't like it or don't like the way how it's done, I can't recommend anything else than just staying with Windows version. But as a matter of fact, the installation of standalone server for Win is exactly the same thing.

The initial response is that "it works".. this evening if the games work bearably on that 400mhz box, then I'm changing the OS for the actual server.

Finally. :)

Actually, in both postings i said i really LIKE there being a linux server at last. I just wanted to point out why a linux server which doesn't need windows for installation would be a BETTER thing. Just making a tar wih all the files for setting up a linux server but without all the UNNECESSARY files (sp, campaigns, the graphic parts the server doesn't need) would IMPROVE the linux server (like in constructive criticism). It's not that it's all bad, but uploading 1.2GB to a gamehoster takes about how long? Like 20 hours with my 128kbit upload? And if i can't upload it then my gamehoster has install it, which means he must buy the original game, buy a windows os, a computer to run windows on, etc, ie he won't do it. My gamehoster is linux-only, as are most gamehosters i know of. Actually, i only know of one gamehoster using windows machines here...

It's great that we have a linux server, i guess i just have to get through uploading it for 20h, but a nice linux-only server which i could download directly from the web to my gamehoster (via his line, not my slow one at home) would have been better...

And it seems to be working fine so far... These files are 271MB in size, not a very big pack... You need to add any unofficial addons of course and mpmissions.
