Russia General

Recommended Posts

To avoid creating a thread for each of the Russian related news, I decided to create this one to gather them. Please focus on posting news and commenting them in a civil and polite manner.

First:

RIA Novosti is dead, long live to Sputnik News

As RIA Novosti, one of the Kremlin owned news agency, was too professional and neutral giving information the Kremlin decided to make it disappear, and create another RT like propaganda source ( which BTW is also property of the Kremlin so makes no sense IMO to keep creating propaganda sources... ): Sputnik News.

( Mashable ) Russia intensifies propaganda war by launching global news agency Sputnik

( Vocativ ) The Schizophrenia of Sputnik, the “BuzzFeed of Russian Propagandaâ€

( RT ) Sputnik launched to news orbit: Russia’s new intl media to offer alternative standpoint ( then what was the reason to create RT a few years ago? )

( NY Times ) Russian News Agency Expands Global Reach

It is a familiar rallying cry as the Kremlin aggressively expands its voice in the Western media, most notably through RT, formerly Russia Today, the television station that serves up bad news about Russia’s enemies and good news about its allies.

Now there is also Sputnik: a network of news hubs in 34 countries with over 1,000 staff members producing radio, social media and news wire content in local languages paid for by Russia. Sputnik is part of the RIA Novosti news agency, which Mr. Kiselyov heads.

(The Australian) Russians warships headed for Australia, Putin bound for G20

RUSSIAN warships are north of Australian waters in an unprecedented show of strength to accompany Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the G20 in Brisbane this weekend.

Australian P3 Orion surveillance aircraft have been deployed to monitor the ships, along with Anzac class frigate, HMAS Stuart.

The ships are in the Coral Sea, south of Bougainville off Australia’s east coast.

before someone takes the media slogans too serious ...its also reported in @surphers link.

Defence downplays Russian fleet spotted north of Australia

Defence Force chief Mark Binskin has downplayed the strength of a Russian naval fleet north of Australia ahead of the G20 leaders' summit in Brisbane.

Asked why Russia was sending four ships to the international summit instead of the usual one or two, he indicated they weren't all warships.

Russia had publicised its intent to deploy a task force to the South Pacific a while ago, and an ocean-going tug and an oiler are part of that group.

"So it's just one part of their operations. They're in international waters. They're allowed to do that. And we'll continue to surveil them," he said.

It's not the first time Russian naval vessels have been present while an international summit is on.

(Reuters) Dutch fighters intercept Russian plane over Baltic states

Two Dutch F16 fighter jets, part of a NATO force patrolling the skies above the Baltic states, intercepted a Russian Ilyushin transport aircraft after it intruded into Estonian and Lithuanian air space, the Dutch government said on Thursday.
On Thursday the defense ministers of Britain, the three Baltic states and four Nordic countries - NATO members Norway and Denmark and neutral Finland and Sweden - agreed to step up cooperation on intelligence and air force training to counter Moscow's increased activity in northern Europe.

It seems this was a false report. Did the Reuters report change their title and content from the same link ?

Dutch fighters intercept Russian plane over Baltic Sea

The Dutch defence ministry said in a statement the Ilyushin had been flying in international air space but had been intercepted when it approached the air space of the two countries without filing a flight plan.

It said the plane did not intrude into their air space as an earlier ministry statement had said.

The exclave of Kaliningrad is sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania, both NATO members as are the other two Baltic states Estonia and Latvia.

The Western military alliance has recently reported increased levels of Russian military activity in the skies above the Baltic Sea. Last month, Norway scrambled F-16s to track four Russian bombers.

(The Local) 'Conclusive proof' of foreign vessel in Sweden

Speaking at a packed press conference on Friday, Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces Sverker Göransson revealed that a foreign vessel was in Stockholm's archipelago in October, but said the Swedish military had been unable to determine what country it came from.

(The Swedish Armed Forces) Confirmed submarine in the Stockholm archipelago

There is no doubt, we have excluded all other explanations. Swedish territory has been seriously and unacceptably violated by a foreign power, says Supreme Commander Sverker Göranson.

Maybe the Russian Navy has been testing that submarine in the Baltic...

( Sputnik News ) New Stealth Submarine to Join Russian Navy by End of Year: Defense Ministry

"The newest diesel-electric submarine Rostov-on-Don will complete trials and be in service by the end of 2014," said Igor Dygalo, an official representative of the Defense Ministry press and information service.

Putin gets very cold shoulder in Brisbane G20 summit. The least welcomed participant of the G20 summit.

First thing. No people at the airport besides Russian ambassador and Australian vice minister of defense.

BBC - Russia plans 'alternative Wikipedia'

A statement said the initiative aimed to provide better information about Russia than is available on Wikipedia.

Analysis had shown that Wikipedia "does not have enough detailed and reliable information about Russian regions and the life of the country", it said.

The move comes amid increasing Kremlin control of the web.

In August, laws were enacted forcing bloggers with more than 3,000 daily readers to register with the mass media regulator.

And in March, websites run by opponents and critics of President Vladimir Putin were blocked.

He also had his very own table when they went to eat something. Nobody wanted to sit with him.

Alternative Wikipedia..... I guess it will be just the same as Putins alternative history books.....

BBC - Georgians protest against Russia-Abkhazia agreement

The deal would create joint Russian and Abkhazian military forces.

Abkhazia declared independence in 1999 following a separatist war. In 2008, Russia formally recognised the province's autonomy.

Demonstrators, who believe Russia is taking steps to annex Abkhazia, carried Georgian and EU flags and chanted "stop Russia" and "stop Putin".

Others waved Ukraine flags, a reminder of Russia's decision to takeover Crimea and support separatist rebels in Ukraine's east.

"We have to raise our voice by saying that today, together with Ukraine, Russia is annexing Abkhazia and South Ossetia," said Georgian MP David Bakradze.

"And our international partners, the whole world has to defend international law here in Georgia, not only in Ukraine."

The problem with Wikipedia is that government can't easily censor parts of it like articles about drugs and other plots of western bourgeoisie. Now repeat after me; "Ignorance Is Strength", "Ignorance Is Strength", ...

Who is buried in a quickly prepared grave site in Rostov? Most of these people had 25-35 years, young and able men mostly.

Just what this forum needed?

If you mean the thread, IMHO is better to gather all posts about Russia in one thread than have dozens. Same happens with Libya, Iraq, Ukraine and A-Stan.
