It should work, but considering windows 8 disables this on a full screen app launch or program launch it will (or should not have) any discernible difference to players with Windows
chrisb 196 Posted September 26, 2013 This is an old trick, especially if you are running on older hardware 3-5 years old and running vista or windows 7. It should work, snip.. True, what the OP said is good advice, it certainly will help. When looking for a good gaming experience you need a gaming pc, doesn't have to be the top end, provided when you get it (preferably new ‘all parts’), you start behaving as you mean to go on, keeping it lean and clean. So many players have soo much running when trying to play, all that makes a difference, don’t be tempted to put stuff on there, keep it as a gaming pc solely. It will give you a much better experience. Ah I’ve heard it all before, you shout, but, I’m running A3 on my A2 pc. I ran A2 very high with a set 2000vd on the ground and anything I liked in the air, depending on air battle going on. Every setting was on High or Very High, the ones I use, not PP don't like the effect, or vsync always off. I now have A3 running on that pc, although I have a pc waiting for it (not sure if I'll bother putting it on yet), and it runs great, more or less all ultra settings (didn't need my new machine really:(), again the settings I like, not PP, v-sync, or PIP, but the rest other than sticking to a lower vd, 1200-1500 on the ground and no more than 6000 in the air. There are lots of videos to see in my YT, some fps tests etc. And the pc! a Athlon 640 quad with a hd5850 2gb card, beats this series into the ground other than vd, its not hard to do, its just got to be lean and clean, but from new preferably.. Take the advice of the OP, look through your running processes (task man) and turn off what your not using, because when you hit that internet connection they all jump on wanting to update, while your trying to play your game. Also as he says, turn Win effects off or down, they are not needed for gaming, make a ’user’ name and have that for your gaming, have it run on basic settings. Anti spyware can be a problem when online or SP, it will be checking for connection quite often to update, several times a day in most cases if your AV is any good, same with windows, update at a time you want, not auto update, once a week update is fine for most applications other than AV, which you can update at the end of the day. Don’t game with all this rubbish running….. In-fact, don't game with anything other than what's needed to run the games your playing, everything else 'Bin'. Good advice @Henri, oh and welcome..:) Carry on ;):p:)

St. Jimmy 272 Posted September 26, 2013 Holy cow I changed my theme back to windows basic again today and my fps really rose 10 fps on the menu. I was wondering what caused this but seems like it was the aero.
t4nk83 10 Posted September 26, 2013 windows 8 has no aero That sir is a common misconception. Aero was more than just the glass feel and 3d flip of Aista and 7. Aero is the technology that allows the operating system to use hardware acceleration to improve rendering of the active windows... http://www.howtogeek.com/128819/aero-isnt-gone-in-windows-8-6-aero-features-you-can-still-use/
giorgygr 61 Posted September 26, 2013 Although the background processes tweaking-trick is rather old..i thought modern Anti-viruses (including free-ones) had architecture that recognizes you are running a System-resources-hungry application (i.e. Gaming)..and tweaking themselves positively for user. If this is not true..i 'll for sure consider turning that crap off to save some performance for my old system..
chrisb 196 Posted September 26, 2013 If your on-line gaming you can’t turn your Anit Virus off, no one is saying that. However you can regulate with many programs, how and when to update, be it at a certain time, or a day or via manually doing it. Anti virus will need to be running when your online, full stop, for me anyway. But I have it set to manual update. Look it’s a case of lean and clean, if there are processes running that you don’t need, switch them off. We are all fairly confident we need protection when online, so leave your protection running, but set it up to do things when you want, not when ‘it’ wants. Windows is behind your game, leave it on basic, it will do no harm, if you like the cool look of normal windows when your not gaming do what I do, switch them back on.. Any programs that you don’t use or haven’t for some time and can’t see yourself using much again, get rid of. I know of very few things that don’t want to update, sell you something, or just pester you with crap offers, to top that, it all comes down the line at you when your trying to get a decent performance from your pc for gaming. This is an old argument, I've had it on here before, "oh modern pc can handle it", etc. Well news is, everything has an affect, be it very small or larger. The more you have the larger the affect, not rocket science by any means. Plus you'll be surprised what attaches itself to some of these simple program downloads, don't accept anything you don't want, breezing through the install and not reading as you go along is a recipe for disaster, it will put on all sorts if your not careful, you either have to un-mark it, or say no, read as you go through if you must download rubbish. :p;)

henri 10 Posted October 21, 2013 Since Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead build 85869 (1.60 beta) it is possible to provide custom memory allocators for the game. The memory allocator is a very important component, which significantly affects both performance an stability of the game. The purpose of this customization is to allow the allocator to be developed independently on the application, allowing both Bohemia Interactive and community to fix bugs and improve performance without having to modify the core game files. http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/ArmA_2:_Custom_Memory_Allocator did anyone play around with these? fred41 42 Posted October 21, 2013 (edited) ... yes, i did: https://github.com/fred41/ASM/tree/master/tbbmalloc It works ONLY with 64bit OS with 8GB+ RAM and you have to set a user privileg (see tbbmalloc.txt), running arma3 as admin. The result is ~5% more FPS on client (depends on settings), what is much less than expected. I think there is much more potential in arma's (thread) synchronisation, but this can only be improved by BIS developers. henri 10 Posted December 11, 2013 reboot pc with no crap in the background (especially no real time virus scanning)start game - So after my original post it would seem it has come to light that there is an issue with the ESET virus scanner and ARMA3 Last week we mentioned compatibility issues between BattlEye and real-time ESET scanners. The latter partner has begun targeting this on their end, and they have a solution which they are testing. Future updates to their software should therefore work with the anti-cheat technology much smoother- I'd like to point out that it is not just ESET that causes an issue. Maybe battlEye is not a good solution? @fred; could not get that memalloc to work. where is that dedi server exe?!

henri 10 Posted December 11, 2013 another thing that might help is turning off cool and quiet if your mb has that THEN unpark your cores and max for performance using the amd overclock thingy lol turn off your virus scanner AND switch off Aero.

Chippy 10 Posted December 12, 2013 Got the same errors on multiplayer with high end hardware. 80+ fps on SP and less then 20 fps in MP with stucks every second. If you are running any antivirus software as eset nod antivir kaspersky or else, disable the monitoring of your RAM in the AV-Software. This helped me getting 80+ fps on Multiplayer.
