fred41 42 Posted January 5, 2014 ... thanks for your feedback and logs ... @NoPOW, your logs are still a good example for full large page availability and best allocation timings. @NumRollen, there is a new version available (with some improvements). @Kremator, i think you don't really need to run this tool for your system. It is mainly for this systems, where fallbacks to 'single pages' occures early, even if more than enough phys. RAM is installed (fragmentation). But it does'nt hurt to use it, because it could help to delay normal fragmentation a bit too. @ Bono_LV, your log file looks perfect. Improvement of 9% for a flyover-benchmark is a very good result. Dwarden 1125 Posted January 5, 2014 well i'm not sure on the VM server i sorted the SP falling back to LP issue by doubling the swap size from 16GB to 32 GB ... (no idea why that works as it has 16GB RAM) and the server on direct metal with 32GB never had isses with LP cleaning affects the speed of allocs , no need for restart etc. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

If I 'empty' the ram before running arma with the custom memalloc I still get a lot of failed-fallback errors in the log. I have to run after a fresh boot to see a clean run. I have noticed that when I use Rammap to look at what-is-where in the memory, it is a little bit of everything everywhere. Even shortly after a fresh boot. (CCC for ATI drivers, chrome, svchost, windows system DLL and other system files, audioDG.exe and other vital system processes) With that said, I notice no real-world performance difference between running A3+malloc after a fresh boot or if my system is up for several days and I get all those failed-fallback errors. I am tuning my system always, by adapting my settings, so that i can get an average of ~70FPS in helos A3 Altis benchmark. This way i have mostly stable 50FPS in multiplayer sessions (vsync on). My current system has 32GB of ram, I had run with 16GB while I RMA'd one of the 2x8GB paired sticks that had been unstable at times, but this was many months ago back when A3 just entered the public alpha. I have been running arma 3 pretty similar to how I run arma 2. Since the usual minimum framerate is around 30fps, I adjust my settings so it doesn't get much above that. Running High textures seems to almost completely get rid of the chance of the vmem dump and in A3 I run around a 3k view distance. The only real option to reduce the chances of the vmem dump I was seeing is to reduce textures to High. But along with texture detail and view distance and how they play with each other that can make viewing certain objects less than optimal for a game play perspective (i.e. not being able to see an enemy in a building from a couple hundred meters because it turns into a blurry wall with no windows, or soldiers becoming very difficult to ID). I think it is worth a look/try, even if you have 32GB RAM. Related to the VRAM flush symptom, there was a short discussion about, a few weeks ago in this thread (started with post #58). This issue is still existing, but this is a problem outside of custom memory allocators scope/domain. Apart from this, there must be a source/reason for this heavy memory fragmentation on your system. Please try the following settings (just to exclude arma itself as a possible source): ViewConditions: 1600/1105/100 Textures: high Object: standard Terrain: standard Shadow: high Clouds: low PIP: deactivated I know this settings will not look very nice, but it would be interesting to see, if you run with this settings on a fresh started system, if there are still fallbacks to 'SP' in your log? I will try to interpreting your logs: 1. enabling the paging file on your system, significantly improves the availability of 'large pages' and avoids/delays fragmentation of physical RAM 2. we can now exclude arma (even with higher settings) as source of phys. memory fragmentation 3. even if we didn't found the source of fragmentation on your system, we now have a solution to prevent such fragmentations Conclusion: Use a pagefile (and/or adapt the size) if you have fragmentation symptoms, to increase the availability of large pages (at least on windows 7) Thank you and thanks to dwarden again, you helped yourself out and other peoples with similar fragmentation symptoms too :) Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

The page file was not touched once while running arma, and I have been monitoring the drive the page file is on for 47 hours of uptime now, and not 1 single bit has been written to the page file. I can completely understand how having less physical ram (say 4GB or even 8GB) makes having a virtual memory pagefile very important and vital to having your system be able to even run, but I would suspect that anyone with 16GB+ with no major memory hogs running will not be using any virtual memory. In Dwardens case, as he mentioned, it was a VM environment so that is probably a unique situation which applies to servers. Here is a log from a run I just did. 47 hours uptime, virtual memory enabled (32GB), High textures. The page file on the hard drive still has not been touched. THe only solution I see is to reboot before running A3 with the custom allocator. But, the performacne appears to be the same. When I run Benchmark Altis to get an average framerate or run a FPS log with MSI afterburner or fraps the difference in average and minimum framerates is always within about 1-2 FPS, so no significant performance increase for me whether I reboot or not. However, the game may be ever so slightly smoother after a fresh reboot compared to when my system has been running for a week. Hm. Can you help me understand how the pagefile helps in this case? I'm not seeing a difference between the logs with and wtihout the pagefile after a fresh reboot. For example, looking at the logs from the Memory Benchmark mission after the reboot; http://pastebin.com/0cSL3jYV and with virtual memory enabled; http://pastebin.com/UD5W8WQt, I see no major differences. They are almost exactly the same line for line. It is not until the MFCA req at line 43 that the left column differs significantly, but that can be explained as how long I took to hit Play for the mission. There are a few differences in the ammount being allocated further down in the logs, but they are being allocated at different addresses which could have had other data round them, so some ares a 16kb block or a 14366k block differ, but are all very close to each other in the overall time stamp. What I am getting at, is I see no evidence to say having virtual memory enabled benefits the arma exe in any way shape or form when there is plenty of physical ram available after a fresh boot and after the system has been running for a while. First, your 3 last logs are recorded with swapfile on, right (you forgot to tell us how many GB)? This 3 logs are looking very good and one should assume, that this pagefile should solve your problem? Ok, a bit more detailed now. You probably know, that using large pages results in higher memory access speed (higher TLB efficiency). To use this advantage, 'tbbmalloc for arma' at first tries to allocate memory using large pages (VirtualAlloc with MEM_LARGE_PAGES flag). Only if this allocation attempt fails, allocator is forced to fallback to small pages (second allocation attempt). So if you see a fallback in your log, this just means, there are not enough CONTINOUS 2MB blocks in PHYSICAL memory available. Try to realize, that one single small page (4kB), inside a memory region of 2MB (512x4kB) can make the whole block unusable as large page!!!! It is important to understand this and to keep this in mind. Even if you have 512GB of physical RAM, it is very easy to make the whole memory unusable as large pages, by allocating each 512th small page (worst case of fragmentation). Do you still follow? Ok :) So it only depends of your OS memory manager, how clever it handles memory allocation (mapping) in phys. RAM, to prevent fragmentation and provide a maximum large pages. It seems, that the existence of a disk based paging file, makes memory managers life easier (at least yours and Dwardens observations seems to confirm this). Your interpretation of the log file colums are fully correct. Please realize, that each line in this logs, contains a memory region allocation (custom allocator requests RAM from OS). What you not see in the log, are upto MILLIONS of very small allocations PER FRAME, from arma to custom memory allocator. So, you can imagine custom memory allocator as an 'memory distributor'. It allocates (large) regions from OS memory pool and provides it as small pieces to arma. (such a memory distributor is called 'heap') Enough now :) If there are still questions left or new ones occure, please feel free to ask. The virtual memory on my system is simply not being used at all which is leading to it becoming heavily fragmented which then leads to SPs and fallbacks in the log when larger blocks are trying to be created. That is evident in my last post with the log I ran. Don't all these SP and fallbacks defeat the purpose of the custom memory allocator? I thought the goal was to have LPs. I'll plan to reboot tonight with a smaller virtual memory size, say 4GB, and see if that makes any difference. I think at this point the only way to force some virtual memory usage would be to either run a ramdisk that takes up almost all my RAM, or physically remove a couple sticks of ram and running 16GB and making sure I have some programs open so the pagefile on disk gets used. Kind of ironic how I put a lot of ram in this system so I'd never have to deal with any memory issues and it is now creating them.:rolleyes: I guess 32GB of ram is too much. I think it might be worth me starting another topic to investigate this further since it has little to do with a custom memory allocator for arma. naught 6 Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) So I've followed this thread for the past few days, and what I've been working on for a little while is getting a faster allocator for Arma (there are many more options than TBB, including custom mallocs). I'm especially interesting in the Lockless malloc, due to its performance, and I've also seen many good things about the newer revisions of jemalloc and tcmalloc, which are significantly faster than the ones which are currently included with Arma. Problem is, compiling any of the above three for 32bit Windows programs is nearly impossible on my current software bed (especially Lockless), and it's made even harder with the custom code in it to externalize the RVE C functions. So what I propose is a new method for loading memory allocator DLL's, a basic wrapper DLL which would act as an abstraction layer between the RVE and the native malloc interfaces. This means that we can straight compile the mallocs from unmodified source for 32bit Windows, and then use the wrapper DLL to load the appropriate functions to the RVE with minimal overhead. So if we can get a working wrapper (as proposed below), and someone to compile some of these mallocs for 32bit Windows (with the /LARGEADDRESSAWARE flags, correct optimization and such), we can streamline updates, compiles, and additions of new memory allocators. fred41 42 Posted January 10, 2014 @frag85, look around a bit in this thread and you probably have to agree, that there are some systems with perfect logs (100% LP availability), even with 8GB phys. RAM. Also i still can't reproduce any fallback on my system, even if i have only 8GB phys. RAM installed. If setting a large pagefile still not improve the LP availability on your system, there is perhaps no other way for you, than finding the source of this fragmentation. BTW: The goal of this project is improving performance. Usage of large pages is one of some different ways (see initial post for a list of advantages). @Naught, very nice. Not sure if removing your RAM was sarcastic or not but if you want to test your PC with a lower amount of memory, you can limit it from inside msconfig. Maybe there is a problem with high amounts of RAM as earlier versions of Arma and Arma2 had graphics problems when memory was above 4-6GB in certain systems and limiting it with msconfig was a workaround.
