DVD Version turning into Beta Version ??

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

just got my DVD Version of Arma 3. After installing and starting the Game it says "Arma 3 BETA".

If i got a (final) DVD Version, why does the Steam installation convert it into a Beta Version ?

I know that the official release date of the final version is 12. September, so will it automatically change into the final version on that date ?

Btw: I didn't realize that the game will only run over Steam. Because i hate steam i think although i love OFP and all Arma games i wouldn't have bought it. The problem with my final version turning into a Beta version is just one of the many annoying problems with that crappy steam sh..t.

Yes, Steam will automaticly change it into the release version on 12th September.

You're lucky that it gave you the option the play the Beta, normally Steam won't let you play a game before its release date.

Regarding Steamwork for ArmA 3, that has been announced back in February 2013. It's also writen on the box

Artie,

Couple of questions......

Where did you purchase the DVD from? And did it require automatic update as soon as you started the game?

Hiya, some bits of information about the DVD version:

  • The DVD version should not be on sale / shipped anywhere before September 12th, but as you've shown - it is :yay:
  • Yes, every DVD version runs through Steam as is written on the box.
  • One-time activation and first-time update is mandatory. This is why it's now 'updating' you to Beta, since the full version is not on the Steam servers yet. On September 12th your version will automatically update to the full version.
  • Your DVD's Steam Product Code also determines access to other languages - these may not yet be available before the 12th.
  • Enjoy the game!

Not saying that they're the same guy, but found on Reddit...

... DnA, you're using "It's a Handsome Beast if I Ever Saw One" from RPS as your main 'review quote' on the box? Confirm or deny? :D

"I arbitrarily hate a program that has pros that far outweigh the cons and the 2 times a year my internet access is spotty the offline mode sometimes doesn't work. I hate DRM even though CD keys are DRM and have been in the arma series since ofp2001"

That's the gist of it.

Steam adds: Workshop, Steamworks (inviting your friends through steam therefore getting past the piss poor server browser), Patch management (arma 2 was a nightmare), the list goes on. I could understand the hate if steam was like GFWL where it inherently made the game itself worse. But it really doesn't.

I've yet to see a coherent argument against it. (Before someone starts, offline mode does exist and works most of the time).

hmm steam isn't so bad, i hated it at first because it was just another hurdle for joining games in hl (and when it came out pc's didn't have much ram so any extra processes was a performance loss in most cases), but its not that bad any more, the one and only problem with it i would say is that according to them you don't own anything you buy from there so, if they wanted to, they could shut down and you'd lose access to everything you've bought, although that is highly unlikely considering the market share they have on DD.

good point! Seems like some people, are still sitting in the hole, not crawling out. Using additional program, to play games, was perhaps a nightmare centuries ago, when we were pretty much limited on ram and cpu power, but today (unless you have a toaster but not pc) it's not a problem anymore.

That box looks legit - 'no comment' on the box-quote ;)

Artie,

Couple of questions......

Where did you purchase the DVD from? And did it require automatic update as soon as you started the game?

I ordered the game the normal way at gameware.at. It was delivered today. After starting the setup it said that it was installing from DVD. But after that the Update-Download started, saying that the Beta Version is installed.

To explain my problems with steam:

My fears about steam and others are nearly the same as my fears about online storage / cloud storage. Other people have control over my data and my programs. What if i don't want to update my game ? Steam will force me to do it unless i set it to offline mode. What if they build in some restrictions because some people think some parts are to brutal ? What if my internet connection is broken ? I don't like to play multiplayer missions, i only play singleplayer missions, so i wouldn't need internet. What if i want to install the game again in a few years ? Even steam could get financial problems and get broke. I often play my old Call Of Duty or Medal of honor versions. These are simple to install and do not need to be activated online.

I had some trouble with Steam installations i the way that i had to reinstall some games. On the other hand i have two steam accounts running over the same E-Mail adress. I created the first account years ago and forgot about it. Then i bought a new steam game and created a new account. I don't know why it worked but it worked. Now i read that steam won't let you put together two different accounts. So here you have another restriction with steam.

Your concerns are all valid and I understand your point of view.

There is not much that I can add to that except that Steam is the tool not the force. If a game gets updated/changed after release (e.g. censored) is completely up to the Publisher/Developer

Also if you launche Steam without Internet connect, then it should offer you to launch in Offline mode without login in ( account creditals need to be saved on the pc in order for that to work) .

You can disable automated updates in your steam library for each game individually. Right click on it in the library -> Properties (Eigenschaften) -> Updates

It's not Steam's fault you couldn't remember that you already had an account.

The review quotes on the box of Arma titles always seem to be about the graphics and nothing else. The quote from PC gamer on the front of my CO case is "Visually impeccable", as if that was the only nice thing the reviewer said about it. As if the whole quote was something like "It runs like garbage and I've never cussed anything out so harshly in my life. On the plus side, it's visually impeccable."

if you don't want to play the beta just wait until the 12th. Or did you think that you would be able to play the game before anyone else?

No, but as i wrote i didn't know it would only run with steam. Thats he reason why i ordered the DVD version. I hoped installation would be as with the previous versions of Arma. And when the box arrived i thougt "Hey, what a lucky surprise ! They got ready before the official release date ! Wow !"

@[FRL]Myke: i know that it is not steams fault, that i didn't remember my first account. But why didn't i get a message when creating my second account and why are they an the other hand so restrictive with accounts ?

Ever since the first announcement that Arma 3 is steam exclusive, it was clear that the retail versions will include the installation files and require key activation through steam. If you are not informed about that, there's really nobody to blame except you :/

Yes, of course it's my fault. But that doesn't mean that i have to like the fact that arma 3 runs on steam. The arma series are so great, because they are so open. You can create missions with some clicks, you can get plenty of mods and addons etc. No other game has so much possibilities. And above that the arma series were different in another point: You could use them without steam, origin or uplay. For me it's a little loss of freedom ;-)

Any word on what U.S. Retailers are going to carry ArmA III in stores? I am not seeing any information on where to buy. Of course it's slim pickin's when it comes to PC games in store, now.

Thanks for all you do.
