Ricochets in Arma 3?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I've searched around a bit but couldn't find a definite answer.

Are there ricochets in Arma 3? Do rounds skip off the ground? Do rounds "travel walls" such as indoors rounds hitting a wall and basically following it down the length of the wall?

I gave this a thought the other day after having a firefight with another player inside a building. He was near a corner inside and I could almost see the corner through an open door. In real life you could put rounds at that wall and the angle would take ricochets roughly in the direction of that corner. I just happened to wonder if I should fire some rounds in and try this or if I would just be wasting rounds and giving away my position more than the worth of running rounds down a wall?

Yep, except for "following it down the length of the wall".

Most walls can be penetrated if your gun is big enough, AP rounds go through vehicles and bounce on the terrain,

Try it with some tracer rounds.

So do they ricochet based on the angle of impact?

Yes they do, but according to my tests they are completely incapable of doing any damage after deflecting.

Just load up some tracer rounds, set the time of day to night and fire some rounds into the pavement or something, it's quite a sight to behold :D

That's incorrect. I have killed multiple soldiers on many occasions with ricochets. :)

Really?!

They must have changed things a bit since I last tried it.

At one time, I could stand roughly 30-40ft away and skip an entire magazine into a squad mate's torso and they wouldn't even flinch, lol.

Oh yeah, it works now :y:

They didn't change anything. The ricochets slow down, doing less damage.

Also note that most Altis buildings have walls you can penetrate with 6.8mm, which is a hugely significant for gameplay.

Yep bullets do indeed ricochet, just yesterday I surprised myself when I shot a metal sign I'd placed in the editor and the round bounced down into the pavement.

With further testing I've determined that rounds will ricochet from metal signs about 75% of the time so I don't see how other materials wouldn't behave in a somewhat similar fashion, of course materials such as wood are not likely to cause a ricochet.

Regards Hawk.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Thanks for the diagram.

Has anyone seen diagram like scenarios in Arma 3 play out?

You can also see the ricochets effect if you set up a shooting range with steel targets spread out at variable distances. Sometimes two targets at different angels from the shooter get knocked down by one shot.

Ricochets have been in Arma since OFP1 IIRC.

I know for sure that rounds of every kind do indeed ricochet since Arma 2 and do indeed do damage.

Video I made in the alpha showing lots of Ricochets, most of it was shot before the tracer lighting was improved.

Ricochets have been in for years. Unfortunately, so have magical cannon rounds that explode twice.

Anyone knows if ricochets happen on body armor? Suppose the vest is hit at a shallow angle, will the bullets be deflected and do no damage regardless of how many rounds fired?
