The Almighty Aircraft Thread!

Recommended Posts

So the mods were becoming slightly irate at the dev reveals blog becoming laden with a debate over the Rafale, Typhoon, F-35, and F-22.

With this thread here, we don't need to fill some other game related thread up with our irl plane specs lot! To quote Gliptal, yay!

In my eyes, the Typhoon does serve best as an Air Defence aircraft, so things like interception are right up its alley. I've seen the very forefront of Typhoon design whilst being in the presence of RAF's No. 17 Sqn, which is an OEU Squadron. For those who aren't familiar with the RAF's love of acronyms, that's Operational Evaluation - they get the latest gen and test it all out to see if it should or should not be used in the field. This includes HMD and the likes.

The Eurofighter Typhoon's ability to target BVR is a huge asset but its agility is probably one of its best. The Rafale - I'm not convinced. The Typhoon has greater A-A capabilities and is more maneuverable, with better engines.

The Rafale would probably excel in A-G though. The Typhoon was only just recently brought up to a standard where it was actually useful to have things like GBU's onboard. Nonetheless, it could quite easily switch modes should it be necessary.

The F-35/F-22; I don't know as much about. It's hard to compare the Raptor against the Typhoon, they're just so different, although the F-22 may win over BVR whereas when they were dogfighting the Typhoon may have a better chance. I can't comment on the F-35 really as I haven't seen it in great detail or seen it in use.

I guess weapon ranges and radar ranges would be a factor in deciding who would be top. I hear the F-22 is relatively stealthy and has a good radar, as for the Typhoon, I can't remember the values I know and those I can, I think I'm not allowed to actually say. Rafale I have no idea, neither the F-35. Wiki?

Hooray for the thread!

The Typhoon is waiting for its AESA radar... Funny thing is, once the Tranche 4 will be fully operational, it will have better air to ground possibilities than the F-35 (except stealth of course)...

I guess the problem with the Rafale is it does everything good, but excels in nothing in particular... I also watched both at some airshows, and the Typhoon seems to always pull more Gs with tighter turns than the Rafale, but that might simply be the pilots pushing more or less the aircraft...

As I said in the other thread, the EF-2000 is still a developing jet...

Yay!

Oh indeed. It is annoying how it's development spans across so many countries though (I'm not insulting anyone here, but to change even minor issues you gotta go international)! Over at RAF Coningsby we regularly see issues needing to be resolved but they take a while when the component(s) we need is/are on another island :X

That said, the improvements are very welcome and hopefully as you say, it will only get better.

Only the Rafale and the Eurofighter can be compared here they are direct concurants with a similar architecture:

4th generation

a delta wing

two motors

system duck

digital battlefield

limited radar echo

acquisition device and indenthification multiple targets

more than 10 points each Loadout

etc ...

F-35 fighter is the F-16 in 2020, multirole, it is in my opinion the best choice for ArmA 3, with its VTOL capability is easily deployable and is a 5th generation fighter.

F-22 is a 5th generation fighter too but also here there is more talk of a long-range interceptor action is therefore limited in dogfight, so useless in ArmA 3

Kind of makes me wonder if all these next gen fighters are really worth the effort. We haven't seen a massive air battle since the end of WWII and the premise of stealth is just a buzz word.

All this fancy tech is nice but it's becoming absurdly costly not to mention assembly is a bit ludicrous when you're constantly shipping it parts all over the world, it feels more like various militaries playing a game of who has the shiniest toys.

It feels like a buying a very expensive car, that costs more than your house and leaving it cooked up in the garage for most of its life except to pull it out to race against other expensive cars just to see "whose better" in a fully controlled environment.

And that kind of is what part of the military's about - showing your country isn't a push-over.

and idk about ol' 'murica but over at the UK we have assets to protect you know! :P (Falklands, Gibraltar) although America hasn't really had to fight a war protecting its home territory for hundreds of years...

Stealth, well - it actually has a formula. I'm not too sure if it's classified or restricted (could even be secret) and so I'm not going to post it on some internet for all to see :D

But yes, that's a good analogy.

A glider. lmfao.

Hit me up when you are allowed to fly one of these alone ;)

Well, I was going to do a Glider Scholarship with a VGS and would have gained solo wings (via ATC), but in the end I only did a couple of glides and ended up quitting the ATC as a whole xD

Oh come on the J20? That thing is 100% reverse engineering.

Yay!

A little disapointing that they don't have the KA-50 Blackshark in that List. It does look badass.

I just put together this video from last weekend in Reno, Nevada. It's about the sounds so there is no music and the video quality/lighting is kind of messed up (I didn't know what I was doing with my camera). Anyway if you like airplane noise then you should like this, watch it in HD:

As I'm curious if my identification is correct, and as all I've seen in this thread is young blood, I'll post this...

The question is, is that a B-29, as I initially thought when I snapped that on the beach at Pendleton 3 years ago? If so, it'd make it Fifi. If not, I'll just go sit in a corner with a microburst over my head.

Yep - B-29 fifi

As for aother ideas for Arma3 anyone seen the new Textron Air-Land Scorpion attack jet? Development work on the programme started in January 2012 with the aiming building the “world’s most affordable tactical jet aircraftâ€, says Textron chairman and chief executive Scott Donnelly. Designed with internal weapons bay, reduced operating costs ($3000/hr), long loiter time, irregular battlefield, COIN, maritime, surveillance missions. It could replace the A-10 and spare the cost of using more expensive aircraft for simple roles? Fully composite construction, Reduced Fatigue and Corrosion Issues, 20,000 Hour Service Life.

Anyone in Dublin on the 15th of this month for the FlightFest? Some good displays from a F-86 Sabre, Hawker Hunter, Strikemaster. My favourites have to be the B-17 and A380 that showed up.

Standing right underneath a Flying Fortress and A380 was an awesome moment.

Many people either don't know or conveniently forget that the Japanese invaded Alaska in WWII http://www.kuriositas.com/2012/11/the-forgotten-battle-japanese-invasion.html

But, on the topic of planes, I prefer the current and last generation aircraft. I think the west needs to take a page out of Russia's playbook and just improve on current designs.

What about an M346 as a CAS aircraft.

Yay!

Also a good idea - ordered by 3 in the region, looks like more sales to Eurotrainer too? Reason I liked the Textron scorpion is the internal bay - you could put anything in it from a 30mm cannon, sensor package, bombs etc without changing the external model?
