Duke_of_Ray 0 Posted July 28, 2002 Should Greek Mythology be tuaght in schools if other religons can't? It was a religon for some so if the Bible can not be taught Greek Mythology should not be taught. I do not want to get into big debate just, I just want your opinion.I am tired of debating heavy for a while.
Tovarish 0 Posted July 28, 2002 I say teach all religions in school and let the kids pick, as long as Atheism is one of the choices
Frisbee 0 Posted July 28, 2002 Ahem, greek mythology is a part of history,it's not a seperate course anywhere as far as i know... And imho religion doesn't belong in state funded schools, seperation of religion and state is a nice thing.(unless you can choose of course)
Ex-RoNiN 0 Posted July 28, 2002 Please tell me what Greek Mythology has to do with religion Please tell me, I am DYING to know this!
Badgerboy 0 Posted July 28, 2002 The world would be a happier place if religion had never existed. How much pain and suffering has been wrought over the centuries to prove whose interpretation of 'god' is correct. Besides children almost always follow the religion that there parents force upon them. The element of choice doesn't come into effect until they are old enough to realise they are being hoodwinked. Frisbee 0 Posted July 28, 2002 Exactly,it was a religion, ancient greek isn't a real language anymore either,it's a dead language. And i'm sorry if i'm starting a debate here, but religions did have their (slightly insignifficant) value of slightly setting human values.
Duke_of_Ray 0 Posted July 28, 2002 NO NO NO NO!!!! Ok let me...uhhh..refraise this. If greek mythology can be taught in schools why can other religons not be, well there is that one place in Calafornia about putting kids through a muslim class do not know if it is true. Please let's not get in another Huge Debate! I am an idiot!!!! LOL
Frisbee 0 Posted July 28, 2002 Knowing yourself is the first step to wisdom. As I see it,greek mythology is just general knowledge, something everyone should know,it's not a religion,it's history. It's also nice to see the symbolism when ICBM's or so have mythological names like Atlas and so on. Just general knowledge.

Frisbee 0 Posted July 28, 2002 Sorry, but over here it is,the basics of every religion are taught in history lessons here. Islam, buddhism, christianity, the basics and their history are explained in an objective manner,we do have our religious lessons, but you can choose between morals(for the atheists among us,like me),roman catholic, islam, buddhism, protestant and some more i can't recall, you can also just skip those lessons with the reason that they clash with your beliefs. I think that's the best situation really.
Guest Posted July 28, 2002 Greek mythology is general western culture and should be thaught IMO. I also think that (and it is so in Sweden) religion should be taught. That is all major world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Shintoism (have I forgoten some?).
Badgerboy 0 Posted July 28, 2002 Learn from the mistakes of other eh Denoir? The Greeks played a fundamental part in what we call civilisation these days, and as such should be taught in schools.
USSoldier11B 0 Posted July 29, 2002 Personally I find cultural studies and history to be facinating. I don't think one can ever learn too much about it. Of course Greek Mythology should be taught in schools. In the high school that I attended, it was taught in both Western Civ and Classical Humanities. Paratrooper 0 Posted July 29, 2002 Well we have quite in-depth RE (religious education) in our schools, or at least the ones I went to. Ancient Greek mythology is a fundement of a great deal of poetry and literature. A rudementary understanding is needed to appreciate much of it. So yes. Oh Tovarish, Atheism is in a distinct minority in the world (as discussed in the God thread).
Warin 0 Posted July 29, 2002 There is a difference between Mythology and Theology. The history of the Christian church is taught in schools, at least when I went to school. And so learning about a dead set of religious beliefs (Greek Mythology) is not the same thing as having 'religion in the classroom'

We were taught openly about many religions. As it sholud be. from what I can see this lack of basic knowledge about other religions and cultures is only hurting America. Well, not really taught but sort of breifly went over all of them. In my Western Golbal Studies class last year, we learned a bit about other cultures and their religions. As well as some Eastern European things we touched on. Basically went over the history of Roman Catholic and all that. But, yes, I think that more about Mythology should be taught in schools. I loved it. It was very interesting. I also thing all the ancient Roman stuff should be taught too. Ancient history is the best.

Duke_of_Ray 0 Posted July 29, 2002 Greek Mythology is one of the most baoring subjects I have ever been taught, it was taught in my "english" class. If you can not talk about other religons in American schools then greek mythology is out of the question, plus it is insanley boarding. Whats orse I may have to read Harry Poter this year! I wil try my mom to write me a note saying I can not read it. Yep clase de ingles is something I dread, we even get Shakesphere, spelling?, which is just beyond boaring. We need some history books, like by Stephen Ambrose, and other military related issues! We could learna bout the armies of other countries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes that what we should do! Harnu 0 Posted July 29, 2002 When teachers get paid more than doctors, and schools get a LOT more funding, a lot of this will be fixed with schools. How did you find Mythology boring? I loved it. And Shakespere can be pretty boring. I wish we could learn about warfare, but idiot soccer moms who want to get rid of gym class and dodge ball would stop that from happening. Duke_of_Ray 0 Posted July 29, 2002 It just is not interesting to me so I do not really listen, I can always retake test and make a highre grade. My friends and I usually sit over and do stupid stuff like hit ourselves and other dumb things. I dread english class.....
