Weapon damage reduced when attached a silencer?

Recommended Posts

The only way a suppressor can slow a bullet down is if the expanding gasses that the suppressor is trying to slow down, exit in front of the bullet, something the baffles are supposed to prevent, and effectively push against the direction the bullet is traveling. So basically a badly designed suppressor would slow the bullet down, but a well designed one would not. The only thing that's going to slow down the bullet in a barrel is the charge driving the bullet.

So much generalisation!

The facts are, SOME suppressors reduce energy imparted into the built thus reduce range, on the other hand SOME suppressors increase energy imparted into the built thus increase range, while some suppressors neither reduce or increase energy imparted into the built but instead screw up the reliability of some fire modes, it depends on the nature of construction, suitability and explicit purpose, there is isn’t a universal correct YES/NO or DO THEY/DON’T THEY answer and to argue ANY different is a little silly.

IF BIS want to slightly reduce the effectiveness of some/all suppressed weapons in A3 then there is NOTHING intrinsically wrong with that IF you assume the suppressors are made by the manufacture of the gun (or their OEM) and that the basic military criteria was reliability of the gun in all firing modes in battlefield conditions over some marginal loss in power, given the fact that the 6.5mm round is more capable anyway than today’s 5.56mm NATO and even with marginal losses from suppressor fitment would be far more capable than 5.56mm NATO without suppressor.

An extended barrel (suppressor or silencer) will give the ammo the same amount of damage and maybe extended accuracy, but a lot of people think that it completely silences the weapon, which it seems to in Arma 3 currently.

Even if you remove the bang of the bullet being fired you still have a large amount of mechanical parts in the gun making large amounts of noise (especially automatic guns).

I'm a little tired of this talk for games. It's relative. In reality, a gun is ridiculously loud without taking precautions to lessen the sound output. In a game, we can't have the speakers be that loud or people would go through a set every time they fired a gun, and they'd piss the living hell out of their neighbors every time they shot. Real life and games just can't meet here. You could lessen the gap, but that has it's own potential issues, yadda yadda. Saying that it's unrealistic is pointless because there's no way ArmA could have realistic sounds unless everyone played on an imax and liked permanent hearing damage.

The losses and gains are negligible, and only noticeable if you were to attach a suppressor to a very long range weapon. If you were to attach a suppressor to a long range weapon such as a Tac-50, the ammo and suppressor would be specifically designed to mitigate any issues of decreasing performance. Much like the Mk18. When the Mk18 was developed, it was designed to use a specific type of ammo to ensure reliability while suppressed and unsuppressed while not decreasing performance.

Unless BIS starts literally simulating bullet physics, velocities, and the power of the cartridge, there is really no reason to include anything that decreases or increases performance when using suppressors.

Only matters if you use supersonic or sub sonic ammo with suppressors with sub sonic being the weaker round. Oh and Im talking about real guns not the game. I don't see any diff in the game or in any game for that matter.

The silencers have no downsides (when using them without sub sonic ammo), so it is down to mission makers to "balance" them on missions. Again.

Don't they decrease damage in game? In ARMA 2 they did. Especially with ACE, subsonics were realistically terrible when it came to taking someone down.

Not AFAIK. It's all relative to where you hit the guy, but I can easily kill in one shot with the EBR at 900m with a silencer if I hit center mass in the upper chest. AFAIK in ArmA 2 silencers changed nothing and it was the ammo you used that mattered, since all damage was calculated based on that.
