Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted July 17, 2002 I know this sounds like a bad spamming thread, but I need some stabilising feedback. I apply all over the world for a lot of different jobs. I speek 4 languages and had a good education but hotel business forces you to start at the bottom, no matter how much you are educated. I can go for consulting, wow, I could show up and it is good money but accounting sucks and consultants suck! I could work in a cool beach resort as Marketing Manager but do I ruin my career. All of you in working age. Tell me your professional experiences. I am really interested
Placebo 29 Posted July 17, 2002 You're young, no ties right? Do some travelling, see something of the world.......
Ex-RoNiN 0 Posted July 17, 2002 Do consulting, loads of cash, will help you get over the "suckiness" of the job. Then you can travel around high class and work on contract.
Warin 0 Posted July 17, 2002 I totally agree with Placebo. There is lots of time to 'settle down' when you are a little older. I say find a good resort job for the summer/fall/winter. Then next spring when you have a little enjoyment past you, you can decide wat to do for a more meaningful career
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted July 17, 2002 I hope you dont get the wrong impression here! I am not egocentric and try to pull attention to my person! Â But as you know a father is not really the best person to listen to. And my mom wants me to stay in europe! But I have learned that I can perfectly survive 6 months on a remote island resort. But generally a contract is 2 years! Â But again the question (computer games are fun, I know but many of us are now really having a life with responsibility) what do YOU want to do with your life? (serious context)
ralphwiggum 6 Posted July 18, 2002 my suggestion is that you start from bottom. 2 years of obligation is a bit much, but if you want to make sure that you know what you want to do, spend some time. consultant may look lucrative, but you'll end up starting from bottom anyway. and my personal opinion is that you need to have some work experience to see how office dynamics/politics go. so don't be afraid to start from bottom. you'll learn something.
ralphwiggum 6 Posted July 18, 2002 and seeing a lot of different aspects of life is important. but that does not mean that you just grab a bag and a guitar and travel. you need to start your future career basis, one by one. so working at foreign places could be a good start. just don't forget to take your OFP CDs
Supah 0 Posted July 18, 2002 I miss the "Get drunk and play OFP while girlfriend does the working and you pretend to keep the house clean and tidy" option
LauryThorn 0 Posted July 18, 2002 I suggest the "Seize the day" option. Whether it is the first of those options, I don't know, but I do know that life is short and is ticking away as I type. Go for it! I think that the fact that you're travelling in the first class won't sooth you too much, if the plane crashes, know what I mean? See the world and enjoy the life if/while you can. BoonieRat 0 Posted July 18, 2002 I don't think its gonna be of much help to you. but!, seeing as you asked ... I'd like to get Å10,000 behind me in the next 5-10 years. (being a 33year old ex Heroin addict on the dole is'nt going to help!.I've managed to make it through with my Morals, Health and Sanity intact, my main ambition in life is to be free of the (IMO), Hellish RatRace. The money is for a 30-35ft boat with a sail on(I can't spell YOT). Nothing fancy mind. you can pick up a 30ft plywood boat capable of crossing the Atlantic for Å5000. I would prefer FibreGlass in case I meet a whale with an itchy back!. I would sincerely like to be a sea tramp. island to island. working the fruitpicking seasons in Europe and the like to get me through year to year. I know this sounds like a pipe dream to most people, but I don't smoke a pipe... If I could find a Country I felt 100% comfortable in. ie. no violence, low crime, Racial tolerance ,ect. I'd like to travel Romany style with a Horse and maybe a Cart. but I don't beleive that place exists so the sea would be the most peacful place I could imagine. Failing the above I think I'd try to emigrate to Isreal and live on a Kibustz (can't spell that either). trouble is I'm not Jewish. as far as I know. Whichever!, I'd like to achieve that levell of self sufficiency that transends money. For you I'd say whatever you do, do something!. don't just sit on your ass watching the world go by!, cause it goes faster every year. do what you want while you're young. then settle. Plan ahead though, If you've got a goal in mind you can keep moving. once you know you want somthing, commit yourself to it!. but!... always leave a escape route open. don't get yourself locked into something you can't get out of,(like a 2 year contract! ). I would'nt settle down to a life of 2.3kids and a mortgage EVER, but you, just don't do it till you're past 25 pushing 30.then you can never get bitter about a wasted youth. cause the trouble with youth is, it feels like it'll last forever, but does'nt ... PS. above all else..., don't listen to me!...,I'm to far removed for my own good ..., ...but your Dad. thats different!. he's probly only trying to prevent you making his mistakes. if you can learn from other peoples mistakes , as well as your own. thats no bad thing!. InRange 1 Posted July 18, 2002 Do you people mean yacht perhaps? Oh well, Albert, I don't know how old you are but if you're, say, 20/21 I'd go and see a bit of the world, do whatever I feel like. Just sit back and enjoy the show they call life. There's plenty of time left to be serious.

Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted July 19, 2002 La Legion etrangere? Well, maybe I should try rob Bill Gates, then hide for a couple of years in the french foreign region to wipe out all the information of my past. And then by the age of 35 I buy my own heli-rent company in Rio and enjoy life! Seriously, this french legion is not really a place to learn to know good buddys. You must have killed someone before, then it would pay of to join

EveronVetsAgainstTheWar 0 Posted July 19, 2002 This french foreign legion intrigues me... can Americans do it? Is there a website? Could you join the Legio, do your 4 years, learn French, see Europe, then come back to the US and join the Air Force...
ran 0 Posted July 19, 2002 you don't see europe ..... you see the world (if you stay for about 8 years tho) you get the french nationality at the end of your contract , but i think you can get back your american nationality , joining the airforce after is not a problem i think , but : - you'll be a little bit old to start a career in the air force -you'll lost the rank and the advantages you got at the legion (not sure about the loss of the advantages , but it's sure for the rank) ---edit--- everybody (almost , the only thing : not being a wanted criminal) can join the legion , the nationality is not a matter , the only thing to do : come to france in a recruitement office and sign theire , you'll be taken in charge by the army at your arrival french foreign legion official site (in french but with loads of infos): http://www.legionetrangere.fr/sommaire.htm official recruitement site for the french foreign legion (in french and in english): http://www.br-legion.com/ you'll learn some basics (you won't be able to read entirely a victor hugo's book or at least understanding it, but you'll know how to ask for a beer etc ... a big part of you french learning will be from the other elements of your unit no matter what's their rank) you'll learn the french military language and will be able to live in france the selection phase is a little bit hard , but if you are in good physical condition it should be ok for more info , PM me
