When will the AI be improved?

Recommended Posts

Come on, we've been dealing with horrible AI since Arma 1. Isn't it time for an upgrade? I was hoping they would be more intelligent, but they don't seem to be much different than Arma 2's AI. They still don't take cover in buildings, they are either horribly inaccurate or aimbots, they rarely use grenades, and the list goes on.

Correct me if I'm wrong somehow, but the AI don't seem to be very much improved, if at all. Anyone have any thoughts about this? Having intelligent AI is a key aspect of a mil-sim game, it would really make the game so much better if they were more realistic.

To counter, I was playing some Co-op with clan mates, and we had hostile AI popping smoke, falling back to better positions, even disengaging in order to wait for reinforcements.

I think it's a tad buggy from time to time, but in no way is it as bad as ArmA II.

I find it pretty much the same as A2 except

they spot better

They occasionally move into houses(not reliably however, just sometimes)

They are more agressive with suppression

They throw granades more

They seem to advance quicker, spending less time in cover

The impression I got was BIS wasn't going to really add any new/improved behaviors until after release. Right now they are just focusing on getting them recognize the world correctly I believe.

I've found they tend to me hit and miss. I was playing online is a custom match where I was opfor, and my AI were ignoring orders and just doing stupid crap. Blufor AI on the other hand was very effective and just destroyed me.

I think there's actually a slight variation in the Blufor and Opfor AI, but overall I think they're still WIP due to it being an alpha and all.

There are 2 things I can verify about people who complain about the AI -

1) They don't play hardcore mode.

2) They don't set all the AI skill settings to 100%

I have found the Arma3 AI are habitually using cover and can shoot the wings off a fly.

That's why you don't set AI to 100% as they will become aimbots.

AI is far more difficult to improve than visual maps, character textures and sounds. So I wouldn't expect any major improvements, even on release.

and Kuskov: I think people are referring to convincing AI intelligence - an AI which is able to recreate human behaviour. It's not a matter of "AI difficulty".

I think the AI is excellent and much improved from ARMA 2. Case in point: letting the AI drive a vehicle is sooo much better than it was in ARMA 2.

I did a little experiment on last night. First I loaded two AI groups side by side into 2 different vehicles. Then I ordered them to move from the Air Base run way to two different spots. Both destinations were on the road, next to the coastal town Agios to the north, perhaps 100m appart, and near the gas station.

One group successfuly was able to navigate arround the air base avaoiding obsticals and quickly made it to the end point.

The second group oddly picked a different path. Right through the air base where they became stuck on the corner of a wall and never reached their destination.

I think some work is still needed.

There are huge differences between smart AI and aimbots.

Well then fine tune aimingAccuracy for both own and enemy AI you can get some nice firefights.
