bates 1 Posted August 19, 2012 I'd really like this solved for future reference as there are quite a few people with unanswered threads on this issue. Not only that, but this issue is extremely annoying as I'm usually in the middle of something in the game, and it can take me around an hour to get back to what I was doing before. The crashes STILL seem to be at complete random. No in-game event signifies a crash, and it's ALWAYS the same thing in the .rpt: Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION at 00000000 Allocator: d:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\dll\jemalloc_bi.dll graphics: D3D9, Device: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti , Driver:nvd3dum.dll 8.17.13.142 resolution: 1680x1050x32 As you can see I've tried using custom memory allocators, I've went through all the included ones with no luck. I've made sure EVERY single one of my drivers is up to date. BattlEye has been reinstalled multiple times. I've redownloaded the entire game (both ArmA2 and Operation Arrowhead). I've verified the game on Steam. My computer temperatures are fine. Other games on my computer don't crash, and they are just as intensive, if not more intensive, than ArmA. I've tried deleting the ArmA folders in my AppData\Local..no luck there either. I've disabled in-game overlay for Steam. I've launched the game with the beta patch. I've tried using only one monitor. I've tried setting all the graphics settings to the minimum, and disabling and enabling certain settings. I've tried running the game as an administrator. Tried editing game folders to have sufficient r/w permissions...no luck! Sometimes I can play for hours at a time and have absolutely no issues, other times I will crash every hour...other times I will crash every 10 minutes!! I played 2 hours today with no crashes, launched the game again, and then played for about 5 minutes before another crash happened! I've tested every aspect of my system so I know it's something to do with ArmA, but I have no idea what is happening here. I really just want to be able to play the game without the feeling that I could CTD at any moment.
chrisb 196 Posted August 19, 2012 I can imagine how frustrating it is. Have you thought about buying hard copies, there seems to be a few with steam downloads that are having crash problems. The cost of hard copies is not that bad and lets be honest if the hard copies work then its over to Steam if the problem lies there. Its only a thought but its what I would do now, at the comparatively low cost of arma games now, sometimes its just worth it to see if it works without the headaches.. Its only a thought but its what I would do now, at the comparatively low cost of arma games now, sometimes its just worth it to see if it works without the headaches.. I don't think it's the Steam copies doing this. Everybody I know has one and has absolutely no issues with crashes, and if they do, it's easily solved. I'm just getting the most erratic, random crashes ever. I just booted up the game and crashed after 4 minutes, I timed it. However, other times, I can play (and yes I have done this) for 7 hours straight, no crashes! Every single time the game crashes I am doing something completely different, and it seems completely unrelated to the previous crash, but when I check the logs...SAME ERROR! Truly baffling! Edit: Not to mention I've been playing the game since January on my old system, this has only started with my new system, but my hardware works fine on other games. I've been playing Battlefield 3 on max settings to hold me over while I fix Arma :( Edited August 19, 2012 by Bates

This cancels out hardware almost completely. Are your crashes happening on the same criteria that mines are? Completely random times, seems to be happening without any kind of trigger to the crash at all?

bates 1 Posted August 19, 2012 (edited) Why are you using "jemalloc"? As I said, the crashes happen with all of the memory allocators. This is just a custom memory allocator that I tried. I've been too lazy to change it back to the default one. I use the default one when using the beta patch however, which is what I've been doing for the past two days. The crashes happen with tbb4 or whatever it's called as well, the default one. Edited August 19, 2012 by Bates Forgot stuffs.

EDcase 87 Posted August 19, 2012 Duno if it'll help with crashing but I guess at this point anything is worth a try :( Have you tried with -winxp in startup? Hope u get it sorted...
bates 1 Posted August 19, 2012 try with out any of the dlls. Will default to Windows default. I've tried the default allocator as well, it doesn't seem to have any effect on the crashes. They still come around. The problem is that these crashes are very hard to test for, as they could happen at any point. "5 minutes to 5 hours" is how I would describe them. I did however, crash with every allocator, including the default :(
dmarkwick 261 Posted August 19, 2012 Only thing I would say is that it happens quite a way into any game, say about 15-20-30 minutes. I haven't done any pruning of addons or anything yet, and I just installed the beta now so I'll see how that goes.

I suspect one of the game updates myself, I know Tankbuster has these issues with JTD Fire & Smoke specifically, but I haven't made any experiments yet. But, JTD F&S was stable & performing well for a couple of years with no issues, which is why I (low level) suspect a game patch.

Unfortunately I can't suspect a patch as I've only tried playing on this system 1.62 onwards. I wonder if our .mdmp files are of any use to the developers. Tankbuster 1746 Posted August 21, 2012 I know Tankbuster has these issues with JTD Fire & Smoke specifically, My crashes were eventually tracked down to a different addon, the Jon editor update. ---------- Post added at 12:16 ---------- Previous post was at 12:13 ---------- Has the OP confirmed that all his memory is good? Given that overheating seems to be ruled out (and yes, Myke, I too wish I had a penny for every troubleshooting post that said "temps are good") has he run the memtest routines? Given that overheating seems to be ruled out (and yes, Myke, I too wish I had a penny for every troubleshooting post that said "temps are good") has he run the memtest routines? I have yes, the memory tests were fine, and other games which use the same amount of RAM work fine as well, I can play those for hours and hours without any issues, for example games like Skyrim and Battlefield 3 which use in excess of 1GB on the .exe will run with no exception errors, freezes, lag or crashes, indicating that it isn't a memory issue, although the exception appears to point to one..having tried everything I think this is a driver or patch issue. If DMark posts his dxdiag too, perhaps we can compare them and check for hardware related faults?

dmarkwick 261 Posted August 22, 2012 Can you post S/N of your notebook? Mmmm... why please? :)
Horus 83 Posted August 22, 2012 To see which chipset version, B2 or B3, that notebook have :)
dmarkwick 261 Posted August 22, 2012 Well it's not printed anywhere on the notebook body, so I guess I might have to go digging around for it :)
Horus 83 Posted August 22, 2012 OK when you find S/N go here and see...and update BIOS also because you have version from 03/03/2011 and last1 is from 2011-10-06 :)
dmarkwick 261 Posted August 22, 2012 OK when you find S/N go here and see...and update BIOS also because you have version from 03/03/2011 and last1 is from 2011-10-06 :) Might do that, but I haven't had any crashes since I went beta with ArmA, so I'll probably leave it if I don't get any more crashes. I've had the notebook for a little over a year now with zero problems (aside from this recent occasional ArmA crashing) I'm a "if it's not broke...." sort of guy ;)
dmarkwick 261 Posted August 24, 2012 Just for info - since I used the latest alpha I haven't had a crash. Fingers crossed it was a temporary glitch.
Tankbuster 1746 Posted August 24, 2012 That's good news, for sure, but I always have a bad feeling when a problem fixes itself by unknown action.
