Some questions before purchase

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have downloaded the demo of Arma 2 , I like it but I have some questions to help me decide if to get the game or not.

Before I downloaded the demo I have read several reviews of Arma 2 which I believe were written when the game was first published and most of them praise the multiplayer part of the game but are less enthusiastic about the single player campaign. Some report a "infuriatingly buggy single-player campaign" , "bugs sometimes make it impossible and frustrating to complete a mission", " bugs that can screw an entire level, forcing you to restart from scratch".

I do not play multiplayer games and if I decide to purchase Arma 2 it will be only to play the single player missions, so I am a bit worried. Are all these complains about these bugs a myth, and if not, have they already been addressed and fixed with patches ? I am not looking for a game completely free of bugs/ minor bugs if in spite these bugs I find the game playable and enjoyable ( I am playing "Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy" which after several patches still have some bugs but which according to me do not interfere with the gameplay at all)

Are there good users or third party single missions and campaigns?

How do 'Arma 2' and 'Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead' integrate in "Arma 2: Combined Operations" ? I guess that "Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead" has some improvements over the original Arma 2, but are they or some of them present in the original 'Arma 2' in the installed "Arma 2: Combined Operations" bundle ?

Thanks

Arma engine has made huge steps forwards since its release, now it's no longer as buggy as before.

Operation Arrowhead can be installed into the same directory as Arma 2, this will give you Combined Operations.

There are lots of good user made campaigns out there, all worth trying!

Hi folgore_airborne, thank you very much for answering.

About the integration of 'Arma 2' and 'Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead' in the "Arma 2: Combined Operations" bundle, what I wanted to understand is if the technical and graphical improvements (or some of them) introduced in 'Operation Arrowhead' are present in 'Arma 2' once 'Operation Arrowhead' is installed into the same directory as 'Arma 2'.

In other words, does 'Arma 2' look graphically or feel or play different once 'Operation Arrowhead' is installed in the directory of 'Arma 2' than when it is played without 'Operation Arrowhead' being installed in the same directory ?

Thanks for helping

Well, the 3D models remain the same, the textures remain the same so....no big change from that side. On the other side, OA includes a lot of engine improvements which are tied to the respective .exe. This might help to turn quality settings one notch up which results in a better experience when playing ArmA 2 content. So from my point of view, if you have both there is no logical reason to launch the arma2.exe ever again.

[FRL]Myke,

thanks a lot, that's exactly what I wanted to understand!

tom3kb,

Great tip. I just visited the Armaholic website and there are indeed quite a lot user made scenarios. Good to know.

One more question

I have a Steam account but is there any reason why I should purchase Arma 2: Combined Operations directly from Bohemia Interactive digital download instead of Steam ?

According this thread (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=101214&highlight=steam) it seems that many have some problems with Steam downloaded version.

there is no other game like Arma

how can you doubt if it is worthy

Arma could cost 4 times more and it would worthy for 200%

you have joy for years, you have many mods, you have mission editor, you have soldiers from different countries, different eras

so many freeware addons that it is hard to count them :)

and you can play what YOU want, not strict line of developer - you have mission editor, you can even make mission in which you are SS-soldier hunting for rabits in forest full of Colonial Marines

anything

you can play in city-life style, you can play like HQ and command battle, you can play any soldier you wish

not like in other games - where someone chosen scenario, here you are person who decide about scenarios

probably most of weapons made after 1930 are made as addons by many addonmakers, you have almost all rifles in the world

how can you doubt is it worthy

how much rifles you have in other games ? 10 ? 5? or 12?

here you have 50 in one mod , downloading few mods you have such variety that other gamers never dreamed about

the same with vehicles , can you enter and steer them in other games ? or they just "scenery" ?:)

Hello,

I purchased Arma 2: Combined Operations today from Sprocket and I am right now downloading both files. I see that Operation Arrohead is OA_setup_1_59.exe and Arma 2 is Arma2_110_setup.exe.

There is a patch named "ARMA 2: Combined Operations / Operation Arrowhead / Reinforcements Patch 1.60" from 26.12.2011 (http://www.arma2.com/index.php?Itemid=20&option=com_rokdownloads&view=folder〈=en )

Do I need to patch with patch 1.60 to be fully updated once both games are installed and integrated ( Arma 2 installed first and then Operation Arrowhead in the same directory as Arma 2) or are both downloaded games already updated and so the combined games ?

Thanks.

Yes, once you install both Arma2/OA, then install the latest 1.60 patch and you should be good to go. The patch includes the latest updates for Arma2, OA, and BAF/PMC addons
