I want this game, should I?

Recommended Posts

Hi peoples!!

I have been eying this game off for weeks, but I am worried that I will be disappointed

what are your thoughts? I am new to simulator games, but I know a good game when I see it, and I believe it is a good game... but what are your thoughts? $50 is a lot to pay if I only play it once hehe

thanks

nate

you can always wait for the upcoming patch which will improve the flight model and some other issues ... and thus get the game in better 'state' than now

In my opinion, the OFP/Arma series and Take On caters to a specific group of gamers - you really have to try it to see if you like it.

kyro02,

I'd recommend checking out the many YouTube vids on ToH to see how great the game looks, and if its gameplay appeals to you. Also see this thread:

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=126867

You may want to buy/download an ArmA2 DLC like Private Military Company or British Armed Forces ($10/each - great deal), to see if you like the hardcore gameplay that BIS games offer. If you like those games, I think you'll love ToH.

Don't be shy now.....;)

It's a little odd hearing this from a dev, and refreshing as well. Your post raises many questions, and elicits many doubts that weren't present heretofore.

I hope the FM "improvements" won't necessitate re-learning how to fly from scratch!

Consider it like owning a whole new game ;-)

Seriously changes in the flight model will require you to adapt your flying (and controller sensitivities) to suit. However if you have become proficient in the current model, it shouldn't take you too long.

Try the updated flight model in this post and you can see how it might change things. I put a few hours into this new community made model today and yesterday and although intitially it was hard to get to grips with I soon had things under control again.

Hmmm. I thought the preview and beta were for testing out FMs, not the release itself. Currently I have little to no interest in learning a new FM, but I guess I will be forced to develop such an interest. Blech.

I didn't see the FM change at all from CP1 to release.

The FM changed BIG TIME in one the last previews, I think it was 84444. After that they went right to beta. It was a very profound change. Here are my first comments on the new 84444 FM:

After some getting used to, I liked it:

I do not know if the FM has been modified since 84444. It doesn't seem to have changed much.

But the point here is that the previews and beta SHOULD have been where FMs were extensively tested, whether or not they actually were.

is this worth buing? 100%. why?

it looks amazing - and that's always abig part of feeling like youre 'there'.

the flight model is a bit twitchy now, but i have tried the community patch and it is pretty nice to fly - actually becomes easier. pilots have been making the comments now that this has the potential to be one of the most 'sim' products out there. which is a plus.

then you have BIS support which is better than any other company i've know - they keep improving their products. which adds tons of value based on a single purchase. i reckon they'll come up with a fm that'll be really good. again pilots in the community's feedback & knowledge is going to make a huge difference.

They probably were tested, but like any game, once it goes live it is sudden;y being 'tested' by a hell of a lot more people. Stuff that felt good pre-release suddenly doesn't feel so good anymore. BI games are traditionally worked and re-worked based on community feedback (Arma 2 OA for example is about to get a massive patch). Personally, I think this is a good thing - it means they listen to feeback and act on it.

Also if you find you don't want to throw away your flight model as it is, you can back it up now and then run with it after a patch (assuming all they change is the XML).

I have put a lot of effort into learning to fly this game, and although I know I might have to go through some of the pain again when a patch is released, I think that it will be worth it.

To the original poster though, it's hard to say if you will like the game or not - it depends on what type of games you like. This one, especially if you want to fly in expert mode is quite difficult to learn, but not as difficult as something like DCS:A10 or DCS:Black Shark 2.

Of course it's a good thing - a GREAT thing. But more testing and tweaking could have occurred sooner rather than later, which is also a great thing, as it would prevent having to patch core elements of the game after release. All the pilots (and many others) in the forums contributed massive amounts of ideas and opinions for the preview and beta.

There is no way I (and probably anyone else) would keep the old model once a new improved one is released. It's just that the current FM has been burned into our brains for weeks if not months, and it will take time to fill in those creases and replace them with new ones. But I agree that it will all be fun and worth it in the end.

I hope that all missions are tested well with the new model, and tweaked accordingly.

kyro02, I think that ToH is a must have, in large part because of the amazing graphics, expansive, detailed environments, and awesome missions that will test your gaming skills (and your computer) as they have never been tested before.

Several here have mentioned the new flight model about to come out, but rest assured that even with the current model, the game is a BLAST to play, even with keyboard/mouse only.

BIS releases new downloadable content for their games either for purchase or for free with patches (e.g. Arma 2 Eagle Wing campaign). And there is the editor which allows you to make your own new content, both for multiplayer and singleplayer. And with their unparalleled support and large, enthusiastic, and dedicated community, BIS games are gifts that keep on giving.

cheers guys, i'll look at purchasing this weekend, I do have a joy stick but with not much joy-stick experience as I find it hard to navigate from past simulator experience, but willing to give it a shot for this game. I do prefer mouse and keyboard, but first will try the joy stick. I have a 'self' JS-3101V Vibrating 12 button' joystick, to many buttons to learn lol

I will look forward to the community patch also

thanks,

nate

I play with kb/mouse only, and love it. You may want to wait to get started on the Career segment until patch #2 comes out. You can have fun with the Free Flight exploration, Time Trials, Challenges, and perhaps multiplayer until then.

In my opinion I would wait on till the new flight models come out, and see where it goes.

The Flight models as they are make this game in my opinion not fun at all!

The original flight model on the Light is wicked fun (for me), using expert flight difficulties and keyboard mouse. :thumb:

Less so for the Medium and Heavy flight models, however. :icon_neutral:

I'm ok with the medium heli flight model, but I'm not so sure about the heavy heli model. It is quite twitchy on Expert.
