Do you need a server to play with 20 players?

Recommended Posts

Or can you just use a decent host? I am attempting to get my clan into some Arma II but it's gonna be kinda hard to do so if we have to have a server that is really expensive. On a mission with not too much going on, 20 players, and AI..would you need a server?

I would say yes, but then again, test it.

You need a good uplink and a really good host.

I don't think CTI or Warfare is the kind of missions you want to test and not too many AI.

Who's the cheapest server company then? I don't have a lot of money to work with especially for only 20 people.

How much money do you have available each month to put in for a 20 man server?

You generally don't want to pay too little or you'll probably get a shitty srv.

Believe it or not, we played with 32 players on a home machine! Was ArmA2's 1.10 netcode and not the horrible mess that is 1.59 OA.

We are gonna be using the beta patch (whichever is the latest) so maybe we could use a home machine?

I am located in the US, Texas to be exact.

If that pc wasn't dedicated (aka a client was being played on it as well), I don't believe you. I refuse to believe that would work well.

GossamerSolid. he didnt say it was fine. just not as horrible as in OA :p

but i also have a hard time beliving it was fine if it was a player that hosted the server for 31 other players.

Acoustic. if you all chip in about 1.5 - 2.5 dollars per month you would get a great sever(s).

Just remeber that some missions out there REQIURE it to be ran on a dedicated server or you will get weird errors.

I think Domination is one of them this may have changed though.

If you dont play it on a dedicated server then some things dont sync right etc.

I had this problem I was playing from the hosted machine and I was getting weird weather compared to others,I could not see very far like 500m where as others had a view distance of 2000m.

themaster was hosting a dedicated server on his rig and playing on it with us the same time, so not a typical hosted game. And actually it weren't 32 players but 48 constantly for about 3 or 4 hours (10 MBit upstream and afair he has 100 MBit downstream).

So 20 players should be fine too if it's done the same way (depends on your connection as dedi host).

Big advantage, the mission carries on even if the host client crashes.
