MechWarrior Online

Recommended Posts

For those of you out there who love a bit of giant robots blowing shit up, we have mechwarrior online. this is what has become of that news from 2 years ago about the new mechwarrior "reboot".

the game is now going to be a Free to play MMO action Sim game rather than a box retail single player experience. the game is slated for a 2012 release date

the new formula is significantly different from the original concept, but i think it looks awesome all the same.

BT/MW is my favorite scifi universe and it is great news to finally see some new progress on this long awaited game. I am going to be quite optimistic about this game as the devs and associates seem very passionate about the IP and would like to do it justice.

here are some of the relevant links to important info

Thanks for the info. :)

I've been waiting on this one for a long time and almost gave up due to the lack of info, thinking it was in some kind of development hell.

Cool.

The last one I played was the Crysis mod.

Hmm, bit concerned about the whole Free to Play / Pay to Win aspect. Although it is nice to see a new Mech game in the works all the same.

if you read through all the material the devs seem to be pretty committed to making the game fair for non payers. they have also made a couple posts on thier forums the the affect, "dont panic about F2P! we have this covered!"

I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt that they know what they are doing. afterall, I want this project to see the light of day, and to not fall into purgatory again

I've paid for every other MechWarrior game. If it's good I shall have no hesitation in paying for it again.

However, if it's just player vs player, I will probably just play it for free for a bit and then move on.

Fair comments. I'd just feel more comfortable paying up front for a quality game than worrying about what I might or might not be missing out on. I'd gladly pay full price for a blockbuster MechWarrior game. Loved MechCommander, MW2 and MW2 Mercs to bits, never really got into the others. Guess i'll wait and see.

I'm kinda disappointed because I was hoping for a good single player experience. I'll still keep an eye on this.

if the game turn out to be successful, they may release some single player DLC packs or something.

it makes sense to me. the company releases the first iteration of the game, a few mechs a few maps with a stable engine. they get some cash flow going, they can get some more mechs and more maps done (maybe some new features). once the MP portion is stable, they can then afford to start making the single player aspect of the game, which they could release for some DLC prices 10-20.

afterall they chose this free to play model because they do not have the resources to do a full single player/multilayer box game.

Bit afraid that it will only go into some sort of arena DM/CTF shooter with "highly customizable mechs". Nothing about the Battletech story or any connection to it. Something like a average F2P shooter for profit casual players.

all this month and perhaps for the next few months MWO team will be releasing new information every wednesday.

this week, an interview with MWO concept artist. i found the interview to be too informal and didnt contain any game relevant info, but really, what should i expect from a concept artist?

there are a couple composite sketches of various versions of the atlas, but not really worth linking

NoRailGunner: basically at worst it will be like every other mechwarrior games MP to date, basic DM game with no relevance to the story. we are hoping with the territory control mechanic, and the take and hold game style (among others) that the game will be relavent within the universe.

also while we have no info yet on how customizable the mechs will be, there has been a whisper from the devs that it will be restricted in some fashion. i very much hope for this

New material day! Over the last week the devs have been taking player questions about the game and its "rebooting" and answered them.

there is alot of good info, and more importantly, they answered my question! :D

EDIT, new spot of info, looks like the game will be powered by CRYENGINE 3

Mechwarrior Online a CryEngine 3 game

By Wesley Yin-Poole Published 18 November, 2011

F2P game to offer "true AAA quality".

Mechwarrior Online is being made using CryEngine 3, Crytek has announced.

The Piranha Games-developed free-to-play title is built using the same engine that Crytek used to make Crysis 2.

MechWarrior Online is the first full entry in the combat series for nearly 10 years. It's due out on PC in the second half of 2012.

You control a BattleMech during the early stages of a future interstellar war.

Crytek said 2012 will see free-to-play games "step up to offer true AAA quality to gamers".

Crytek is using CryEngine 3 for its own free-to-play game, Warface. More than 20 CryEngine licensees are using the engine to make free-to-play games, it said.

I played the Crysis Mod.

It was pretty authentic.

Its update Wednesday, with Q&A2 (Community Warfare)

Also last weeks Dev interview, this time the "continuity editor". they are putting alot of stock into the fiction of MWO. i think that kicks ass

I think our fears can be laid to rest

plus some interviews and mini previews (most of them contain similar info, but have small new interesting bits each)

:yay:

Also, a few of us over at MWO have been playing some MechWarrior4 Mercs (MW4 Free, Available for DL at mektek.net) online through the GamesRanger service. if you fancy some stompy robots early and want to meet some people com'on by! since almost all of us are american we have games in the evenings (4pm-11pm) (i use the same user name, ill be easy to spot ;))

and yeah, mw4 sucks compared to 2 and 3, but the mektek team have added some new nifty features to make the game better
