Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted June 5, 2002 I know it is not fair that not all countries are to be seen above, but do you SERIOUSLY BELIEVE that Belgium/la Belgique has a chance to become world-champion? Their team is far from being bad, but there are so many countries that won their first match that this is no indicator of performance. All I could do was to chose countries corresponding to past performance and the favourites of the press! I am sorry for the ones missing, doesnt mean they are underdogs. PitViper 0 Posted June 5, 2002 Schweitzer Soccer is already the most popular sport for young kids in the U.S (just recently surpassed baseball). However, it tends to sputter once it gets to high school where athletes start disseminating into other sports. Before the MLS, soccer players would wither on the vine once out of high school (or the occasional college teams). The MLS now allows American soccer players to continue on and maybe be transfered to European clubs in the future. This has already shown results in the recent improvements in the U.S team. However, Soccer will ot attain the level that it is in Europe for many decades if it does catch on. You have histories of great soccer/football players, we have long histories in baseball, hockey, and American football with Joe Dimaggio, Babe Ruth, Joe Namath, Wayne Gretzky, and Bobby Orr
Ex-RoNiN 0 Posted June 5, 2002 Great game by Ireland today, well impressed I don't think the big teams have shown their potential yet. Looks like they started with the mindset "we can beat those underdogs while half asleep", not with what they can show. Next few games should be very interesting when they start fighting Oh, and Argentina, I want Crespo and Batistuta on the pitch

They won't win at all, it's obvious, they just aren't good enough, but it's just fun to vote for them and see all the people voting for the big clubs while one guy votes for Belgium. Personally i don't really mind it at all. At least they are better than 5 years ago ps: Jap and the other belgian guy, where are you from?

Irland gets 1-1 against Germany in the 91:st minute (extension time)!! Way to go Ireland! <span id='postcolor'> I have to admit they deserved it - they fought, had many chances and only Oliver Kahn (the german keeper, our best man) prevented a defeat. The german team wasn't as dangerous as the Irish most of the time. Good game anyway. Now it depends on Kamerun... As they and Ireland win against Saudi-Arabia anyway, that match will decide wether we take part in the next round or not.
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted June 5, 2002 YOu know what, I WILL KEEP MY PREDICTIONS FOR MYSELF, cause this worldcup is so damm confusing that I can only be wrong!!! PitViper 0 Posted June 5, 2002 Even if the U.S was fairly successful in this world cup, I believe popularity will, realistically, be short-lived. Recall that popularity was at an all-time high when the women's team won the world cup in a recent year yet has since waned from that level at this current time. Brits are not derogatory term for British as far as I know. limey is. if Brit is derogatory term, so is yanks (for yankees). why don't you set the precedent by stop using 'jap' while referring to japanese? I really don't think even mods can change your account name, and I really don't care since JAP could stand for anything for your name, but refering Japanese as 'jap' is just a sick behavior. what WW2 complex?
