Weird performance after video card update.

Recommended Posts

Hi soldiers,

I'm hoping you guys can help me with some weird issue.

I recently updated my 9800GT 512MB VC for a GT430 1GB. All my other games like Rise of Flight and FSX have benefited considerably from the update except Arma2 because for some reason the FPS dropped, especially when I'm near the woods. The panning has also become jumpy.

I have updated the driver to the latest one. Any clues as to wether I should tweak something? I also did a uninstall-reinstall to no avail.

Thanks,

RacingLad

Try deleting your Arma2OA.cfg file and then restarting the game. This sometimes helps (it will re-create the config and you will need to set the graphics settings again in game).

I was not sure how strong the 430 vs. the 9800 is, so i looked it up. The tests confirmed what i was afraid of, the 9800 is 50-60 % faster in games then a 430. :butbut:

430 test results in here

9800 test results in here

(a 430 can be compared with 5570 at 1280x1024 4xaa/16xAF test results, see 430 test results link to confirm this, compare then 9800 results to 5570 at given resolution and AA/AF values)

Hope that helps.

Damn!

Any video card you would recommend on a budget that's faster than the 9800GT?

Thanks for your info by the way...

What's your budget? For the best bang for your buck, you'll probably want to get an ATI card.

Check this page for a rough comparison of cards and prices.

Always a good idea to take a peak at benchmarks before pulling the trigger on a new GPU. Keep in mind every new generation brings in a complete range of cards; the 9800 is getting pretty dated but was on the upper end of its gen, where the 430 is pretty close to the bottom of its cohort. Enthusiast hardware usually tops economy stuff for a generation or two, in raw performance at least.

For ArmA, at this point I probably wouldn't buy anything less than Radeon HD 6770 or GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

Check the hierachy chart in my sig. Passmark puts a gtx470 above the 6990 while the latter is twice as powerfull.

Yeah, that PassMark chart makes no sense whatsoever.

Yeah, thats easy. When they test graphic cards they always make a price/value table, this table shows which card give you the most FPS for 1 euro. Its nice to take a look on it to find out the best buy.

Here it is, but the prices 2 months old (22th June 2011):

Or you go back to the 9800 card for some time until there are new graphic card generations (at the end of the year or beginning 2012).

Used NV GTX460 or AMD 5770

Tried the GTX460 before ( Gigabyte one, super silent ) and it ran ArmA2 very well and the graphics looked darn nice even on mid settings, the 5000 series on the other hand also seem to run A2 excellent, new 6000 series arent faster as A2 uses a older shader model that the 5000 series supports better, it even ran ok on my old 4870 but if you get oen of those get the 1GB Vram variant otherwise you get Vram overflow artifacts in demanding missions

How did you manage to buy a 430 when you already had a 9800?

I'm just wondering what sort of research went into your purchase decision.

I think it was a case of thinking "higher/newer number = better"

For someone who doesnt read into the stuff it is really confusing i think, a 430 is crap a 460 is excellent, naming shemes are weird in the industry.

Same with CPU naming shemes...

Yet if you find this forum and know how to use the interwebz you probably should also look at some hardware pages before, did it myself for a month and in the end got a super sweet card ( Asus HD6950DCUII ) for the cost of a ref design card.

Anyway, if hes on a budget he should really get a GTX460 or the 5770 both with at least 1GB Vram.

The rule for NVIDIA (for quite a while now) is:

x10 - x50 = Budget

x60 - x95 = Performance

x = the series number

Examples:

430 = Budget (Mid level budget)

9800 = Performance (High level performance)

Now of course a 580 > 9800 by quite a bit. The key to understanding is research.
