dissaifer 10 Posted May 12, 2011 So, someone bought me the Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm game... It's not a great game, but it does have one thing going for it. For the most part, the waves in the sea are pretty good. The company liquid dragon that made the game uses a Dual band tillable FFT waves with procedural foam gen... anyway, here is the link to the description from them...http://www.liquiddragon.com/tech.php And here is a video of some waves from the game. coopr 10 Posted May 12, 2011 Looks really nice indeed. Having some more waves and objects reacting on those waves would be awesome. But I think this would require a lot of cpu power to calculate all these waves. But before they update the wave simulation I would first like to see some engine upgrades that add more possibilitys for naval warfare. Operateable destroyers etc. Possibility to walk on moving chip etc. The waters in arma2 are unexplored because of the lack off good operateable naval units. But bis focus is infantry so I think well have to wait for that
MissionCreep 12 Posted May 12, 2011 But I think this would require a lot of cpu power to calculate all these waves. Shouldn't FFTs tend to be assigned to GPUs, rather than CPUs? Just wondering. FFT is a fairly basic algorithm ...
CarlGustaffa 4 Posted May 13, 2011 I can't afford to spend cpu or gpu cycles on this :) Looks great, but is it worth it as long as it's not a naval sim? I just wish I could control the roughness of the sea independent of "overcast". Or at the very least, depend on wind speed instead.
wolfbite 8 Posted May 13, 2011 Woah that would be bloody amazing in ArmA.....

Mr. Charles 22 Posted May 14, 2011 It does use wind: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/setWind
coopr 10 Posted May 14, 2011 It does use wind: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/setWind But does this wind setting effect the height of waves?
metalcraze 290 Posted May 14, 2011 Waves is the last thing Bohemia needs to work on.
CarlGustaffa 4 Posted May 15, 2011 Wind has no effect on waves, overcast is the governing parameter (see world config). No wind "gusts", but there are some disturbance in the force (lol :D), even if the true parameter is used with setWind. They are variations, but not abrupt or significant enough to be called gusts (imo). If the next game is more SEAL oriented, with more naval action and insertions etc, then by all means - it becomes important (with other stuff, like rebreathers and other scuba gear, underwater swimming etc). But not for the small ponds of Takistan :D
dissaifer 10 Posted May 22, 2011 I found a good paper that discusses the waves and the underwater shine effects (god rays) if the devs wanted to look at it...;) paper
