Major Fubar 0 Posted May 19, 2002 OK, I'm sick of this shit... When you're surfing the net, and some asshole website changes your homepage and/or adds items to your favourites list. (Not to mention goddamn popups, but I've learned to live with them). I use internet explorer 6.0. How do I stop this crap from happening? Hmmm....dunno, there IS some software for that, but I wouldn't be able to recommend anything to ya except maybe WindowWasher, some of those very websites advertize it. It must be those gay porn sites you visit BTW, can anyone explain the purpose of popups, apart from annoying users and make them instantly hate any product advertised this way? Anyway, popups aren't my main concern, it's having my homepage changed, and sites added to my favourites list. If you have a "install certificate" window come up, and don't know who it's from, then say "No" - do not install. Also, I'd recommend hitting "Cancel" on any warning message you get. As for links, again, the site cannot do that by itself. It can have a warning message come up asking "Do you wish to add http://www.bigdick.com to your Favorites?". The thing is they now have scripts which can rename the content of that message, so it ends up saying "By clicking OK, you restrict any personal info from being shared". So they kinda try to cheat you. Either way when I browse warez or porn sites I click "NO" or "Cancel" to everything. I never ever had a link add itself to my favorites or set itself as my homepage. Mister Frag 0 Posted May 19, 2002 Also, make sure that the security settings for your web browser put at least some restrictions on executing Java and ActiveX code. In order for a web site to change your homepage or add something to your bookmarks, they have to execute a small snippet of code, and if you don't allow that, they can't do it. Programs that anyone should have on their system are Ad-Aware, ZoneAlarm, and Free Surfer Mk II; they are a spyware catcher, firewall, and popup killer, respectively.
