Post Fukushima. Where Now for Nuclear Power?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

There is an interesting new TIME article confirming the nature of the failure of the current Nuclear Power and inspection system in the UN and the West.

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2069237,00.html

More proof that Greenpeace should be put in charge of Nuclear Safety inspections.

Meanwhile the renewable power sector are pointing out to the business sector that investing in nuclear is financially stupid. Fukushima wiped out the value of everyone's shares invested in it http://www.evwind.es/noticias.php?id_not=11423

and is already eroding the value of the whole industry, http://af.reuters.com/article/commoditiesNews/idAFLDE7410SW20110502

and we are not yet in to the worst of the Fukushima disaster.

The Japanese Government and the Industries answer? Raise the levels of radiation that Children are permitted to experience by TWENTY TIMES!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/02/parents-revolt-radiation-levels

And the corrupt IAEA's reaction to this? It rolled over.

Wind and other renewable power is increasingly replacing Fossil fuels and Nuclear and it is doing so at an increasing rate. It is time to dump nuclear power.

Wind and other renewable power sources are not even remotely close to being able to meet the world's energy demands by themselves. Nuclear power is still the way forward, and it is unfortunate that this disaster will once again foster an attitude of inane paranoia that will serve only to hinder progress in the field.

Hi all

The Chief Nuclear Advisor to the Japanese Government Professor Toshiso Kosako of The University of Tokyo has resigned in protest at the Japanese Governments increasing Radiation Limits for Children by TWENTY TIMES something they did against his protests and advice.

http://globalspin.blogs.time.com/2011/04/30/how-to-make-a-dramatic-exit-japans-nuke-advisor-quits/

The problem that the nuclear industry in the west still has no solution for is what to do with ever increasing amount of Iradiated Fuel Rods.

http://af.reuters.com/article/energyOilNews/idAFN0230128220110502

Iradiated Fuel Rods are refered to in Marketing Speak by the industry as "Spent" the reality is that they are in fact too iradiated to be safe to put back in the reactors.

The current plan in the industry is to dump this cost on tax payers.

Stockholders and Shareholders ought to be held accountable for, by serving them the majority of money to be paid for, because it was thém whom had illegally gotten money keeping Fukushima Daiichi running against the regulations, and normal procedures, for their own enriching selfish short-term profitary gain!

But sadly, the average taxpayer, not solely those in Japan will feel the taxman slapping in their faces, as gradually more people will get a diagnosis of some form of cancer over the years, which is related to the Fukushima (ánd Chernobyl..!) incident, and poisenous radiation cloud spreading globe wide.

So tax has already been extracted from our wallets, but most don't realize that as of yet.. Future interests, now oiling the money-milking-machine, had already been cemented into their foundations as we speak.. So all can expect their annual health-care insurance-bills to rise, which is neatly linked to these incidents in all it's shady secrecy.

Corporation is a Person, no management will be held accountable in this crisis; company may cease to exist, though.

I don't see people interested in the truth, so let them suffer, I say. You deserve whatever is happening to you, whether you are a slave and refuse to free yourself from bondage by killing your master, or the one inhaling alpha dust particles that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Yes, the major factoR is, of course, the sheer number of people working towards the 'merican dream. Thani refuses to acknowledge that while the hydrocarbon revolution may support nine, or ten billion people in the short term, past the peak of resource production comes a die-off of a few hundred million people, as a start; culminating in resource wars and eventual extinction of billions, for a return to Earth's carrying capacity of 1.5-2b.

The concept of "useless eaters" isn't wishful thinking by the rich, it's embedded in the soil, water & air you breathe when you're in Beijing, China. Refer to my signature, or a few pages back for a more detailed explanation.

You could have summed that all up by saying you believe in the Chaos Theory, and that man is too stupid to adapt and evolve to his constantly changing world, which I don't believe in.

I'm a firm believe in Social Darwinism.

Oh, yes, though, not all are unable of artificial evolution: Europe, UK, The United States have done it. Have you ever tried working while staying at places in the southern latitudes of the globe? People there are incapable of labour, be it mental or physical - there is no need for it most of the time, the sun provides, the seasons don't change, much. ;)

The current theory, whatever you may call it, says that five+ billion people shouldn't have been born after the hydrocarbon revolution. Peak commodities demands it.

Hi all

I pointed out that the radiation leaking into the sea looked too high to be overspill of leftover radiation from the initial incedent in this post:

...IMHO

My fear is that there are increasing signs that we are looking at a "China Syndrome" style full meltdown. The indications are that one or more of the reactors is burning its way down through the soil and rock below the plant, has hit the groundwater (for which there is now evidense: )

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/radioactive-groundwater-below-nuclear-plant/story-e6frf7jx-1226031723826

The suspicion is that the groundwater is then flowing into the sea and that that, is the cause of the massive increase in radiation we are now seeing in the sea.

http://www.nature.com/news/2011/110330/full/471549a.html

iLp4eCPbmUw

I hope I am wrong but I am not the only one fearing this is the case

http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/77065,news-comment,news-politics,expert-fears-full-nuclear-meltdown-at-fukushima-reactor-2

Though TEPCO who released the data has once again been chastised for missreading it.

http://blogs.nature.com/news/thegreatbeyond/2011/04/fukushima_update_more_radiatio.html

Thus increasing the suspicion that they are for the second time pulling the marketing trick of releasing catastrophic data as a marketing ploy in order to reduce public concern. It is a common marketing trick where say, you know the price of fuel is about to go up by 100%, so you say it is going to go up by 1000%, then when it goes up by 100% you then say it is not as bad as was expected. It is called managing peoples expectations. All the stupid people fail to see the trick...

That along with the fact that the radiation levels were continuing to rise just did not fit the explanation TEPCO and the industry were giving.

LOGIC

A) You would have declining radiation if the criticality reaction is reducing.

B) If you put more water on it to reduce the reaction you are diluting the radiation in the water.

C) If you seal off all surface water spill sources then radiation escaping to sea is reduced.

Then due to all three factors radiation levels at sea should decrease and not increase.

As radiation levels at sea are not decreasing then inevitably you have at least two problems:

1) Criticality is still occuring somewhere.

2) You have a subsurface leak.

The fact that TEPCO, the industry and the IAEA could not work that out; leads me to think all of them are incompetant and or, have been involved in a criminaly negligent cover up rather than a clean up.

It seems to me that they are all too busy sweeping it under the carpet to notice that the carpet now has a mountain under it.

In this case the mountain of dirt under the carpet is that the radiation levels out at sea that are continuing to rise and at least one reacter that has gone "China Sydrome" on them.

TOKYO (MarketWatch) — Japan unveiled its plan to support Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Friday, but comments from a key official that the utility’s lenders might need to write-off some of the troubled firm’s debt hammered Japanese bank shares.

The plan was designed to give some protection to holders of Tepco’s bonds and keep its stock listed, but any reassurance to markets was overwhelmed by the suggestion that debt waivers could be ahead...

Hi all

***BREAKING NEWS***

Japanese Government Sources are now saying that Meltdown has occured in all three of the reactors.

http://e.nikkei.com/e/fr/tnks/Nni20110516D16JF903.htm

Their only solution to stoping a "China Sydrome" in Plants Two and Three is to continuously pump in water to try to prevent them from melting through their containment as is believed to have happened in Plant One, the containment in Plant One is known to be breached but how badly is not yet known.

The problems with this are where to store the ever increasing millions of gallons of highly radioactive water that can not go back in the Reactor for fear of it causing prompt criticality? So fresh water has to keep being pumped in to replace the tritium and deuterium saturated water.

Radioactive water is the cause of more leathal nuclear accidents than any other source and an excelent product for making and intiating Nuclear Bombs, so its storage and processing is highly regulated and controled but the vast amounts being created by these three probably continuously critical plants will eventualy overwhelm Japan.

Technically they should already be overwhelmed, they already ship their spent fuel all the way to North West England to be reprocessed or buried. It'll take some clever boffin to think up a way to magic away all of this new crap.

Hi all

Now Time magazine has started to get wind of a "China Sydrome" event at Fukushima and is carrying the story:

http://ecocentric.blogs.time.com/2011/05/16/was-fukushima-a-china-syndrome/

There has been a recent increase in the number of evacuation zone:

http://english.ntdtv.com/ntdtv_en/news_asia/2011-05-16/radiation-levels-force-additional-evacuations-in-fukushima-japan.html

I am wondering if the new evacuations due to increased radiation levels may be as a result of decay chain events?

...The amount of radiation being released can actually rise over time as successive radioactive decay products undergo decay...

http://www.epa.gov/rpdweb00/understand/chain.html

The Japanese Government, TEPCO and even the IAEA still have not produced an Isotope/Radionuclide assay for any of the FEZ.

A beggers belief that a country as advanced as Japan has not achived what was done in Chernobyl within weeks of the incedent.

What are they hiding?

Was the Plant three event a Plutonium excursion?

Or worse an actual nuclear explosion?

Hi all

More in the media are begining to smell the rot.

...1. There was a hydrogen explosion, and it was a detonation, not a deflagration -- in other words the fire burned up not burned down.

2. A frame-by-frame analysis shows a flame that confirms that the fuel pool is burning as a result of an explosion which started as a hydrogen explosion but that could not have lifted the fuel into the air so there must have been a violent explosion at the bottom of the fuel pool. But more data is needed.

3. Gunderson speaks about past criticalities in other nuclear reactors around the world, and I find it odd we are not hearing about these and how they can teach us about what is going on now at Fukushima.

4. Radioactive water is being pumped out and groundwater is contaminated, so there must be a leak or leaks, and this disaster is in no way contained. There will be contamination for a long time to come and this groundwater contamination is moving inland. One town is reporting radioactive sewage sludge from ground water or rainwater.

5. The Greenpeace ship Rainbow water has requested the Japanese government to test the waters near Japan, and Japan has refused this independent data request. The EPA has also shut down all inspection centers and is NOT inspecting fish. (Why the silence?)

Since Gunderson made this latest video, just a day or so ago new photo evidence seems to be showing burning and new fires taking place at Fukushima (from TBS JNN Japan): ...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/vivian-norris-de-montaigu/deadly-silence-on-fukushi_b_859241.html

As always follow the link to the original story in full

If it is fires at Reactor 3 then this explains the increase in the size of of FEZ.

Plutonium fires would render the area uninhabitable for milenia.

9CAeixB19d4

Meanwhile in the light of the total meltdown in one and possible all three reactors and warings from Greenpeace TEPCO has decided to review the water pumping policy:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/16/tepco-idUSL4E7GG3J120110516

If the reactors have melted down completly and are thus all unregulated recritical meltdown cores then pouring water on to them will increase neutron release and make them more reactive. That said if one or more has gone full scale "China Sydrome" then the core itself will eventualy reach water table resulting in mutiple massive explosions for an unknowable length of time.

The fear is of a machine gun like geyser of dirty radioactive water being regularly blasted into the atmosphere, while radioactivity polutes the surrounding water supply; and on out in to the Pacific for 100s of years, destroying the Pacific fisheries.

Hi all

It appears that it was the Quake and not the Tsunami that took out the cooling at the Fukushima plant raising suspicions that Japan and other western nations disaster prevention is not up to the level they have specified and that more of the industry may be at risk:

http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2011/05/megaquake-took-out-fukushimas.html

Fukashima is degenerating

Arnie Gundersen former Westinghouse Exec and Nuclear expert gives dim assessment indicating that Fukushima is degenerating:

Xqs-fh79suI

Two months after the event the IAEA is finally sending a team in to inspect Fukushima. This after the head of the IAEA brown trousered it because the radiation levels were so high.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/17/japan-nuclear-iaea-idUSLDE74G1B920110517

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703509104576328972813512228.html

The plunge in TEPCO shares is contaminating other Nuclear Industry shares who are all seeing massive sell offs as investors abandon ship.

Meanwhile the FEZ expansion continues as high levels of radition are found further and further from the plant:

J7Kxh1jsa0s

And over 150 schools have had to be closed and relocated since the disaster.http://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/quake-damage-nuclear-crisis-force-169-schools-to-relocate-or-close

Shockingly, as was mentioned by Arnie Gundersen, in some of the unclosed schools children must wear face masks and longsleaved shirts at all times outside, while the whole school yard is dug up and replaced as levels in the school yard would give the children the already raised dose for nuclear workers!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/02/parents-revolt-radiation-levels

As if their own gardens and other play areas, shops clubs and gymnasiums are not equaly iradiated.

Sorry to tell you numpties but the radiation levels aywhere near this school are going to be exactly the same.

Eg higher than is allowed by the recently raised nuclear worker standard.

Hi all

TEPCO has now admitted all three reactors in the Fukushima incident experienced Full Meltdown.

Tepco admits two more meltdowns

Temperature readings indicate melted cores are being cooled

By KAZUAKI NAGATA and MASAMI ITO

Staff writers

Tokyo Electric Power Co. admitted Tuesday what many experts had long suspected: The cores of reactors 2 and 3 at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant likely melted down and dropped to the bottom of their pressure vessels, just as happened at unit 1.

However, temperature readings taken in the two units, now ranging from about 100 to 110 degrees, suggest that most of the melted cores remain inside the pressure vessels and have been cooled by injected water.

"Although the simulation says that the melted cores would damage the pressure vessels if the water level was lower, we think the damage is limited considering the temperature data of the pressure vessels," Tepco spokesman Junichi Matsumoto said at a news conference.

"Most of the melted cores appear to be at the bottom of the pressure vessels, and we don't think there are any big holes" in the vessels, Matsumoto said.

However, the melted fuel may have damaged some parts of units 2 and 3, such as pipelines, he added...

My Own suspicions is that one or probably all the reactors have gone "China Syndrome". And that some or possibly all of the core is no longer in the containment.

Consider the temperature of what are now unregulated reactors that powered whole cities is now being cooled by a few swimming pools full of water. Normally masses of energy to power those cities would drawn out by a complex system of heat transfer systems that extract the energy and turn it into electricity and now none of that is working. Yet some how some static water is replacing this.

Err...

Examine your own gullibility in this matter.

I think it would be worth while doing the math on this one. IMHO This Running sore in the Nuclear Power industry may be about to get a whole lot worse. If one or more of the reactors has gone "China Syndrome" then its affects on the Japanese water table are likely to become very apparent in the next few months or even weeks.

Either way Japan is running out of places to store the radioactive water as I predicted a few posts back.

Greenpeace has slammed TEPCO for lying about radiation levels far worse than they have released:

And additional radiation leaks have been found in the waste water facility:

Super Typhoon Songda Projected To Pass Over Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant

So far the only good news to accompany the Fukushima catastrophe has been that for all the fallout, the radiation has been mostly contained due to Northwesterly winds which have been blowing any radioactivity mostly out and into the Pacific (coupled with relatively little rainfall), as well as the dispersion of irradiated cooling water which promptly enters the Pacific after which it is never heard of or seen again (there is at least a several year period before 3 eyed tuna fish feature prominently in restaurants across the country). This may be changing soon now that Super Typhoon Songda, which according to Weather Underground will form shortly as a Category 5 storm with 156+ mph winds, will take a northeasterly direction and 2 days later will pass right above Fukushima. The good news: by the time it passes over Fukushima it will be merely a Tropical storm. The bad news: by the time it passes over Fukushima it will be a Tropical storm. As the latest dispersion projection from ZAMG shows, over the next two days the I-131 plume will be covering all of the mainland. Although judging by how prominent this whole topic is in the MSM lately, it seems that conventional wisdom now agrees with Ann Coulter that radioactivity is actually quite good for you.

Hi all

There has been an explosion and oil spill at Fukushima.

http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110531-701810.html

I am still trying to get information on this.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/31/japan-nuclear-plant-explosion

This comes as workers have started reaching and passing the already raised Radiation limits.

http://mdn.mainichi.jp/mdnnews/news/20110530p2g00m0dm069000c.html

Former Nuclear workers are now saying that they regret ever working on Nuclear Power, as many of them begin to understand that they too were fooled by an industry that does not live up to its safety hype, and that they too were involved in promulgating the nuclear Hype.

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/T110530002543.htm

A pensioners team have volunteered to work on the plant as their age might mean that they would be dead anyways before radiation induced cancer could kill them.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13598607

Meanwhile rising radiation levels outside the plant are far in excess of allowed limits and are being found throughout the FEZ and outside it. The radiation exceed those at Chernobyl that made evacuation compulsory.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2011/05/30/bloomberg1376-LLZK0I1A74E901-0PV3MV8LDJ1DOTDCLS9HQ5EHL3.DTL

As I explained early on, the problem with monitoring at Fukushima is that it has primarily been air Gamma levels, not enough monitoring of the far more dangerous Beta and Alpha emitters has been made now that they are monitoring them, they are finding they are way in excess of what was predicted by TEPCO, the Japanese Government, the IAEA and the nuclear Industry. Not so surprisingly Greenpeace assessed this risk correctly.

The Nuclear industry continues to decline with Switzerland and Germany intending remove all nuclear installations, this amid increasing calls for an end to nuclear power in around the world, that is expected to be and election issue in several nations, even in France.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05-30/merkel-s-coalition-agrees-to-shut-all-of-germany-s-nuclear-plants-by-2022.html

Of more of a worry for the industry are increasing Tax payer calls for all costs of long term storage of nuclear waste to be put back on the industry and compulsory full cost insurance throughout the industry, with many uranium stocks falling like stones.

http://www.midasletter.com/index.php/uranium-stocks-under-seige-as-fukushima-continues-spewing-radiation-11053001/

Meanwhile in Europe there is confusion over the secret raising of emission limits in several countries and the EU post Fukushima both as to why the limits were raised and who was responsible and what effect the raising of the limits had on government monitoring statistics. In fact the situation was so shocking that the EU Ombudsman has instigated an investigation:

The government subsidies of the nuclear power industry are causing wide spread rebellion in conservative and incumbent political parties round the world. In Japan the government is facing a vote of No Confidence.

Silvio Berlusconi attempted to delay a Referendum on Nuclear Power but the courts thwarted him.

Now members of his own party are distancing them selves from him afraid they will be tainted with radioactive issue.

As a result Italy is expected to join the bandwagon of Germany and Switzerland in abandoning Nuclear power.

This comes as the Fukushima has started to run out of storage space for the millions of gallons of highly radioactive water it is producing every day in an attempt to keep its three meltdown reactors from going prompt critical. Tepco may have as little as 5 days left.

The problem is that Fukushima requires a swimming pool to be built every day to store its ever increasing radioactive water waste, with no end in sight. Latest estimates say the proposed long term cooling method wont work and the proposed treatment system was never designed to cope with this amount of highly irradiated water. Now several of the overworked pumping systems at the plant are startied to fail; with cooling in reactors and the irradiated Fuel pools of plants: 1, 2 and 5 all failing in the last 48hours.

With the current rate of failures TEPCO will probably have to start cannibalizing the pumps in other plants.

Additionally there are now concerns about the mental health of the workers at the plant.

No wonder the costs of the Nuclear Power plant are expected to dwarf those of Tsunami.

Hi all

There is a serious and no punches pulled assesment by IAEA now available here:

http://www.slideshare.net/iaea/summary-of-reactor-unit-status-2-june-2011

It makes stark and somewhat sobering assesment of where the plant stood as of yesterday.

Meanwhile odd things may be happening to the animals born in the area outside the FEZ:

***BREAKING NEWS***

There are now reports in the last hour that the water level inside Reactor 1 has suddenly plunged and they do not know where the water is going:

This is very worrying.
