Jachra 10 Posted March 5, 2011 I was curious about how possible it would be to do something at least remotely similar to traditional X-Com (albeit in ArmA 2 gameplay, obviously.) Specific elements include: A variable, open-ended campaign Persistant equipment and statuses 'Research' of captured equipment and interrogation of captured beings Psychic powers
Spartan 163 0 Posted March 5, 2011 There is a spot in the forums for request ie Addon Request thread. Please read the forum rules before posting.
Jachra 10 Posted March 5, 2011 I'm sorry, let me clarify: I'm not requesting this Addon, I'm asking about whether this is something that a modder would be able to do with some level of dedication. As in, I'm not asking whether it's possible for someone else to, I'm asking whether or not it's possible for me to do it if I took the time and effort - Specifically, with regard to the options I mentioned above. Or does that question belong in another forum?
Enigma85 2 Posted March 5, 2011 Basically yes. could face some hard graft and tricky problems however. Open ended campaign shouldn't be too hard. Persistence and research/interrogation might prove slightly harder. As for the psychic powers well. That might be a whole different kettle of fish, I'll let one of the scripting gurus attack that one :)
hellfire257 3 Posted March 5, 2011 Don't worry about it Jachra. From my point of view you are discussing ideas, which according to the top of the forum is allowed here.

icebreakr 3157 Posted March 5, 2011 Jachra, what did you have in mind? Something like this? ;) Hint: Arma is a playground and anything is possible ;)
dcal 16 Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) Jachra, what did you have in mind? Something like this? ;)Please do not quote images! Hint: Arma is a playground and anything is possible ;) Icebreakr, I can't wait for your visitor mod to come out. I have scenes for a video all planned out and already scripted in some parts. All it is missing are your visitors. Thanks for all the mods you make, we appreciate it:) Edited March 6, 2011 by W0lle
Jachra 10 Posted March 5, 2011 Buwahaha, IceBreakr, you magnificent bastard, that's awesome. Thanks for the input.
dialektiikka 10 Posted March 5, 2011 I suppose it might be possible to simulate some of the psychic powers from the original X-Com game(s) with scripted actions. They could also include some nice visuals, made with particle effects and such (re: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?p=1836065#post1836065 and maybe this too:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj6TJEyazO8). Also check the Stalker mod. Most important would be telepathically taking control of enemy units, which was a big thing in the X-Com endgame. Might be doable with some powerful scripting mojo. (Maybe it's just me, but this is starting to sound a lot like base speculation for a Men who stare at goats type mod, too :D ) As for interrogations etc. These might be possible with the current dialogue system, or maybe an alternate popup interface type thing. The tech research and development could utilize warfare mechanisms. The persistent weapon stores, inventory and character status transition from mission to mission might actually be harder. Hopefully someone can prove me wrong here. All in all, I can imagine it being possible. Which is not the same as it actually being such :o
Jachra 10 Posted March 6, 2011 The 'inbetween' stuff is fully as important as the in-mission stuff for X-Com. A big question: Simulate the passage of time with random events or have set branching trees? Or some other way to mimic a variable, open-ended campaign. max power 21 Posted March 7, 2011 This is true but if you do an X-Com themed project, it will have more focus on the first person infantry experience. By that gain, you might have to lose elsewhere. The infantry part will be quite rich so you will have to make the alien characters quite rich as well. The vtol aircraft you can do, definitely. If I can provide you with an opinion, I think you should plan to do a non-dynamic campaign focusing on the XCOM squaddies experience, and then see what stuff you can cobble together in the mean time. Just that 'mod' will take an obscenely long time to complete and a lot can happen in that time.
johncage 30 Posted March 7, 2011 Jachra, you joined this month, have 4 posts and I've not seen a single reference to your name or a similar name in all of OFP modding history. I'm not attacking you, but I am wondering who are you exactly and what are your credentials. As I am forced now to believe you are one of these dreaded "ideas guy" My reason for this is to determine whether this is a project I should put time in and see results, or something I should just ignore. Thank you.
