ha, thats the cheapest vidcard he has bought in years... the cost of two will be cheaper than his last topline card purchase.

I still have 480's, 6870 is not in my main rig.

I'll probably be going with 580s in December (if I upgrade at all). More likely I'll wait for Sandy bridge E and Kepler.

2 6870s cost the same as (or less) than 1 480 which is exceptional value. Their tesselation is still fairly weak compared to the 480s mind you, but again, that's more for those that 'play' benchmarks

Dont u think it will be a long time before we see sandybridge perform anything like the current top cards.

Nah, I just like my toys, I'm not about showing off at all mate.

The guy asked if anyone had experience with the 6870 and I do. I simply answered his question :)

No offense taken mate :D

Q6700 is still a decent CPU - nothing wrong with it.

indeed, still pretty close to phenomII's and such. for games i7's dont have such a big advantage over core2quads and phenom II's as in photo or video editing. only about 25% clock for clock I guess.

but pretty much offtopic, did you run the arma 2 benchmark missions?

Yah 37 - 41 mix of High/Vhigh @ 1920 x 1080 with post on low.

It's a decent little performer.

Hi,

I just bought an HIS 6870 a few days ago, because I've read here and there that the improvement was huge (for instance http://www.hardware.fr/articles/804-11/dossier-amd-radeon-hd-6870-6850.html, which reports 17FPS for a 5770 or 5830 vs 32FPS for a 6780 @ 1920x1200 AA8x).

Indeed it runs quite well, better actually than the XFX 4890 I used before. However, the difference isn't that huge: when playing in the main city on Zargabad island, I can notice a slight improvement (high textures and complex models appear faster when I turn around, between 1-2 sec instead of 2-4 sec). But there still are some slowdowns when playing downtown with a Mi-24, a tank and three infantry groups for example.

The BIS A2 benchmark missions show 30FPS and 15FPS with the 6870, instead of 28FPS and 12FPS with the 4890...

My config and settings:

Core2Duo Conroe E6850 @ 3GHz (FSB 1333)

ASRock G43ME

2x2Gb DDR2 800 MHz

HIS 6870 1GB

View distance: 3000m at 1440x900

Texture detail: high

Video memory: very high

Anisotropic filtering: high

Antialiasing: high

Terrain detail: high

Objects detail: very high

Shadow detail: very high

Postprocess effects: disabled

Was it worth buying this new card? At east, it's not as expensive as the 5870 :p

Thanks BIS for this really great game (and for OFP and A1 which I played when I was younger )

I have a HD6850. The game runs a little faster than with my old 8800GT, but the difference is not that big, the game still sucks in villages, towns or big battles. And there are some LOD improvements, I think it's because of more vram, for example better looking textures or objects appear faster.

what you describe as "sucks" is almost all CPU power, and most likely to much screen rez for your card.

schroeder has a nice templet for a single one GB card.

I know a couple people that upgraded the same card (or even better) to the 6xxx series cards and their performance improved 2x or even more. Something else in your system like your CPU might be bottle-necking

Hmm bis can optimise and tweak the game forever, i think they should look at the game assets instead.. the buildings are what hurt frame rates the most.

My CPU is a Q6600@3,2Ghz. With settings on normal/high and 1680x1050 I get in benchmark 1 about 60fps, benchmark 2 about 22fps and OA benchmark 60fps. But it's still not enough for a completely smooth gameplay and I think it wont be with up to date hardware for the next 3-5 years.

Yep, in other games like Bad Company 2 I get 2x more performance, but not in Arma 2.

I think birtuma is right. It was about the same with Armed Assault, which ran fine when I upgraded from a C2D 2Ghz+8800gt (normal, 2000m) to C2D 3Ghz+4890 (very high, 5000m). I thought C2D 3Ghz+6870 would be enough for A2... :(

Please don't compare Arma 2 to BC2, they are very different in terms of their demands on hardware.

Buildings do seem to have a very adverse affect on FPS and this is an area that needs a lot of optimization. I suspect that it contributes to a great deal of performance related problems.

and ( if i may ask) can you use the new MLAA?

The new MLAA Function is included in ATI Catalyst 10.10c Hotfix Driver

Maybe someone could try and compare with MSAA and SSAA

AMD Catalyst 10.10c Hotfix Features:

â– OpenGL 4.1 beta support

â– Support for the new Morphological Anti-Aliasing feature

■Dead Rising 2 – Crossfire profile (Resolves negative scaling)

â– Crossfire Performance Improvement for:

â—¦Metro 2033

â—¦F1 2011 - (Direct X9 version)

â—¦Fallout New Vegas

â– Performance optimizations for systems with an AMD Radeonâ„¢ HD 6870 and AMD Radeon HD 6850 series of graphics products installed

â—¦Aliens versus Predator performance enhancements

â—¦Star Craft 2 performance enhancements

◦OpenGL performance enhancements – gains can be seen in Prey, Quake Wars: Enemy Territories, and Heaven v2

â– Support for additional Stereo 3D-capable displays:
