midrange terrain texture replacement
SirJD replied to bad benson's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Thanks for that Bad Benson - I messed with a few variations yesterday and settled on Medium. Just enough added detail without making the scenery overly-dark. Thanks again for your work - brilliant stuff :) -
Thanks for the clarification :)

So just to confirm - should those of us running 64Bit versions of Windows bother with any of these adjustments? ArmA3 hits 2GB memory usage for me and tops out about there. Derpy question is likely derpy :P

396MB update just wrapped up - anyone else?

midrange terrain texture replacement
SirJD replied to bad benson's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Just thought I'd check - I've tried running Sharp 1 and found it a touch too sharp for my liking (Though still a massive improvement over default). Are the other options - Orig, Orig2, Medium, and Lite - less intense versions of Sharp 1, or are they alterations of the default map textures? Thanks! -
Would also agree with you Varanon - read through that update pondering how I'd love to see those changes implemented on players, as well. Love A3's smooth movement, but that doesn't mean we can't have a few balances in terms of movement/aiming speed depending on weapon types. Especially prone!

Terrain Improvement (dev branch)

Agreed! It's actually been really great to see this develop over time. Hopefully there's some fantastic end results because of it :) -

Fantastic to hear from the Devs in this thread :) Curiousity on my part - is the current mid-range texture situation by-and-large accepted: i.e "We've done the best we can with the limitations we have". Or is this something you're continuing to look into? -

Would love to see this happen in an official sense - not a knock against your work - but so that we might see it as a part of the base game/widely used. That, and it would likely be completed that much quicker too! Is there any noticeable performance hit when using the new textures, vs the old, default mid-range textures? -
Definitely. It's hard to move over to something new given how nostalgic Chernarus is to me at this point. Love the claustrophobia of those forests :)

Also note that it is listed as the final public patch. The Dev build will still be receiving updates from here until release - as well as post release. Whether at the same pace, that's another matter. The Devs have mentioned a more irregular update schedule with less sweeping changes, given the game is moving into those final crunch weeks before release. Also, in regards to Altis, I posted on that earlier in the thread with specifics. Might still be handy

On the topic of Altis - this is the direct quote from the most recent livestream: "...just to get it out there, you know, a little bit before launch would be really useful. We'd be looking maybe sometime around Gamescom to get this into the Dev Branch players' hands" The important part there is around Gamescom. As far as exact timing goes, it's kind of just speculation at this point. My thoughts? BiS have been releasing larger content updates on the Dev branch on Fridays, through Alpha and Beta. Pre-Gamescom seems a little too soon, given the Drone/UAV update only just went live and pre-Gamescom preparations would be in full swing. If we follow the Friday thing, that would be the 24th, though that's mid-Gamescom. A "We're here at Gamescom and you can play this stuff we're showing right now!" would be a neat way to unveil it, but unlikely in my eyes given you'd likely want some free airtime around the "Altis coming to Dev Branch" announcement. Given Gamescom wraps up on the 25th, I'd say we're more likely to see it the Friday after next - 1st of September. Leave next week to Gamescom coverage, hint at "...something might be coming sooooonnn *wink*" and then pull the curtain back when they have all team members available/a less busy press news cycle.

Thought I'd throw a few questions in the mix for the livestream: Is there any Official/Dev response to the Mid-Range Texture discussion? It feels like one of the only areas where there hasn't been any official response either way - Whether that's a "We're happy with it/We think it needs work/We're working on it"? Is there still a possibility that Altis might make a slightly early appearance on the Dev branch? Are there any plans to expand ArmA3's Steam Workshop integration past missions, and into mod areas like weapons/factions etc?
