  1. Sounds like it's the size of the UDP packets. It shouldn't have much of an impact on performance. You could try a value of 512, which is your typical UDP payload size. To answer your questions though: 1. 256 2. There's not really a "correct" setting per se. I wouldn't exceed a payload of 512 bytes though as it really shouldn't be needed and depending on the route it takes and how many headers are tacked on, it could cause the packet to fragment which would make it more susceptible to packet loss. 3. As long as you don't exceed the MTU of your network interface, the amount of servers you run shouldn't matter. 4. It would probably be more dependent on the amount of moving entities in whatever mission you are playing rather than it being a PVP or COOP mission. I guess you could err on the side of COOP since it's bound to have more active units. 5. Don't think it would be a large factor. Theoretically, the larger the payload size, the less packets you would have to send for the equivalent amount of data to each player. 6. Honestly I don't think it's something you would need to benchmark. It's one of those things that's a very small tweak that has more of a placebo effect than anything. 7. No clue

    Sniper Rifle without scope

Disable any mods you have enabled and try them all one by one until you find which one is causing the problem. I think it's an issue with certain weapon mods that hacked the ability to use addon scopes on vanilla weapons.
  3. ^ It really does need to be implemented, especially considering how large Altis is going to be. I mean if the functionality is there and you can "fudge" it, Why not just implement the fudged way into the menu and then work on it when there are less pressing things to deal with? It's been one of my pet peeves in most of the missions I have made.

    Arma 3 - Pre-E3 Livestream Hangouts

Remind me never to post when I'm tired. ---------- Post added at 19:46 ---------- Previous post was at 19:42 ---------- Are you streaming through a separate capture card or just software capturing?

Will AI in ArmA 3 Be Expanded?

I think if you give him a move command or tell him to return to formation he stops watching the assigned direction.

    Arma 3 - Pre-E3 Livestream Hangouts

It would be 279km from east coast to west coast at the "widest" part, hence the 279km². And yes ArmA 3 is definitely a huge step up in graphic fidelity.
  7. I was just explaining what the optimization they did meant. I wasn't complaining about it. Thank you though for the advice.
  8. It was a 60% increase to LOD loading, not the popping issue. For instance, stand about 500-600 meters from Agia Marina and then switch to an optic and see how long it takes for the LOD's to switch from low to high. I would also like to know what optimizations they are aiming for as well though.
  9. Agree'd. Until they implement a multithreaded scripting environment, more cores will never be better than pure speed.
  10. I knew thermal was in, I didn't know they had the 2 different modes simulated.

    ARMA III & Steam WORKSHOP

I understand why addon makers are so up in arms about the Steam Workshop and I don't disagree with them on the aspect of the licensing and giving up their IP rights or creating a grey area for it.. I understand more of the issue to do with someone uploading an addon to the Steam Workshop without the makers consent. To me, that seems to be the most serious issue. The only way I could see to alleviate it would be to have someone check every addon that gets added to the Workshop, a proactive approach instead of a reactive one. Possibly BI could work something out with Steam about that, anything is possible really. As far as Steam Workshop killing off Armaholic and Ofpec type sites, I don't see it happening unless a large portion of the community adopts the Steam Workshop as the defacto mod/addon hub. I think more or less, the Steam Workshop could introduce members from outside this forum who own the game about the possibilities that can be accomplished with this game. I also think that it's a much easier accessed and less obtrusive method of content distribution because it's integrated with the platform that you use to play the game. I think that is the overall goal of BI for including support for this.

    ARMA III & Steam WORKSHOP

I'm not looking for anything, it's just how you come across. Judging from responses I might not be the only one. I understand your cost to run a community site perspective. It's still up to the community to decide what it is that they prefer and what they want. They will do that by utilizing the service that best gives them what they want the most. I.E. If people found Armaholic to be easier to use and navigate and can find what they want and if addon and mod makers continue to use Armaholic, then Steamworks really poses no threat. However if people find that Steamworks has what they want and addon/mod makers begin to use Steamworks for publishing, then perhaps it will pose a threat to sites like Armaholic. Also how would a community become more impersonal through Steamworks? For the most part, Steamworks consists of literally everything that say Armaholic consists of for instance. There's forums for each game, there's comment sections for every mission/addon/mod etc... Aside from design layouts and general UI elements, which will differ from site to site anyways, the core of both services are literally the same. How do you see it making the community more impersonal? The only thing that can make this community more impersonal is the community itself. You've got members who judge other members based on forum join dates and post counts and whether or not they've released mods and they get instant rock star status and the moderators that let it go on. Ostracizing newer members on the basis of "I don't agree with you, Oh look you joined yesterday and your post count is 1 trolololol/Rage of the gods" etc... Your basic ole boys club syndrome. Yet somehow we're worried that another service, which doesn't happen to be a part of the good ole boys/elitist crowd by the way, is going to ruin that good community feeling or make it impersonal . I'm also not saying you are anti Steam or anti Valve. I'm just saying that it's hard for someone as rooted into the current community as you are with as many ties to it, to be objectionable about something that could possibly negatively affect specific members of the community for the greater good of the overall community, even those outside of these forums.

    ARMA III & Steam WORKSHOP

Is your point to criticize those making use of mods or the opposition of Steamworks? I'm having a hard time telling. My question is, why would Armaholic or a similar community site go under because you can now share missions and mods on Steam? Is it because of ease of access and more exposure to a wider audience? A more stable and quicker access avenue? I mean I really don't see how it would hurt community sites like Armaholic, unless the community themselves adopt it as a new standard of releasing and acquiring missions and addons. If it does somehow put community sites out of business in a sense, I hate to say it but that's business and that's life. Generally if something better comes along and the majority adopts it, all the competition has to find a way to stay competitive. Again it all rely's on the community itself and what they find better and what they need.
  14. I kind of thought they were a little fast, The .408 especially.
  15. Apparently they added white hot and black hot thermal modes. If you go into the splendid camera and switch through the vision modes with N there's now white hot and black hot. Not sure if this is going to apply to thermal sight's and thermal optics on vehicles but it would definitely be nice :).

    ARMA III & Steam WORKSHOP

That last part is key. Whether it be discussion about performance, modders, addons, criticism/praise or really anything. I've seen arguments that because your post count isn't high or your join date isn't very old, somehow you're seen as less of a member or your viewpoints no matter how valid are null simply because of those facts. That's elitism at it's very core.

    Arma 3 - Pre-E3 Livestream Hangouts

I enjoyed it quite a bit. You did a good job of showing off new beta content and still keeping to the point of designing a mission and showing how to use the editor. The independent faction looks pretty cool and I do really like the 3D scopes. I had a question about the feasibility of Render to Texture scopes for sniper rifles and high zoom scopes and if you think it would be doable or not, but I couldn't tell if it got answered cause the chat was moving so fast. Also would you leave the ability to implement it open for modders?
  19. So the sound engine is capable of real time filtering and effects now? Do you plan on using things like Reverb, Occlusion, Echo, etc.. for shaping gunfire sound effects in real time based on environment?
  20. A 6mm is literally a .22 FYI. Far cry from a 9mm or a .40/.45.
  21. Agia Marina and the Airbase I would think. I generally have texture's set to Ultra as there's almost no performance difference between the settings. *edit* Just tried switching between low and ultra and ultra disappeared and I was left with Very High. For once I was also hitting 1.3gb of GPU Memory used.
  22. I've seen this happen with my GTX 480 1.5gb. I will start out around 880mb of GPU RAM usage and it will climb up to 1.1-1.2gb where it will just hover.
  23. The only thing you can really do is wait. Most of the performance issue's are known and this is an Alpha. The biggest things that affect FPS are view distance and object draw distance as well as object detail and terrain detail. Hopefully they can work on performance optimizations throughout the beta.

    Firecracker Sound Effects

For some reason, all of the BI sounds sound like they were recorded through a really thick sock, like they lost all their tone and definition. The gun sounds themselves are spot on to their real life counter-parts, but they have no definition to them, no sense of the environment that they are being used in. That's what most sound mods do, they try to re-institute a sort of sense of environment through the samples. It really needs to be done through the sound engine on the fly, rather than in the prerecorded sample. I'm hoping that since they switched to Xaudio, they can do something like this.
  25. The sites work pretty good. Are there any configs for altering the dynamic patrols within the site and such? I've noticed that there is usually only 1 patrol.
