    Warfare BE

Anyone else apart from fredkatz working on Warfare saving game state to a persistent database ? It's slooooow going here and I need some moral raising. I got fed up with mySQL in Windows, just did not like the setup, plus it has all sorts of services and apps that are going to add load to Windows. It's not too bad if you are running the server on a dedicated machine, but I am running both server and client on my 4 core cpu. So I imported the Arma2Net database into Linux mySQL ... Windows Arma2Net should be able to access this Linux database over my local LAN. However I can't test that yet because I can't get Warfare to start properly. I always get this ... http://files.djbarney.org/arma2oa%202013-10-27%2021-17-37-11.jpg (288 kB) Notice the lack of Warfare menu items. Now, I remember getting this once when editing Warfare scripts to reduce AI units. I think I made a typo that I missed and got something similar to the screen above. But as far as I know the Arma2Net version of Warfare 073 is OK. I checked all the add-ons were loading and in the correct sequence. I also have the configuration options for 073 in the server config file. Any ideas ?

I also hope updates will continue for ArmA2 as Bohemia are still releasing BETA's for it and it will (presumably, as I don't run a internet MP server) stay well established in the server lists. Kavoriken put it well ... I managed to move to 073 as I convinced myself to play in Takistan :) ... much improved performance and no crashes. ArmA goes esquisitly over the top with all the funds and starting funds levels maxed out :D ... But I miss my other maps. How do I do map conversions ? Is it as simple as copying across town names and X/Y/Z ? Or is it more complicated ?
  3. As far as I understand it the HC only makes sense for servers with lots of human players (I saw 100+ quoted) in them. If its only an SP (one player) game the HC performance is probably going to be effectively the same as running a client/server. It also sounds to me a bit like a temporary solution until Bohemia master AI optimisations on the server.
  4. See my sig for a guide. See performance section. I was just playing Warfare BE with full funds. There were a lot of units on the map. Heli's, jets, everything. I was getting around 20 to 30fps, average around 26. Pretty good for a Vista/Q6600 CPU/Nvidia 9800 machine. I have shadows turned off and everything set to minimum/low. I find as long as the frame rate is high enough everthing looks detailed anyway, there's nothing worse than high settings with a low frame rate, don't be afraid to turn everything down.. Dynamic View Distance is a must. I'm not sure about using multiple AI scripts as they may conflict with one another, although I could be wrong about this. Anyway, I have found AI performance acceptable with just ASR AI Addons. Getting the right addon is important as there are addons with similar names and different versions. I am running on a quad core CPU using 2 cores for a dedicated server and the other two for the client on the same machine (set affinity in the task manager). That is essential to get ArmA to thread everything properly for the AI (see guide).

OK, thanks. Still with 071 just for Duala. I might fix up Duala for 073 one day. Has anyone played with Starting Supply and Starting Funds maxed out ? I did this and everything goes berserk, I mean really BERSERK !!! :292:The game stayed at a good framerate as well; using the latest beta with no occupation, no resistance and some units removed in initJIPCompatible.sqf, no shadows, using @DVD and @ASR_AI. At one point I think I got a script or exe bug error in the client because it went down to <=8fps. Thought my game had had it, but I restarted the client and my frame rate was back up. So I carried on with the action, lots of heli's, jets, tanks. Madness really.

Great fredkatz ! Something that's been keeping me from 073 is the lack of map support. I'd love to try your latest release. I have a Linux system here so can try linking it to a Linux DB over my local LAN. Was thinking that having the DB installed on Windows might effect performace but not sure how much of an issue that is as Vista is supposed to suspend all background tasks when a game is running. The only thing that is keeping me with 071 is Duala, but I can switch to Dingor, Jadegroove, MBG Celle 2 or Reshmaan Province. I have been assuming better AI performance for 071. How is the AI performance on 073 ?

Of course. You posted about this here. I remember now. I had forgotten. Have some RL "issues" going on here, one of the reasons I came back to ArmA. I'm gonna get your work going, because even with hibernation and process suspension the ArmA server takes up way too much memory to be able to run other games. Is the DL in the link still current ?

Did anyone ever get the persistent database scripts working ? I can suspend my server process (using pstools) but I can't get Vista to hibernate.

I have also found problems with finding a CLEAR guide or tutorial that explains exactly what this does and how to install it.
  10. This game caught my eye a few months ago but I only managed to play the demo yesterday. I was impressed by the game play and immediately bought it on Steam. The intro movie hits all the right notes for me. Especially the use of rarely heard accents in the English voice acting which has a great European / UK Northern feel to it. Congratulations to Bohemia for having the courage to not go with the usual voice acting style ! Judging by the demo Bohemia have given us a strategy/tactics focused game which also has the knock about fun of games such as Battlefield 2142. In fact that's what it immediately reminded me of (never having played the original Carrier Command). The island hopping strategy and use of carriers is something I've been interested in implementing in ArmA Warfare. I think the Hell in the Pacific mods has made a island hopping mission but I've not checked their latest release yet. So it's gonna be interesting seeing how you Bohemia developers have done this kind of thing in Carrier Command . I'll post here with my full review when I've played some of the full game.

I'm getting excited :). So are you referring to being able to make this release work with any map, in my case Isla Duala ? Is this easy to do ? If not then I'd like to request Isla Duala support from you or another forum member.

ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues

People. It's not always a software problem. I recently discovered that my PSU was not supplying enough power to my video card (its recommended Amps). I replaced my PSU with a high quality OCZ PSU matched to the video card rating. More so, its not just the amount of power but the QUALITY of that power. PSU's are tested with an oscilloscope to check the quality of the frequency wave form produced by the PSU.

It only works with Vista. AFAIK XP does not have the capability to use the suspend process command. Vista also has a completely revamped memory and process handling architecture (carried through to Win 7 as well) which should improve memory handling for the server. That would be nice. It may be possible to attract GUI coders who want to show off their skills :moto:

    Diving Under Water

Very slick. Like something from a James Bond film. I think Ian Fleming worked for Underwater Demolition Teams in WW2 which is where the concept of the SDV started. Is there a canopy that closes over the cockpit ? I notice the circular features in the cockpit that look like instrumentation, although I don't think the SDV is a pressurised vehicle. The video got my imagination going. Can ArmA 2 have underwater buildings with pressurised insides, like a moon pool for example? Either way there's plenty of room for missions here.

    Isla Duala

I've found 0.71 to be the best optimised for Duala, but this may vary per setup. Here is the WFBE official thread. A more up to date release with Duala support and optimised AI is pending.

Thanks for this. I've had this problem with ArmA hogging my machine on long WFBE games. I was hibernating XP which the server does go along with and behaves OK when its come out of hibernation (BTW many complex pieces of software don't) but that left me with a machine I was unable to do anything else on. This technique is also great for WFBE as it involves extended game play. Hopefully the ability to do this will attract more players - both SP and MP as I don't see why the server should not be OK for MP as well after pausing. I suspect the same technique could be used with the Linux server.

ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues

Just thought I'd put this here as some general advice. I upgraded to Vista. Vista should be recommended as essential for something like ArmA as it has a completely different model in the OS for handling memory, drivers and hardware. I did not realise until I looked into Vista (beyond the "lol vista" silliness) and found what a fundamental advance it is over XP. There are also a lot of misunderstandings about game performance on PC's, especially when it comes to something as system testing as ArmA. People often don't want to hear this advice as they want it to be easy (hey, I'm the same!) and just want to flick a few settings to make things better. But that rarely works unless you have already ironed out the problems in your system. I suggest reading Tweakguides, especially the Tweaking Companion (this is not an advert BTW) as I highly rate this fellow Koroush Ghazi. It's not for everyone as he is saying something that sadly, many PC users just don't want to hear. You will also hear truths about PC troubleshooting that some can't handle ... "you can't handle the truth!". But he won't feed you a line of useless lies about "fixing your PC" that the net is full of. The bottom line is that a PC is like a customised racing rig (the "fast and the furious", eh?). A PC is not really a turn key solution like a family saloon. The user has to get under the "hood" and get their hands dirty. It is essential to do this is you want to compete in the high speed race that is ArmA.

    Warfare BE

Yes ! , thanks Kawa ! That's it ! I think I looked at this when I was using WinXP which if I remember correctly cannot do it. However with Vista, which has a very different process handling model, this should work. I'll test this soon.

Hello. Just can't remember where I saw this but in my search for a way to save my server game I remember mention of the server being able to respond to a special system process "halt" command leaving it in a paused state until it can be resumed. I think this only works in Windows Vista. Anyone remember this ?

    Islands, Ships and Docks

Thanks for that. I just had the mother of all hardware problems. But I have a new PSU now and Vista which looks a lot better for ArmA performance. So gonna get this ship spawning thing going sometime in 2013. Watch the seas.
  21. Are docks on island maps coded like airports ? In Warfare BE when I build a C130 it appears at an airport and goes straight into taxiing and then take off. I'd like to add ships that follow a similar behaviour. When one is built it would appear at the nearest dock (or whatever predefined one as is done with airports). It might then cast off and start "taxiing" out of port into a patrolling pattern - as aircraft do from airports. Using the "disembark" command would work the same as with aircraft - the ship would dock at the port wharf where the disembark command was given. Is any of this actually coded into Arma ? Warfare BE commonly spawns the smaller ships on land near the coast then the ships slides (or there is the "push" command) into the water. This is fine for the smaller ships but larger one's are going to look might funny spawning in the middle of a base. I think I'm correct with the comparison with aircraft/airport operation. Any pointers in the right direction ?.

    Warfare BE

I did not have time to take a proper look at that. I'm not understanding yet what is the mechanism for ArmA2 to save all its data. Does it have a mechanism to save everything - the same one that is used to save a client only game ? Or does there have to be code written for every savable item ? If that is the case then it would be enough to code for town states and location + loadout of units. But what about bases that have been built ? There must innumerable little things that need to be saved to make a game worth continuing. I'm seeing a lot of mods out there using ArmA2net and the SQL plugin (DayZ for example). Might there not be a common method for doing all this ? Using CBA for example ? As to Linux, I know it makes sense on my setup to be connecting to a Linux DB but I'm not sure if this is true for everyone.

Hey, wow. Reminds me of the caves on one of the Jap Battlegroup42 maps.

Later versions don't have support for all the islands. As was already said, this is probably due to insufficient system resources. You should be running using a server and client. Yes, as was said, this is probably your problem. WFBE needs to be run on the dedicated server with client connecting to it. This can be done on the same machine as long as you have at least 2 cores (see link above). Of course then you can only save by hibernating the computer. The server is actually very stable going into hibernation ... many other realtime applications just crash if they are hibernated. I'm currently testing a way to save games on a dedicated server by using an SQL server link.
