    An observation about tanks.

Err...ever heard of Steel Beasts Pro? :p Properly modeling tank combat does not cripple the CPU.:)

Anyone else sticking with Arma 1?

From what I've been reading on this forum it seems to be all BIS need to do to make it less hardcore, is tweak the AI spotting routines. I know you can reduce AI accuracy yourself but that is only a half fix and doesn't apply when you go on a MP surver (unless they have modded AI accuracy as well). I would find being shot at and not knowing where from fine, as long as the AI had the same problem too.

    I'm Now 100% Onboard With ArmA 2

That's how I like my mission - small cog in a big war. I hate all the sneaking around everything depends on me missions. Simulate me in a big battle - that's what i like! Looks amazing!
  4. Neither is the real thing!Haha!;)
  5. I'm a 4GB RAM(=~3.25Gb), Vista 8800 GTX user and suffer from lock ups in menus and editor. In game is fine, but I can forget about using the editor or woe on me if I spend to long tinkering with my key configuration. I am seriously considering adding an XP dual instal to see if it works better, but seeing as how many other vista users in this thread don't seem to have these problems and ArmA2 release is in sight it seems a bit much.
  6. I should have pre-ordered while i had the chance - now its £24.99!!!! Also, i saw a full page advert for ArmA2 in PCFormat today and it said the release date was 19.06.09.
  7. I'm looking to join/play regularly with an 'older' group being 30+ myself. I think I'll check out TG, but being based in the UK I guess timezones and ping could be a problem.
  8. £36.99 - Steam are having a laugh! You'd have to try real hard to find a more extortionate price!:j:
  9. Good post - very succinctly put. :ok:

    Windage and bullet weight

Indeed this is true. There was recent a news item in the UK (here) about a soldier who was shot it the head by an AK-47 but fortunately the round missed his skull by milimeters as it passed through his helmet. Although much was made of his good fortune at not being killed, no one seemed suprised that the helmet failed to stop the round penetrating his helmet on entry and exit. The conclusion one must draw from this is the helmets used in the Britsh army (which I believe are made of the same materials as other western armies' helemts) are not designed to stop high velocity rounds (even though on occasions they actually might).
  11. Nice, thanks for translating that!

    Is ArmA better than OFP?

For me OFP was a better game than ArmA for several reasons: 1) Better missions and campaigns in OFP and expansions 2) Relatively simple graphics of OFP matched the gameplay and AI. ArmA upgraded the graphics but the gameplay remained the same. This meant the experience (for me) was inferior. A more realistic environment demands more realistically interacting elements. However, having said all that, I play ArmA and not OFP, so maybe I should have voted ArmA is the better game.
  13. Just saw this release! Wow! I can't wait to download it [suddenly becomes overwhelmed by waves of nostalga]! Question: does it contain the mission that was in the demo? I think it was called 'Ambush'. I must have replayed that mission, literally, dozens of times - I think it was the most enjoyable SP mission I've ever played, probably because the realism and freedom of OFP was so revolutionary it just blew me away. Happy days!:D

    Ai thread

The key thing I think the AI need - more than anything - is a sense of preservation for themselves and their squadmates. Suppression & morale should be moddeled in the baseline game and not left for modders to script. IMO this is and has always been, the single biggest AI flaw since OFP, everything else is gravy! ;)

ArmA Franchises's Needs: A Practical Look

Good post - my thoughts on many matters exactly. With this principle I was expecting you talk about the performance advantage that can be had by not simulating everything individually if it is located away from what the player(s) are currently experiencing (as done in Falcon 4 using the 'player bubble' method).
  16. Tested: basically can play stock queens gambit campaign. 7 times out of 10 loads fine, 3 times out of ten will either hang in a menu or gear view, or I'll get a driver not responding and need to reboot. If I try the mission editor it will lock up on a menu everytime sooner or later. Tried playing with ACES mod - again will always lock up on a menu sooner or later. I guess its avoid using menus wherever possible! Hope to have better luck with ArmA2 - thank the lord it is not far away!:o

    Royal flush...camp mission

Funny, months ago I when I first played this mission I had the exact same problem so gave up on the campaign. On Sunday I started the campaign again and when I got to this mission it worked. I think when I first played it I probably didn't use the radio to tell them to get on the trucks or to move out when they were loaded.

    ArmA: Queens Gambit Campaigns

First time I played this mission they got like a 5 minute head start so I had no idea where they were. Eventaully just followed the tracks and roads down to the sea and there they were - the route kinda 'flows' and I don't think there were any turn offs. Anyways, when I got to the bottom on this attempt they had disenbarked and shot the crap out of us as we approched there empty jeep! Lol! :p

ArmA Editing Guide - English Version

Hey, I just downloaded the ArmA editing guide but am I right in finding that it doesn't contain a list of WP behaviours (i.e. guard)? Is there another guide I should be looking at for this information?
  21. Stock Nvidia 8800GTX. Sorry about not replying sooner. :) Also, using 182.50 drivers. Update: am now having intermitant problem - on a couple of occasions the Nvidia driver has stopped responding and screen alternates between blank and normal. Will get some more info when can test at the weekend.
  22. Just wanted to drop in and give feedback on Beta 1.16. I had just reinstalled and patched upto 1.14 and was having lots of problems with the game freezing whenever I went in to a menu. Since installing the 1.16 patch I've had no problems (even though the menus are still laggy and slow) and frame rates seem much improved. I'm suspectng the lack of freezes in menus is due to the improved memory handling.

    Memory

Just buy two more 1GB sticks. Â Although 1GB of it will be invisible, you'll still get dual channel performance, it doesn't cost much more than one stick and you'll get the 1GB back when we all go 64bit. Â Specs: Vista 32bit 8800GTX (169.28-beta) 4GB RAM (3GB visable) E6600@2.7Ghz

Freezing for 2 seconds while ingame

Just to provide additional feedback on this thread: I was having the problem with the 1 - 2 second freezes until I updated my 8800GTX's drivers from 169.01 to the 169.28 beta. Â The freezes are now completely eliminated but I can 't use Dual View anymore without the driver locking up my computer. Â Haven't tried the WHQL 169.25s yet as an earlier post seems to indicate it may not be worth my time. Â Anyway, I can live with one monitor until these drivers go non-beta. Specs: Vista 32bit 4GB RAM (3GB visable) 8800GTX (169.28 - beta) Core 2 Duo E6600@2.7Ghz
