Wobble 1 Posted April 24, 2002 Today when I was in class and suddenly my GF shows up at the door with this wierd look on her face.. and asks to see me. As soon as were in the hall she starts crying.. HARD it turns out the persian kitten I bought us her ( "ziggy" ) a little over a year ago for her birthday got hit by a car... and she saw it happen I dont know how many of you have cats but she was REALLY attached to it.. now she is pretty well freaked out.. I still havent heard what happened because every time she even tries to start telling me she starts crying.. so i have a question.. should I buy her a new kitten NOW.. or wait a while.. on one hand getting one now might ease her grief.. but it also might remind her of ziggy and just make her more sad.. so.. what do I do? wait a few weeks and then get her one.. or get one tommorrow? its really depressing.. ziggy was probably the most entertaining cat ever.. he was the only cat I ever seen that like going swimming.. Guest Posted April 24, 2002 I think that you should wait until buying a new cat. It is not at all sure that your GF will appriciate that you buy a new one, and might think that you didn't care about ziggy. I think that you will have to wait this one out and let time do its healing, there is no simple solution.
timmy 0 Posted April 24, 2002 hmmm , thats a hard one, but if it were me id wait a week or two and then suprise her with one.
ChickenHawk 0 Posted April 24, 2002 Sorry to hear that I'm a big cat fan myself, I have 4. My sister experianced the same kind of thing when her cat got hit by a car, the guy was so nice he didnt even stop.. IMHO I wouldnt buy another cat straight away, give it a few days, maybe a week. Then suprise her by having the cat in the house so she see's it when she comes in.
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted April 24, 2002 Dont buy her a new kitten right now, that would be the most insenstive thing you could do. It is like total capitalistic approach: "you can even buy a new life if you lost one!", that would about be the message. The girl would propably say: "oh if I get hit by a car are you gonna get a new girlfriend the next day too?" First I would get this cat under earth, if you do that for her, she would probably appreciate it!
Antichrist 0 Posted April 24, 2002 Get her a dog instead
GFX707 0 Posted April 24, 2002 buy her another cat, then bludgeon it to death with a hammer in front of her and force feed bits of it to her that will surely get her mind off the first one
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted April 24, 2002 Wait awhile, and do one of those romantic surprise things you always see on tv... and get her a new kitten, or maybe a dog. I like em all
GFX707 0 Posted April 24, 2002 and then set her on fire

Wobble 1 Posted April 24, 2002 yea.. or assholes.. but I wont split hairs I guess Ill wait, it will give me time to pick the perfect one out too..
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted April 24, 2002 Both of my cats are mutts (I guess you call em that), they were both strays. If you can get em when they are kittens, and healthy, strays make the best cats.
Joe Porta 0 Posted April 24, 2002 Take it to the Pet cemetary up near Castle rock in Maine and bury it in the old Indian ruins. It'll come back as good as new but a tad psychotic.

I suggest wait till some day when she's in a good mood again and busy with something else. Then give her a (different looking) cat, maybe with a red ribbon! ralphwiggum 6 Posted April 24, 2002 give her some time...like 3 months or so.....she saw her cat ran over like Hilandor running over teammates...that's quite traumatic.... if i suggest, after mourning period is over, get her a new kitten, but with different breed. if she gets same breed(persian) she will be reminded of her first one again..... kinda sympathizing with your gf since my sister's cat is not well this week... Longinius 1 Posted April 24, 2002 Honestly, get her a dog. If she doesnt want a dog, get her an indoors cat. The problem with cats in densely populated areas is that they tend to get run over sooner or later. It has happened to one of my cats many years ago aswell. It got run over by a big truck with a trailer. He saw it just as he hit it and slammed on the breaks. Not sure that helped, it just smeared the cat over the street instead. He was nice enough to knock on the door and ask for a shovel and a plastic bag though... Its real ugly and its real hard to lose a pet you love (if you have any emotions and empathy that is). So, get a dog or an indoors cat and avoid the problem of cars. I have an indoors cat myself and its no big issue for it, it doesnt know about the outdoor world and its quite content chasing socks, shoes, balls, pieces of dog fur, looking at the TV and smashing my girlfriends sculptures. Aculaud 0 Posted April 24, 2002 I'm a cat person. I absolutely adore my cat and all his little idiosynchracies. If something happened to him, i'd be devistated. And it sounds like she really had a similar relationship built up with this cat, and things like that are extraordinarily hard to just re-create. I honestly wouldnt buy her a new cat, or any other pet. It would tend to come off as trying to supliment for something she'd never get back anyway. I'd say the best thing you could do at this point is just be there for her.
USSoldier11B 0 Posted April 24, 2002 We have five cats. Cats I think are by far the best pets. They are quieter and cleaner than dogs. We had to have one of our cats put to sleep today because he had severe internal damage from a urinary tract blockage. He was only two years old, it's so sad. Aculaud 0 Posted April 24, 2002 kinda makes you wonder whats worse; having it get run over, or knowing the exact date its going to happen. At least with the first one, you're blissfully unaware
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted April 24, 2002 The family used to have a cat that was an absolutely superb pet, rodent extermination and all, but it had a very bad habit of taking its catnaps in the middle of the road. This was, of course, eventually the death of her, but she got lucky on more than a few occasions.

I have had my cat for 15 years and it would disturb me if anything bad happened to him *knocks on wood* I will always say a sense of humour is good for bad situations, relax man.
