What's wrong with AI's driving in OA?

Recommended Posts

I met this terrible problem in the single mission Pathfinder, the mission failed because the time's out, that's because I spent more than half of mission time to wait for the AI driving the M2 to follow me!

Then I did an experiment in Editor. I drived an armored or a car, and let some or an AI driving some vehicles to follow me in the map DESERT, no rock, no house, not any barriers, I drove straight in full speed, you know what? The AIs were lost!

I found that they had really weird paths, what's wrong with them? They could follow me straight but they turned, Why?

Maybe they were in combat mode? If you're the leader try to command them to use the 'safe behaviour'. (command menu ~ - 8 - 3 if i remember correctly)

AI driving have always been broken in ArmA II. I think BIS top priority now should be improving the AI.

Yes, I've turned the combat mod to Safe, it's 7-4.

The AI were just react slowly, couldn't figure out a path quickly even I was just in front of them. You can easily lose them.

Haven't you met this problem in OA? If you did an experiment you would know it.

That problem was in OFP, ArmA 1, and ArmA II. It's definitely not gonna magically dissapear as soon as Arrowhead was released.

Also, this isn't just an OA forum ya know. Alot of people still haven't bought it yet, or their copies haven't arrived. There are also alot of people who will probably not buy it. Just don't assume everybody in the forums has OA.

IMO there havent been done much to solve this problem at all.

That mission name tells it all. :D Very annoying...

Not really. In OFP and AA1 AI managed to keep formation and move in convoys straight along the road quite successfully. Since AA2 convoys aren't possible anymore - because AI tends to drive off the road (let alone ignore bridges and drive into the water), turn around for no apparent reason etc. It's very annoying and makes convoy missions impossible to create.

Yes, maybe I've played too much multiplay in ArmA1 and ArmA2 and just forgot it, and these days I'm playing single missions of OA made me notice it.

I'm begging BIS to make some progresses on it.

The A.I. system in OFP and AA1 is essentially the same. The problems appeared in ArmA2 because the A.I. system was improved (although with serious secondary effects such as driving).

Yep, that's far from being an improvement in the pathfinding area. But a piece of advise to mission makers : the WP speed must always be set to full to avoid waiting for delayed units.

IMO you aren't a programmer so you don't realize the work behind fixing something of that magnitude.

They can't just magically type one line of code that fixes driving.

Oh don't go that way. It's been a year - more than enough time to do at least something. I really hoped to see it fixed as a part of OA. Tough luck.

Maybe a problem with missing/unconnected paths or roadlinks and overall AI "skills" to drive in convoys?

There were some places on A1/A2 default islands where the AI was driving/walking beside them - even on safe and careless. Just curious why default AI isnt able to slowly speed-up and slowdown?

There are big gaps between leader and the rest of the team and some silly crashs into each other...

BIS is more than aware of the problem, this I'm sure of. It seems however, and this is understandable, that fixing/improving the AI driving is quite a difficult task for them. But if you guys think they haven't done anything then you're wrong. I know BIS has at least attempted to improve it with several patches. I'm sure they could improve it and make it really nice and smooth, but all of their programmers would probably be tied up for months on it and we wouldn't see any other improvements with the patches.

Sure, but its a MILITARY SIMULATOR with broken SIMULATOR DRIVING. I think it should be fixed, and I know its difficult. The AI in good old Flashpoint was better IMO. They did it once, they can do it again.

It's not that simple. BIS can't just roll back to OFP AI... :j:
