DIH 1970s Generic African Units

Recommended Posts

I'm working on African Civilians right now.

Thats GREAT news... the civ modules do a lot to make scenarios more believable, and I'm hopeful the coming Africanesque islands will feature basic ALICE functionality - Cherno civs would look VERY out of place!

This, I hope too.

But I have to warn you not to expect too much (yet). The first release will just be Africans in such clothes stock ArmA2 has to offer that are not totally out of place.

I'm an impatient person :) But once I have everything in place (That is: 2 sides with enough equipment for warfare type missions + some kind of 'Resistance'/neutrals + civilians + unique warfare mode), I will start to improve the pack, as far as permissions allow.

EDIT:

Anybody knows if someone does some Portuguese units? Search returned no result. While it would be too big a project for me alone, I guess some 'old colony power' units would be nice.

Can anybody think of units already released that might pass for imported mercenaries of the period?

Time for another update!

It seems there are no Portuguese soldiers out there - so I had to try and add my own (click to enlarge):

dihafricapor1.th.jpg

The pic shows a first try to get the Portuguese 'Vertical Lizard' camo into the game.

From left to right:

1) NCO with Heckler and Koch G3 (Espingarda m/961) and P-38 (I don't know the Portuguese designation of this pistol, but I know that they have used it).

2) Soldier with G3 Espingarda m/961 (This is a Portuguese variant of the first G-3 production model. I used the Swedish AK-4 model because it comes very close to the actual m/961).

3) Machine Gunner with Portuguese MG-42/59 (a modernized version of WW2's MG-42 that uses NATO 7.62 ammo)

4) Soldier with FN FAL (m/962). The FN FAL was only used in very small quantities.

5) AT sodlier with G3 E. m/961 and Carl Gustav Launcher

And a pic of the earlier mentioned African Civilians (click to enlarge):

Terrific mod btw goes great with island Duala.

Are you ever considering including cuban soldiers in the MPLA faction?

I saw a show about Che Guevara training soldiers in Angola, and then the attempt to defend it from invading pro-democracy soldiers. any chance of including Cubans?

edit: here are some cuban soldiers of that time

im trying to look for some more but no luck...

@failtolawl:

These would be nice additions indeed... But I only do reskins and I'm running out of suitable models - but if someone would lend me a hand...?

@nikita320106

Yes, they are ready.

Together with many enhancements for both MPLA and UNITA and a three sided warfare mission on Isla Duala.

However, some 'issues' prevent me from releasing the stuff right now.

EDIT:

Here's another teaser pic, showing Portuguese soldiers on Isla Duala in the new warfare mission (click to enlarge):

The MAN is a quite nice stand in for the French trucks (Berliet) the Portuguese used in Angola. Here's a pic of an original Berliet:

I was wondering why you cant just reskin another model. im kinda new at skinning,

i attempted to reskin and pack a mi8 in air.pbo but for some reason it doesnt want to load. so all those models are useless in the game. I even included a backup folder

There are just no suitable models in ArmA2. For example, I can't use any models with body armour, because they just wouldn't fit.

I also can't reskin any P'85 units without proper permission.

On your Mi8 problem: that's easy. I'll send you a PM.

Well, that would be a bit off...

But maybe one could expand the theme to Guinea-Bissau, where the PAIGC fought for independence against the Portuguese.

Or to Zaire/Congo, as this conflict spread to Angola several times...

There are indeed many possibilities!

Great update, thanks Dimitri_Harkov

hi dimitri, Its indeed a great mod that have many potentials for fights in different conflicts in Africa like already been mentioned,

and thx 2 for Vilas for his great P85-pack.

but I did want to ask if you had any contact with the guys off the SA bushwar mod? cause they where working for some great stuff and a nice island for A1 & A2 but its been quiet for a while around it.

Thank you :)

on Bushwars conflict mod (BWC): It's not too easy to get in touch with ObmaR, it seems... Last time I had contact was ~ a month ago. He hasn't replied since.

I hope he is still active or at least plans to become active again, because his stuff is excellent. The Alouettes for example are some of the best helicopters out there. The units, weapons and mortars are great too. I have not yet seen any pics of any map project - maybe I missed them. An other African map would be great!

BWC is the prime reason why I'd rather expand the mod to the northwest, because Namibia, Rhodesia etc. would be covered by a possible BWC release for ArmA2.

But I guess you would not be too disappointed to see Belgian Paratroopers in Congo :)

Cheers,

D.

little mind trouble before starting dl:why the vilas units pack doesnt require weapons pack?it seems it requires just the config....also does it needs a separate folder for the config or can I put it in the same folder of the rest of the pack?

You can put all files in one folder.

The units indeed only need the config. But without weapons, they would be quite useless... That's why you need all 4 files.

Cheers,

D.
