Is it worth it?

Recommended Posts

I am a new player to the ARMA franchise, although many years ago I enjoyed the hell out of the first flashpoint game. Before I buy a copy of the newer ARMA II, I would like to know if the community is still relatively active. Are the forums dead or dying? Is there a substantial amount of people still playing online in multiplayer?

Also, I have recently transitioned to macintosh computers. Is anyone familiar with how well the game would operate on the BootCamp software (allows you to run windows programs on a mac) and what, if any, issues might arise?

Finally, I need to know what graphics I would be expecting. I am familiar with the stunning performance on the videos I have seen, but as the game would run on my iMac or MacBook which has an integrated 9400 GT invidia card, I want to know if i would be severely limited in the graphics I would see. My pc with a 9800 SSC GTX+ barely runs the game on low, although i have heard that ARMA is more CPU intensive than graphics card intensive, and my pc is from 2004.

Any help or other advice would be greatly appreciated, and If it is worth the money, I look forward to seeing everyone in the game.

Cheers.:yay:

hello and welcome to this community.

to answer your questions:

Before I buy a copy of the newer ARMA II, I would like to know if the community is still relatively active.

Are the forums dead or dying? Is there a substantial amount of people still playing online in multiplayer?

Yes, it is pretty active. Plenty of mods, addons, missions etc are being released daily. See the forum for yourself. Also, BI involvement within this community is top notch (the amount of beta patches released for instance, as well as proper reply from game developers themselves).

For MP part, mostly coops, some public PvPs, and 5+ tournaments and Leagues that i am aware of. There is a lot of gaming going on, but oposed to A1, OFP, most players are playing under locked doors (private servers, hidden, or pass protected) in order to get a proper gaming session without needing to baby sit someone or make sure no one wrecks their game.

Also, I have recently transitioned to macintosh computers. Is anyone familiar with how well the game would operate on the BootCamp software (allows you to run windows programs on a mac) and what, if any, issues might arise?

There shouldn't be any problems running A2 under bootcamp, haven't tried it myself, but as a apple computer semi-user, i can say there are no real problems running win apps (including games) from WIN bootcamp partition. There are a few in this very community using mac pros (2xquads etc, playing A2 without issues).

iMac or MacBook which has an integrated 9400 GT invidia card, I want to know if i would be severely limited in the graphics I would see.

Unfortunatly for you, neither iMacs or mac book pros (i use one as well) are good for gaming. Especially due to their video cards limitations (9400gt is a very low-end gfx card).

I am not expecting you to be able to play without hickups on such a system, even though A2 is more CPU intensive than GPU. As said, it is possible, if you would have had a mac pro with some proper GFX cards. But given what you own, i wouldn't go buying without giving the demo a try before that.

That said, the 9800SSC GTX+ is way better than the 9400, and if you would have a dual/quad ~3GHz + min 4GB of ram + a fast HDD, that would be a lot better. But as you said your rig is from 2004, i doubt it.

All in all, the community around A2 is great (and i have been around since OFP days), but from your gaming experience, i am pretty confident that the macs are not gonna make you enjoy this game to the fullest (if at all)

Thanks for the reply, It helped alot. I guess my only option is to save up a few months to upgrade my cpu. Shame, i was looking forward to making movies with this beautiful game.

You could try the demo to get an idea of how it will play.

Remember that there are also many mods that improve performance.

the addiction would be more enjoyable if you're getting more than a measly 20 fps..which drops to about 5 in the cities.
