Straight-Forward Video Memory Thread

Recommended Posts

Ok, one thread dedicated only for video memory...

Can someone shed light on what all that setting for video memory mean?

For your card (HD4870 1GB same as mine) you should first try 'Default'.

Thanks for responding Defunkt. What does "Default" mean then?

I have been playing with it at Highest and I get random stuttering when near the warehouse and also everytime I respawn in armoury games.

There's a thread around somewhere that explained that every option other than Default is actually a legacy setting and refers to a specific amount less than 1GB. Default auto-detects and in the majority of cases this will be correct, to make sure check the localVRAM entry in your ArmA.cfg, IIRC this is what it has detected, mine is 1073741824 (1GB'ish).

Tried setting to "Default" and immediately get spikes when moving. I then switched immediately to "Very High" again and the spike disappeared. any hint what is going on?

My localvram is exactly as yours.

Sorry, dunno, I got the opposite, having used Very High for a while I then saw an immediate improvement after switching to Default.

yeah you get spikes on default?

But thats why we have options to find the one that works, Default should be the amount you have but VH seems to work instead. I use Default, its better with CFX and my 2GB of VRAM (no strobing or dark flicker), but VH seems better on spiking/artifacts..( which seem to have started up with 9.10,9.11 Cats for me. Small ones easy to flush, do it twice it seems to go away for alongtime,Hours)Its how the game and the DX and the Driver use the framebuffers of your vidcard.

It occurred to me that possibly what happened here is that switching to Default (and using all available video memory) may have exposed a HDD bottleneck. Your transfer speed from disk may not be sufficient to service all that video memory.

I think you may be right there as I have a pretty crappy jmicron HDD SATA2...hahahahah . Which means that with a crappy HDD, i cannot push my GPU to the max? :(((

it has been said numerous times in other threads, i dont know if i can reproduce it exactly but should be something like this: high=256mb vm, very high=512mb vm, default - the game tries to determine the amount you actually have and use it. For my gtx260 with 896Vram it works as i get the best results by using default...

This was a post about video memory... not an official guideline - more a "best guess so far"...

The thread as a whole was about a graphical issue, but ended being a discussion about video memory so its worth looking through...
