I don't particuallary like flying the planes and helicopters, coming from a flight sim background, they just don't work for me. Same with the tank battles. The target calling buffer bug killed it for me. But I do think it's a huge step forward to inclued these things and to do them as well as they did.<span id='postcolor'> Disagree. And i'm not the onyl one. Â There are different types of people out there. The fact is that this man who was writing this review doesn't like FPS games. This reviewer likes 1st shooters and OFP is not that. Check that review about Ghost Recon on Gamespot. GR review has been written by the same person as OFP rewiev. dayglow 2 Posted March 28, 2002 If I remember correctly when PC Gamer reviewed OFP they gave it something like 78%-80% and they really liked most of it. Remember they reviewed the orginal game without any patches, so the bugs take down the score. Now the Game of the Year is where the editors, not the reviewers come together and decide which game they liked best. Pretty subjective and they make no bones about that fact. They decide in their opinion what makes the game of the year. Myself I would have seen it differently, but that's my opinion. Game of the Year isn't a point by point breakdown. It's pure subjectivity. And in terms of subjectivity I don't like flying the helicopters or planes. Controls are mushy, there are no sensors to fly and fight properly. View distance sucks, etc. Tanks, again no optics or thermals to look across the battle field. You charge in and aquire targets, then have to wait for your gunner to quit calling the 20 infantry guys on the ground for you yell fire that you clicked like 20 times trying to shoot the tank targetting you. Then as you yell fire 20 times, your commands on changing direction, targetting all get buffered and screws me right up But I do love having the tanks and air-support around. I love arriving at the battle field in a IFV then have it's fire support when I get there. Even the mission where you escort the truck convoy in the campaign wasn't that bad, smaller groups and no major battle to overwelm control. And it's a step in the right direction. I would give OFP game of the year for this reason, the open endedness, the ability to do what you want. Now the holy grail is a fully dynamic campaign ( plug of my last threat I've started here) and realistic simulation of armour and CAS combat Now that would be a game of a lifetime, forget year COLINMAN
Guest Posted March 28, 2002 I really like the heart-stopping moments that sometimes occure in OFP. The other week I was playing an MP-game, "Capture the Car" CTF style. The objectives were for each team to steal a number of vehicles from the other team and bring them to base. Anyway, I had aquired this nice little BMP which I parked in the forrest overlooking our vehicles. I was very successful in blowing away every vehicle that was stolen, and nobody seemed to find my hiding place. On occasion I took a look around to make sure that I hadn't been detected. As I looked around, after 5-10 minutes of successful havoc, in a split second my eye caught a LAW missile in mid-air, heading towards me. I totally froze and the next moment I was dead. I really almost got a heart attack.

If u don't like choppers and tanks, don't use them. Is as simple as that. I like flying and i love rolling around in a tank. Flying in OFP is pretty good now in v1,46. there's no realistic targeting and no realistic view distance (it can be foggy though), but it's fun anyway. U can set your own view distance if u want. 5000m is limited. default view distance is 900m. I can fly normally if i set view distance to 2000m. I have fun in my mission editor. SpaceAlex 0 Posted March 29, 2002 Anyway. Lets stop with Ghost Recon and PC Gamer. We have one nice thread here.
advocatexxx 0 Posted March 29, 2002 In Ghost Recon you can't shoot through bushes (?). In Ghost Recon, the AI can only see you at short distances, and they hardly go prone, instead they walk around slowly like morons. I'd take Flashpoint's AI over GRecon's anytime. Spacealex, sure this isn't a Flightsim, but the basic physics remain. Even though the choppers have a stupid feature where they maintain their altitude over terrain (in real life this doesn't happen), their controls and physics are tolerable. Thank god choppers don't handle like those in Commanche 4 or another cheezy arcade air war. I have one comment though, as far as M1A1s are concerned. The US Army didn't comission M1A1s until late August of 1985, yet this game takes place around May if I remember correctly. So technically, the new M1A1s were still not in service. dayglow 2 Posted March 31, 2002 I remember another time I was playing a single mission, not sure which one it was, but I was assualting a fortified posiition on a hill. Well anyways I press on and was able to advance my troops all the way into the position and was mopping up. I was moving around the perimiter and haven't had any contact for a few minutes so I was relaxed when a guy with a PK openned up around 50 meters to the side, well I jumped in real life and in the game. Hitting the dirt I crawled behind a barrier. I was then able to peek around and shot the guy, but man was my heart racing. My speakers were turned up high and it was so calm and peaceful, only to hear the shots. I just bought a new graphics card (gf4 yeah baby) and now I can't believe how beautiful night time is. BI got the whole grey world part looking perfect. The world graphics in this game amaze me. The charactors need a little work, but man when it's sunset with the shadows streaching across the land and the pink sky, it brings a tear to my eye....sniff, I love this game man. madmike 0 Posted March 31, 2002 THe wow factor has definately increased since I downloaded satchels sound pack. Its shit scary being fired at in the woods. You can hear the bullets going through the trees
Hidden 0 Posted March 31, 2002 One of my first wow moments must be playing the demo, when the enemy suddenly ambushed me, I had no idea they could do that! And I thought that area was clear! Another one: Sneaking towards a forest, then 3-4 enemies comes running at full speed towards me through the forest. It was scripted, but made me jump like nothing else. Not to mention when I was crawling on my belly towards an enemy officer. Ops, I did it again. He turned around, aimed at me and I had forgot to reload.. Then my medic came in from the right and killed the officer and saved my life. Nice! I have had hundreds of those moments, the sunrise and sunset made me (almost.. *cough*) cry in the beginning. Remember a night mission, I was scared to death after being chased by a tank which I managed to blow up a split second before they got me, then some soldiers, I had been hiding in bushes and was literally shaking after an hour of excitement. I was black op and the night was turning to day, the darkness turned into shadows as the sun slowly rised on the horizon. Unforgettable... I hope BIS make something even better, but at least as good as this, if they decide to come up with an OFP 2 (I guess Resistance is some kind of OFP 2, though). EBass 0 Posted April 1, 2002 The best wow moments are in mp when u can acctually call for backup. With devious plans. I play a few school freinds occasionaly and we have a laugh. Once I had the flag and my mate was driving me back to my base. Suddenly two M60s opened up on us and all I saw was the windscreen smash and some blood. The screen went red but I wasent dead. The UAZ ground to a halt, I bailed and dived behind the rear bumper. I saw my two mates lying bloodied in the UAZ their heads lolling down. I couldent do anything the M60s were turning my car into swiss cheese. I saw Chris move to the right to try to get a clear shot at me but I put a bullet into him. About 30 seconds later a hind gunship came above me and totally smashed up the hill where the gunners were hiding. I called for a mate, he picked me up in a BMP as I could no longer walk and dropped the flag off at our base.
EBass 0 Posted April 1, 2002 btw can anyone in this game except me drive? Whenever I join a public server no matter whos driving we end up impaled in a tree, get out hurt and have to crawl the rest of the way. Speaking of a wow moment. In that mission where u save the hostages when the second truck followed me I launched a LAW at it from close range as I hid. It blew sky high and it was kinda sick to see all the dead russians in the back. Then I saw him a Commie with blood all over him who had survived the explosion. I had an empty LAW equiped, I was dead meat. I could almost see the lust for revenge in his eyes as he leveled his gun at me and a blood splatter apeared from his chest and he fell over dead. I could almost picture the resistance sniper on the hill seeing if I was ok and giving a cheerful thumbs up
Assault (CAN) 1 Posted April 1, 2002 My last 'wow' moment was when I was playing the 'convoy' mission in the single mission menu. I was headed back to base in a Vulcan, a badly damaged M2 Bradley with my troops in the back was trailing me. I came to the top of a hill and noticed a T-80 about 400m distant, thinking I was screwed, I retreated back down but before I could reach the bottom of the bill, the T-80 was blown to pieces. Just then I looked to my left to see an advancing M1A1, that tank saved my ass. Felt pretty cool considering the average intelligence of your AI trooper.
